This week's chart gives an at-a-glance overview of UK petroleum taxation since 1975. It comes from a recent post by Graham Kellas, Wood Mackenzie’s SVP for Global Fiscal Research, warning that the UK North Sea’s future as an oil and gas producing region “hangs in the balance”. You can see that the total effective rate of tax, including the Energy Profits Levy that began in 2022, has risen to its highest since the early 1990s. Kellas adds: “North Sea oil and gas operators are trying to make long-term financial decisions beyond 2030, but the current fiscal regime does not allow for such clarity." Exciting news - Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub secures FID - by Caithness Chamber of Commerce. ''Hydrogen Scotland member bp Aberdeen Hydrogen Energy Limited – the joint venture between bp and Aberdeen City Council – announced this week that their final investment decision for its Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub project has been agreed. Construction activities are expected to begin before the end of 2024, targeting green hydrogen production from 2026. The Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub will feature a hydrogen production, storage and distribution facility, located at Hareness Road in Aberdeen, which will be powered by electricity generated at a solar farm to be installed on the former Ness landfill site located nearby. Once operational the Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub will have the potential to deliver up to around 300 tonnes of green hydrogen a year through the initial phase of the project, enough to fuel 25 buses and a similar number of other fleet vehicles per day. Most commodity traders rely on “technical analysis” these days. And one of their key charts is the “triangle” shape. Ithaca Energy has agreed to buy nearly all of Eni's UK-based oil and gas producing assets for about 754 million pounds in stock, as it looks to become one of the biggest independent energy companies in the North Sea. The North Sea is an energy-rich region in the Atlantic Ocean that has long been coveted by European oil and gas companies for its potential, but aging reserves and security concerns have made development there challenging. The transaction is part of Eni's broader strategy to develop businesses focused on a geographical area or a specific activity and share the investment efforts with a partner.
