techUK is proud to work with the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) in calling on the new Government to take four key policy actions that can help improve road safety, drive economic growth, and support environmental sustainability. These actions are: Action 1: Put the complete regulatory regime in place through secondary legislation that enables the commercial deployment of AVs by 2026. Action 2: Give legal certainty and guidance for advanced trials of AVs that further lead up to full deployment. Action 3: Establish the UK at the forefront of global harmonization in AV regulation, cutting costs and promoting cross-border trade. Action 4: Drive the growth of a native UK AV manufacturing industry by funding the development of indigenous drive-by-wire electric vehicle platforms. Therefore, These measures will ensure the UK's competitiveness within the AV global market, save 3,900 lives and avoid 60,000 severe accidents by 2040 while potentially creating up to 342,000 new jobs. Government to set out ZEV mandate details “in due course” The UK Government has announced it will stick to the 2030 ICE phase out, but said further details on the zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate will be released "in due course". It follows intense lobbying from motor manufacturers who claimed job losses could result from the legislation. Yesterday, Transport Secretary Louise Haigh and Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds hosted a roundtable with automotive and charging industry leaders to discuss the electric vehicles and the ZEV mandate, including the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), Tesla, Nissan Motor Corporation, Ford Motor Company, Volkswagen Group, Stellantis, BMW Group, Toyota Motor Corporation, ChargeUK, and BVRLA. In a statement following the meeting, the government didn't commit to specific plans on the ZEV mandate, but said it would apply it in a way that "also supports UK economic growth". Britain has made significant strides in transitioning to zero-emission public transportation, particularly in the electric vehicle (EV) bus market. The latest data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows a promising surge in the sector, with 4,932 new units registered in 2023, marking a substantial 44.6% increase from the previous year. A major driver of this growth has been the strong investment in single and double-decker buses, which saw registrations soar by 52.5% and 173.6%, respectively. Additionally, there has been an 18.3% increase in minibuses, reflecting widespread efforts to renew the fleet across the UK. Electric or hydrogen vehicles accounted for an impressive 45.1% of new single and double-decker bus registrations, nearly tripling the market share of new cars. With 1,159 zero-emission buses entering service last year, the UK stands as Europe's largest zero-emission bus market by volume. Initiatives like the Zero Emission Bus Regional Area (ZEBRA) funding have facilitated this progress by incentivising the adoption of clean transportation solutions. However, swift approval and allocation of funds for subsequent rounds of investment are imperative to maintain momentum and achieve national net zero goals. The success in decarbonising bus fleets underscores the feasibility and benefits of transitioning to zero-emission mass mobility. Challenges persist, particularly in the minibus market, where licensing restrictions hinder the widespread adoption of zero-emission options. Accelerating the timeline for license derogations would catalyse investment in zero-emission minibuses, ensuring equitable access to sustainable transportation while mitigating environmental and public health concerns. Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of SMMT, emphasizes the urgency of continued support and innovation in the sector, stating, "Speeding up license derogations could unleash demand in the minibus market, helping provide zero-emission mass mobility for all with the air quality, carbon emission, and wider economic benefits that come with this transition." As Britain leads the way in zero-emission public transportation, it serves as a compelling example for other nations to follow. Prioritizing sustainability and embracing innovative solutions can help accelerate the journey towards a greener, more resilient future. 💡 HIE Grants to help businesses and social enterprises cut carbon. Businesses and social enterprises in the Highlands and Islands looking to reduce the environmental impacts of their operations can now apply to a new Green Grant Fund launched Thursday 26 September. The three-year £2.7m fund was developed by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE). It provides grants of between £20,000 and £250,000 towards projects that reduce carbon emissions and contribute to the region’s net zero ambitions. The Green Grant Fund is aimed at small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and social enterprises that have been trading for at least a year and are eligible to pay non-domestic rates. 🚗 ZEV mandate could backfire, industry warns 🚗 The UK Government’s ZEV mandate is at risk of accidentally harming the country’s EV transition, MPs have been told. Addressing a House of Commons Transport Committee session on the health of the EV market following the delay in the ban on new petrol and diesel cars to 2035, BVRLA chief executive Gerry Keaney said the mandate needed to be applied with some flexibility. He said: “The ZEV mandate is in more danger of creating negative unintended consequences than of acting as a positive driver into the marketplace." Also addressing the committee, Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) head of technology and innovation David Wong spoke of an imbalance that had been created between supply and demand. Vehicle rental keeps Britain moving, helps the economy to grow, and reduces transport emissions. Today we launch our new ‘Rental Credentials’ report, outlining the essential contribution that vehicle rental makes to society and how it underpins the work of sectors of all shapes and sizes.
