What’s the JavaScript market like?? Is a question asked on pretty much every call I have at the moment. ✅ The JavaScript market is slowly bouncing back. We’ve seen an increase in job flow, also in direct adverts from both agency and client side which is great ( mostly on perm ). An uptick in perm roles is usually a good indicator of a strong market and contract will soon be to follow. Candidates are getting involved in multiple processes at once. ✅ Time to hire still seems slow. Interviews are taking longer and feedback is delayed. Clients are saying they are wanting to hire but wont move promptly on signing things off/starting the processes or making offers. ✅ There are more experienced candidates on the market. A lot of contracts weren’t extended so there are more people looking. ✅ Seasoned contractors are more open to taking an interesting perm role. In short, things are slowly but surely improving. Demand for Intermediate-level Software Developers is decreasing, resulting in salary levels on offer declining. For the time being it appears that the days of intermediate developers securing 15% - 20% pay increases when moving jobs are over.   Current advertised salaries for software developers in the UK (3 months to June 2024) are down to 2019 levels.   Is this trend mirrored elsewhere in the world? What are the causes for this?

Developers, don't get bullied! Don't comprise significantly!! It's not worth it. I have had a number of conversations recently where developers have stayed with companies for short periods of time for different reasons. 1 short stint at a business can be explained so long as the rest of your CV supports it. However, don't be bullied or blinded by shiny things to compromise on your original search. The grass isn't always greener and you will be looking to move before you are settled in. - Don't move for big money at the cost of enjoyment or happiness - Don't take that promotion to be a senior too early in your career - Don't accept a role that is outside your core responsibilities if you don't feel comfortable -Don't change technologies to secure employment if you don't plan too - Don't jeopardise your working style (Hybrid, remote, flexible hours) - Don't become a people manager if you want to remain an IC It's tough at the moment but staying true to who you are will shine through and help you achieve your long-term goals. Too many short roles will harm your reputation and then blaming every company for them doesn't look great. Have a good day everyone!

Most of the clients we partner with are looking for Rust and Golang talent at the moment. This is usually a hard requirement of at least two years in production. It's understandable why this is a hard requirement, as again most of our clients are looking for people urgently to hit the ground running, who don't need to hold hands. However, if you (a potential client or hiring manager) are using Rust or Golang and are open to speaking to people from different language backgrounds (Java, C++ etc), the talent on the market available now is beyond belief. If you can afford to be flexible with your requirements, now is a brilliant time to hire really intelligent people who (If had production experience) would probably be unattainable.

Are reference checks redundant? Suppose you've got a robust recruitment process for hiring software engineers, hiring managers who are confident in their decision-making, and group consensus from the team. Is there a need for referee checks? It's rare to receive transparent feedback from a referee, mainly because, in my opinion, people fear that that feedback will be exposed. Manual/electronic reports are now the norm, so you have to pick your words wisely. Referee checks conducted over the phone are the most effective medium; they enable both parties to be more candid and phrase things appropriately, but they are arguably less time-effective. The solution? -Fine-tune your recruitment process so you can confidently assess eq/culture/tech skills within a 2-3 stage process, -Upskill hiring managers around recruitment, communication & decision-making, -Ensure your TA, HR, & external recruitment partners are doing their due diligence and deeply understand the profile of candidates that work best in your environment and are doing adequate upfront qualification. On the candidate side, I'm a big proponent of requesting a written recommendation from your direct manager or somebody responsible for your work during your exit from the business. Request to add that to your LinkedIn profile or a separate recommendation doc you can attach to your CV. This will give your next employer more context, help your profile stand out, streamline the process, and alleviate the need to take up previous employers' valuable time. #refereechecks #softwarengineers #recruitment
