At Principles Agency we recently landed on 4 things brands need to do to succeed. We call these the Principles of Unforgettable Brands. Rather than plucking a framework from thin air because the letters created a neat acronym (ours don’t, DEVC is really rubbish) we put the hard work in to create something useful and effective. Including... ▪️ Speaking to countless senior marketers at successful brands ▪️ Studying the leading, or fastest growing, brands in different categories ▪️ Stealing knowledge from all the conversations Douglas Burdett, Jon Evans and Fergus O'Carroll have had in recent years ▪️ Absorbing the learnings from the best books and brains in our industry (namely Orlando Wood, Ehrenberg-Bass Institute, sarah carter & Les Binet, Mark Ritson et al) From all this work we landed on a very simple, but effective list - to make brands come to mind quicker, and stay there longer, we help them to be more distinctive, entertaining, visible and consistent. In celebration of this little feat, I’m going to share an unforgettable brand or campaign every week that I think best demonstrates these principles in action. Kicking off for week 1 is this belter from Peugeot back in 2003. It’s possibly my favourite ad, and reminds me of a time before car ads were just city montages and ethereal sunsets. It’s a perfect example of pure entertainment (Principle #2) and whilst there’s too much to say in here about the excellent storytelling craft in this ad, the main thing to note is that it has enough confidence in holding the viewer’s attention to build up to a satisfying reveal - something we’re seeing less and less of since the rise of skippable content. #Marketing #BuildingUnforgettableBrands

Rory Sutherland has had his say on the Jaguar and said the rebrand was NEEDED to compete in the electric car space. Over the course of the years, as a Creative Technologist I have generated a lot of ideas for pitches and thought I would share some of them on LinkedIn. Ford Pro provides a software solution to help the smooth running of a fleet of vans through their cloud-based platform, however it doesn't provide any software for a fleet's most valuable asset, it's drivers and their day-to-day routines. Have you see the Asda rebrand by Havas London? I took some of my own advice I give to partners & clients.. sleep on it. First impressions are important but let it percolate... so... Its impressive work from Havas for a Supermarket. Its a bold confident change for Asda. When I first saw it, I felt this rebrand had all the hallmarks of a fintech challenger and was jumping on the youthful, sticker laden social orientated bandwagon. However, on closer inspection and thinking about how this brand is positioning with its customer, its disruptive and and a clever move. When the brand identity is paired with photography that is synonymous with groceries, thats when it really works IMO, specifically the upper/lowercase of the headline font. (I would like to see the guidelines for how a lowercase letter is chosen in words/sentences, thats for sure!) The typography is playful and the subtle concept driven from hand-painted green grocer signage is a nice touch; They say its more humans, and I agree. I would like to see more POS applications as that is where the detail will live everyday.. and the true test of time will play out. Overall, I feel that this will resonate with Asda's customers and bring new, younger shoppers across who are responsive to all things new. What do you make of the new Jaguar ad and rebrand? It all seems rather clickbaity, designed to generate outrage. (Elon hates it, but then again, he's also creating free publicity for a competitor). I highly recommend 'Eno' a new documentary by director Gary Hustwit. Brian Eno was initially reluctant to participate until Hustwit proposed that the final film would only be screened generatively. Working with creative technologist Brendan Dawes they developed bespoke generative software designed to sequence scenes and create transitions using Hustwit’s interviews with Eno and hundreds of hours of unseen archival footage and unreleased music. Each screening of Eno is unique, as the generative software continuously re-edits and reassembles the film’s scenes and music, turning every viewing into a one-of-a-kind experience. This use of generative technology is integral to Eno’s creative process. In my screening, Eno creates a simple melody, filters it through some software, and the notes in the melody are reduced at random by 30%. The timing changes, the emphasis shifts and a new idea evolves. It's worth seeing live if it comes to your area. Our strategy director Russell Holmes and creative lead Alice Saunders were recently invited to talk to a group of marketeers about how brands can build trust. Over the next few weeks we’ll be sharing a series of bitesize videos discussing the themes and tactics that were highlighted in their talk. The first of our six videos gives context as to why communicating trust is especially important in today’s world, and introduces the first theme — visually demonstrating validation. Tomorrow is World Suicide Prevention Day. And today marks the start of the next chapter in our campaign to unite the nation against suicide. Together, adam&eveDDB, the Campaign Against Living Miserably and ITV are launching Missed Birthdays. A campaign to draw attention to the fact that suicidality amongst children and young people is at a record high. 10 years ago, the single biggest killer of young people was accidents. Today it’s suicide. It has claimed the lives of 6,929 young people. Every single one of those lives is represented by a missed birthday balloon: a simple, powerful symbol of the hope, happiness and humanity that has been so tragically lost. It should make you angry. It should make you feel outraged. But it shouldn’t make you feel hopeless. Because we can all play our part in ending youth suicide, for good. Today, we aren’t asking you to donate. We’re not asking you to sign a petition. We are simply asking you to CARE. C: Check In with the young people in your life. A: Ask if they’re feeling suicidal. The word 'innovation' is a loaded word. When you hear ‘innovation’, you probably think of brands like Tesla, Gucci, or challenger brands like Surreal and I think that makes a lot brands think they don’t have licence to be ‘innovative’ But I think that every brand is capable of innovation, and to give it a definition: 👉 Do something new to set yourself apart 👉 Change the rule books All with the aim to: 👉 Add value to your customers so that they choose you, and ultimately, your brand grows in return. Whatever your industry or brand size or aesthetic, we can hopefully all agree that we want to to grow our brands. And so to apply 'innovative thinking', I see it as going back to the fundamentals: What is your challenge or the problem you need to solve for your brand? What does success look like? And then for the fun part, is there an innovative way to make that happen?
