At Principles Agency we recently landed on 4 things brands need to do to succeed. We call these the Principles of Unforgettable Brands. Rather than plucking a framework from thin air because the letters created a neat acronym (ours don’t, DEVC is really rubbish) we put the hard work in to create something useful and effective. Including... ▪️ Speaking to countless senior marketers at successful brands ▪️ Studying the leading, or fastest growing, brands in different categories ▪️ Stealing knowledge from all the conversations Douglas Burdett, Jon Evans and Fergus O'Carroll have had in recent years ▪️ Absorbing the learnings from the best books and brains in our industry (namely Orlando Wood, Ehrenberg-Bass Institute, sarah carter & Les Binet, Mark Ritson et al) From all this work we landed on a very simple, but effective list - to make brands come to mind quicker, and stay there longer, we help them to be more distinctive, entertaining, visible and consistent. In celebration of this little feat, I’m going to share an unforgettable brand or campaign every week that I think best demonstrates these principles in action. Kicking off for week 1 is this belter from Peugeot back in 2003. It’s possibly my favourite ad, and reminds me of a time before car ads were just city montages and ethereal sunsets. It’s a perfect example of pure entertainment (Principle #2) and whilst there’s too much to say in here about the excellent storytelling craft in this ad, the main thing to note is that it has enough confidence in holding the viewer’s attention to build up to a satisfying reveal - something we’re seeing less and less of since the rise of skippable content. #Marketing #BuildingUnforgettableBrands

Rory Sutherland has had his say on the Jaguar and said the rebrand was NEEDED to compete in the electric car space. 2.3m people working in the Creative Sector await bold policies after the election, for an industry that contributes 6% to goods and services. Sir Peter Bazalgette explains why more investment is needed. The UK economy resembles Rip van Winkle, awakening slowly. Despite many policy promises in this election, realising them hinges on achieving better growth. The creative industries are crucial to this. Recognised as a priority by the previous government, the sector has responded, recovering significantly from Covid. The creative sector contributes 6% to the UK's goods and services and employs 2.3 million people. Positioned at the core of the digital economy, it has immense potential with support policies; gaming software, immersive screen productions, AI in advertising, fashion's 3D printing, and university spinouts in "createch." But the UK hasn't fully embraced its potential. Public investment in the creative industries is a mere 1%, lower than other growth sectors, despite yielding substantial returns. In 2018, UK Research and Innovation invested £56 million in nine creative clusters across screen, games, fashion, and AI. Over five years, this investment attracted an impressive £252 million from industry sources.  A second "creative industries clusters programme" with backing from the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, was approved, pending a review. The Science and Technology Council has also explored investment opportunities by visiting key organisations last year. Their conclusion: public investment should mirror the sector's size and growth potential. The inquiry also called for better R&D definition for tax credits. The UK lags behind Germany, France, and South Korea. The British Business Bank, tasked with attracting private investment into SMEs, isn't meeting the creative sector's needs. Its criteria don't align with creative businesses' models. To tackle this, Creative UK, suggests a Bank of Creativity, modelled after Better Society Capital, which has successfully leveraged £3 billion into social enterprises with an initial £925 million. This idea merits consideration by the next government. When the creative sector thrives, it benefits the broader economy: advertising and music enhance national brands, fashion boosts retail, design is vital to manufacturing, and game software aids in developing autonomous cars. The sector's annual exports exceed £50 billion. The sector's influence extends beyond economics to culture and society. It reflects national values and enriches public discourse, exemplified by artists like Adele and Ed Sheeran, socially positive games like Runescape and LittleBigPlanet, architectural achievements like the John Morden retirement centre, and impactful media like ITV's Mr Bates vs The Post Office, which sparked national outrage. This sector is the nation's heartbeat. If the UK fully recognises the creative sector's potential, the rewards will be remarkable.

Jaguar UK launched its latest logo and branding for it’s line of…….. of what? (That’s the question). After watching this video a few times I am still puzzled as to what they are trying to do with the brand. “Copy nothing” means absolutely nothing (no pun intended) when most people don’t even know what Jaguar stands for anymore. It used to stand for an English luxury car in the 80s and 90s and then it went nowhere. Now, with this branding exercise they had blurred their branding even further moving it from the cars/vehicles category into…. Fashion? Clothing? A runaway company in SoHo? Quite curious to find out how other marketers feel about this latest rebranding effort from the former English high-end car manufacturer.

In today's King's Speech, the new Labour Government outlined its plans for the UK digital landscape by introducing the Digital Information & Smart Data Bill. This legislation marks a significant step for data reform, aiming to modernise data usage and drive ethical, responsible business expansion across the nation. The King emphasised the transformative potential of AI, stating of the new bill: "It will seek to establish the appropriate legislation to place requirements on those working to develop the most powerful artificial intelligence models." This underscores the government's commitment to regulating AI development within a robust legal framework. So how will this play out for technology providers working to develop AI solutions in this space? The Digital Information & Smart Data Bill is designed to offer numerous opportunities for businesses. By standardising data practices, it aims to foster innovation and competitiveness within the UK market. In theory, businesses will be empowered to fully utilise smart data, enabling them to attract and retain customers more effectively. With clear guidelines and compliance measures, companies can confidently engage in data-driven strategies, knowing they are acting responsibly. A core aspect of the bill is its emphasis on ethical data usage. As with the introduction of the GDPR, by mandating transparency and accountability, the legislation ensures consumer trust is maintained; crucial in an era of heightened data privacy concerns. Companies adhering to these standards can differentiate themselves as trustworthy and forward-thinking, gaining a competitive edge. But what about the companies that can’t afford to make these changes? We will be interested to see whether or not the Digital Information & Smart Data Bill represents a forward-looking approach to data reform in the UK, or if it becomes a restriction to growth and development. By promoting ethical standards and providing a framework for responsible growth, will the legislation offer businesses a unique opportunity to thrive in a compliant and consumer-centric environment? Awesome client, big plans and bold moves for 2025... It was great to be in London last week to meet Fabio for the first time, and as always, lovely catch up with Allie. We met to dig into a project we launched last year. Excited to get into the relaunch activity for 2025. The session was packed with brainstorming, idea generation, and strategy discussions. We looked closely at how to communicate and sell the campaign internally, focusing on how to equip the sales team with everything they need to drive success. We wrapped things up with a bit of time out and a very nice meal as well. Great food, great company, and a solid plan in place for what’s coming next! 🚨 WARNING - Smug alert 🚨 Last week I got a lovely email from the team over at Agency Hackers to tell me that I have been named one of the top ten agency AI Innovators for 2024...THIS IS MAD! The Great Agencies AI Innovators awards celebrate agency leaders (and their teams) who are making meaningful strides with AI in their agency. At Chime Agency we use AI regularly to help with all sorts of activities, from automating some of our in house processes and workflows, to helping with structure and formation of content and sparking creativity with ideation. We aren't scared of AI, in fact, we're working hard on our Diced.ai platform (which is so close to being able to launch it to the world - watch this space) which we hope will make agency campaign management a whole lot quicker and slicker! I also LOVE playing with AI tools - it's become a bit of a hobby (yes I am that sad...and with two kids and everything)!
