Today marks a significant milestone in the fight against climate change as the largest ever national net zero business census is launched in the UK.  ​ The UK Net Zero Business Census launched today by the UK Business Climate Hub in partnership with Planet Mark aims to establish a benchmark for the private sector's contributions towards the UK's national 2050 net zero target. Yesterday we presented a new concept, Voluntary Biodiversity Credits (VBCs), to the attendees at a BNG webinar hosted by National Parks Partnerships. According to a recent paper from the Oxfordshire Local Nature Partnership, BNG (Biodiversity Net Gain) will only provide 10% of the funding needed to reach our national environmental goals. That's an incredible 90% shortfall for nature's recovery. In short, we have to look beyond compliance BNG and we need the private sector to get involved. Enter Voluntary Markets... We are perhaps millions of pounds and years away from measuring biodiversity loss for industries outside of property development, but we can be sure that many of our customers demand companies be transparent, have integrity, and play an active role in nature's recovery. In fact, research lead by the Green Finance Institute warns of a 12% loss in GDP in the UK if we don't address these issues - but more on this in another post... VBCs are in their infancy with the South Downs National Park Authority and partners Earthly being the first in the UK with availability (but hopefully not the last). The World Economic Forum estimates that global demand for VBCs could reach $2 billion in 2030 and $69 billion by 2050. UK companies have shown time and again that they are world leaders in innovation - so let's get on board. Always open for a chat and I'd love to hear your thoughts. South of Scotland Enterprise (SOSE) have created a fund of £300,000 to invest in cycling tourism in Dumfries and Galloway. The project is supporting 30 tourism businesses, social enterprises and community groups in the area to help make the south of Scotland a leading destination for cyclists. Russel Griggs OBE, Chair of SOSE, says, “The aim of the South of Scotland Cycling Partnership is to create one of the leading cycling destinations in the world. Through the Cycling Infrastructure Fund, we are supporting this aim, by helping 30 local tourism organisations to adapt their business models to capitalise on the increasing number of cycling visitors from the Kirkpatrick C2C and 7stanes trail centres.” As a cycling enthusiast myself, I am thrilled at the news. Removing social and environmental levies from electricity bills could save consumers up to £300 a year and incentivise the uptake of heat pumps, a new report by Cornwall Insight commissioned by The MCS Foundation has said.    The UK currently has some of the highest electricity costs in Europe, and this is proving a barrier to the take-up of #heatpumps, as well as driving #fuelpoverty. In part, this is due to levies placed on electricity bills by the Government, which make electricity three times more expensive than gas. It's time to rebalance electricity pricing to help tackle fuel poverty and drive forward the transition to clean heat.
