Earlier today, I watched the launch webinar following publication of the 'Knowledge is Power' report into access to trusted health information across the UK. While 7 in 10 UK adults in this research study reported that they could easily find health information online, less than half trusted that information and 1 in 10 said they had been personally been affected by health misinformation. In a world where essentially *anyone* can write *anything* and put it out there for the world to see, there is a pressing need for health information that people know they can trust. The Patient Information Forum (PIF)'s PIF-Tick accreditation is making huge strides in this area, but there's a part to play for everyone: thinking about the websites we visit for our own self-care, what we share with friends and followers online, and what potentially scaremongering headlines we repeat without having really read the articles. I became a member of PIF a few months ago and am learning a lot. We have teamed up with Ipsos UK to publish new research into health information access across the UK. Knowledge is Power offers new insights on information access, trusted sources, communication with healthcare professionals and the impact of misinformation. The report reveals the demand for the NHS to signpost trusted information and wide support for the verification of health information. Knowledge is Power makes five recommendations on the right to health information. All recommendations are aligned with the three shifts proposed in the NHS 10-year plan. I’m part of the pharma comms team at Virgo Health, currently working across two accounts with a corporate comms focus. ➡ What types of projects do you work on? Typical projects include media relations and press office, social media strategy and channel management, executive visibility, corporate events, content development and anything else that comes our way! ➡ What does a typical day at work look like? As much as I'd love to avoid a cliché, there isn't a typical day at work. That said, some of my daily responsibilities include reviewing materials – social media calendars, thought leadership articles, and metrics reports; preparing communications plans and media strategies, such as for an upcoming corporate announcement; as well as ongoing client liaison and generally ensuring my teams have everything they need to deliver for our clients. Other key responsibilities include preparing client budgets, supporting on new/organic business proposals, managing account finances, inputting into resourcing and always keeping our finance team in the loop. ➡ What has been the highlight of your career in Healthcare Communications? One standout would be my first-ever promotion. Early in my career, I always had a fear that I wasn’t ‘cut out’ for the job and lacked a lot of confidence. Being promoted gave me a much-needed boost and helped me realise that healthcare comms was the industry for me. ➡ What advice would you give someone looking to start their career in Healthcare Communications? Firstly, be a sponge for information and ask lots of questions. There’s a lot to take in and no one will expect you to be an expert. I would also say that healthcare comms is a team sport – you aren’t alone and you should always lean on those around you. Who is affected by EGFR+ lung cancer? Following the release of our comprehensive survey, we're sharing key insights into the demographics of EGFR+ lung cancer patients in the UK. Understanding who is affected helps us to better advocate for and support our community. Key Demographic Insights: • Gender: Over three-quarters of EGFR+ patients are women. • Age: Half of EGFR+ patients are under 60 at the time of diagnosis. • Smoking Status: 68% of EGFR+ patients have never smoked, highlighting the need for awareness that lung cancer can affect non-smokers. • Stage at Diagnosis: Almost three-quarters of patients are diagnosed at Stage IV, underscoring the importance of early detection and diagnosis. These insights are crucial for tailoring our advocacy, empowerment, and support efforts to meet the specific needs of our EGFR+ community. Great panel discussion on overcoming barriers to patient centricity featuring Philippa Pristerà. The panel shared their thoughts on: - How meaningful change needs to be supported from right at the top, and requires structural work to support it - The need for regulatory and legal colleagues to be involved with patient engagement activity right from the start to ensure they don't become blockers - Why without measurement and data to support the value and impact of patient engagement it can be challenging to get senior support - Taking a moment to see how far things have come in the last 20 years to bring patients into our work in a meaningful way Also my favourite part - an idea that next year we should all bring a regulatory or legal colleague with us so they too can learn the value of involving patients in our work! ❤️

You are not alone!   Last week I hosted an agency-only meeting of the PM Society’s Industry-Agency Relationships Interest Group with co-lead Stephen Page. 12 agencies were represented, some larger networks, most smaller and independent. The question – what’s life like running healthcare comms agencies at the moment? The answer – some significant and worrying trends, but also a few green shoots that could be pointers for the future.    People on the ground, industry procurement, marketing and agency teams are not only feeling the strain, but showing it in their behaviours; Ghosting because they’re afraid of breaking relationships, having to renege on purchase orders, and pitches that evaporate despite the financial commitment made on both sides.    Worse is the direct impact on the quality of the dialogue with healthcare professionals and therefore derailing our purpose and mission: producing positive outcomes for both patients and investors.   The industry has always relied on its very capable marketing and medical affairs teams and their relationships with skilled agency communicators for disease awareness, medical education and awareness of new therapies. It is significant that Veeva has cited that 77% of all the content currently being produced for HCPs is not being read. Something is not right.   The irony is that over the last year, we’ve seen huge progress in vaccine development, cancer treatments, obesity management, and rare diseases, as well as new treatments for conditions like Alzheimer’s.    It is the value problem that persists. Consequently, every cost on the P&L is being examined and it is all too easy to focus on marketing and medical affairs, forgetting that this is the interface with the HCPs – the bit that needs to thrive – if there are to be better outcomes for investors and most importantly, patients.   In our meeting, just one member of the group talked about some progressive conversations with several pharma procurement colleagues; Overall however, the messages were disheartening. And for us, the worst aspect was the degree of desperation that has crept into conversations between industry procurement, marketing, medical affairs and their agency partners, all hardworking and expert people focused on the same mission: better outcomes for patients.    So, those green shoots? The synergy that has existed between so many capable industry and agency people has taken a few knocks and many of the individuals involved are feeling close to breaking. So, you are not alone. But while all good things come to an end, it is always followed by the next adventure and challenge.   The mission remains the same: producing positive outcomes for both patients and investors. So, we’d ask anyone experiencing the drama of the accelerating change facing the sector, to get involved and help us at the PM Society define how we all remain relevant and get back to adding the value that is so very dearly needed by patient populations around the world.
