🚀 A Bold Idea that Missed the Mark 🎯 So, the Humane AI Pin has been dubbed one of the biggest tech flops of 2024. But honestly, it’s got some interesting lessons for all of us in the tech and design world! Last week I wrote a piece for Dezeen on how the 'worst product ever' had a lot to admire. This screenless smartphone alternative aimed to change how we interact with tech, focusing on our wellbeing instead of constant notifications. While it didn’t quite hit the mark, it raises important questions about how we can create tech that fits seamlessly into our lives without taking over. I was so energized by UX LIVE at Product Design Week in London last year and looking forward to taking part again this Nov! It will be amazing to reconnect as a design community and to share more thoughts on designing for the future alongside so many great speakers and leaders. One thing I keep thinking is that the future may actually be here NOW and already could be reshaping our user experiences. For a long time, we've had humans designing for humans based on what we think humans need and want, and now, we have AI starting to design for humans based on what AI thinks humans may need and want. This could be a shift from UX to what I call, AX (Artificial Experience) — potentially taking us from human-led to AI-led and from design thinking to artificial thinking. This rise of AX might be the beginning of how we may all become intertwined by these new Artificial Experiences. In the talk linked below, I dive deeper into what this means for us as humans and what I think may actually make us human — how that translates into designing for a better human experience in the midst of what may be artificially produced. I've long been a fan of Google when it comes to their design of physical and digital product, but their implementation of Gemini / AI has taken their already household search status to a new level. I'm genuinely so stoked to see this feature roll out. They enhanced search by showing you a relevant excert from the top result but now this takes it a step further to collate results for me in a tangible way. 👏👏 #google #userexperience #AI #gemini #search

It is unclear if this graphic describes the real ambition for AI... just because we can outsource entire domains and organizations to automation, it doesn't mean that we should. i think humans with jobs, for all the kicking and screaming, are happier, more productive, more connected and more purposeful. The key reason why people continue to work is the sense of connection to others, a way to counter your ideas with the ideas of others, make them better through creative collisions and purposeful challenges. Humans with no jobs are humans without a purpose, and that is a scary thought.

Beep. Designer in the bagging area. Alas my time at Tesco has come to an end. During this time l particularly enjoyed looking at AI and how it could help the business. In doing so l had fun in creating a presentation image for a mythical colab, between Tesco and Fred Perry. I imagined that the 2 iconic British brands would collaborate on a new store uniform. *Please note, this project is not officially affiliated with either brand. Here's what l learnt: • Good prompting. Like any creative endeavour, it all starts with a good brief. • Midjourney is a tool. Your creativity is what feeds it.  • Iteration is key and it still required patience and craft. I posted and tweaked 100s of prompts to get images l was ultimately happy with. • While the final images sparked discussion and served as a quick proof of concept. Customers waiting in front of the departures board at Waterloo Station in London to learn what platform their train will arrive and leave from. The current system of last-minute platform announcements across multiple platforms adds unnecessary chaos to the customer journey with people rushing to get to their train with luggage and children. Providing critical train information well in advance of travel can significantly enhance customer satisfaction and streamline the travel process. This may look like a photo of a bit of dodgy pavement and a bin, but it's actually of something I'm obsessed with. It's a desire path. 🌿 I walk down this particular path on the way to my local train station when I commute down to London. But what's so interesting about it? This type of path was created by people going where they want to go rather than where they’re told to go - and it's a perfect metaphor for UX design. It teaches us something really simple: people will always find ways to meet their needs, even if it means working around what’s been designed for them. Some desire paths highlight the gap between design and reality, where user behaviour diverges from intent. Others are an example of the power of listening, evolving into well-worn trails that reflect user input. And the best ones? They’re paths that were designed with the user in mind from the start. So just like the dodgy path in my photo, here's how we can make experiences easier for our users: 🌟 Design isn’t just about creating; it’s about observing. Pay attention to the ways users naturally navigate your product - what they do tells you more than what they say. 🗣️ Adapt to user needs. When users deviate from the “intended path,” don’t force them to try something else or go back. Instead, ask why they chose their route and learn from it. 🤝 Design with, not for. By involving users early and often, you can co-create solutions that feel intuitive from the start. --- Have you ever come across a desire path in the real world?
