Fantastic COP29 news to have the UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy commit to deliver on the UK's promise to spend £3bn of climate finance on nature, with £1.5bn of that dedicated to forests. Up until roughly 2017, the UK was amongst the lowest Global North donor countries to international nature. Delivering on this £3bn pledge is transformative to our aid programming and brilliant for both some of the poorest people on earth and our planet. And after the failure of the Cali COP16 to progress nature finance, this commitment sends a clear signal around the UK's ambition for global climate and nature leadership. As well as the scale of funding, the focus on delivering for Indigenous Peoples & Local Communities (IP&LC) is extremely welcome. £94m of new programming for IP&LC in the Amazon, a vital ecosystem that is increasingly beset by droughts and wildfires and moves ever closer to its terrifying tipping point. And the UK announced as on track to provide $170m+ towards the $1.7bn Forest Tenure Pledge, supporting IP&LC secure their forest tenure rights, and ready to talk about an ambitious Phase 2 pledge. Good summary of COP29 Azerbaijan from Gareth Redmond-King Over the last two years alone, climate impacts have added £360 to the average household food bill in the UK. British people get this – more than half are worried about food security, and nearly two thirds support provision of climate finance to people who need it overseas – we pay 0.2% of annual public spending in overall climate finance each year. They support it when it is effective, aids self-sufficiency, and there is a benefit for the UK.

A timely and important report here, from Helen Avery and her team. As well as the hard hitting data about the cost of inaction, I really liked their analysis of why we’re failing to act systematically, in what they identify as tragedies of scale and space. For me, the hottest burning platform is under agriculture, in what they could have described as ‘the tragedy of signficance’. Already this winter, we have seen the impacts of changes in weather patterns on our ability to grow and harvest the staples we rely on. A government that cannot secure food resilience for both the short and the long term will be in a very precarious position indeed. It’s time governments align around and prioritise food systems policies, to plan for and mitigate these rapidly escalating risks.

I am pleased to share that WWF-International Director General Kirsten Schuijt has authored an op-ed which sets out our shared WWF global network perspective on the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) Scope 3 requirements and the role of market instruments. Given the highly technical nature of the topic, we’ve also posted a supporting discussion paper ( https://lnkd.in/gKKiwKBE )   Scope 3 emissions, the indirect emissions that occur in a company’s value chain, account for three-quarters of an average company’s climate emissions, but for many sectors, including technology, retail, and consumer goods, that number can top 95 percent. Complex value chains and accounting rules have left many companies struggling to develop comprehensive scope 3 inventories and the appropriate mitigation strategies that can yield measurable emission reductions.   The op-ed and discussion paper together address the need for SBTi (the gold standard for voluntary corporate greenhouse gas goal setting) to simplify target setting and give companies more ways to invest in emissions reductions in and out of their value chains. ​​Credible corporate climate action at scale is essential to meet net zero targets and we will continue to actively engage with SBTi as it revises Scope 3 requirements to promote solutions which are feasible, guided by science and grounded in good governance.    With climate-related impacts happening at an ever-increasing speed, we need to get to a net-zero economy as soon as possible. Did you know that the latest data shows that less than 5% of reported global corporate philanthropic funding is directed towards climate and nature-related themes? Yet corporate philanthropy could be a highly effective tool in climate mitigation and biodiversity conservation - partly because it can harness a unique combination of funding and non-funding tools to maximize impact. Our UBS Optimus Foundation climate & environment portfolio centers nature-based solutions in a highly collaborative approach to conservation, applying our experience in social finance and outcomes-based financing. For example, through our UBS Climate Collective, we’re facilitating a public-private philanthropic partnership to support nine implementing organizations with blue carbon solutions across South-East Asia. This work has already driven a USD 320 investment from the World Bank to further fund nature-based solutions as well as produced a Blue Carbon Impact Framework draft. It’s great to see what others like Cisco Foundation and Salesforce are doing in the space as well! Heading off to Baku tomorrow - there’s always a mixture of nerves and positive energy when off to a COP, but I confess that I have feeling of greater trepidation than usual! #COP29 is the ‘Finance COP’, and what is agreed now will lock in climate action - or inaction - for likely the next ten years. And this coming decade is of course the latest critical decade to at least keep the 1.5 aspiration possible and to prevent devastating impacts on women, men and children. I remember from the 2017 COP, that although Trump was taking the USG out of Paris, there was a groundswell of energy and action from US states, cities and businesses, with a loud and hugely welcome cry of ‘we are still in!’ And we need that same vibe at COP29 from all of the other Parties – a determination to not let the US situation bring down ambition. Rather than it being an excuse to do less, let it be a rallying cry to do more. And if the ambitious fit-for-purpose financial solution cannot be found at this COP, I wonder if perhaps the #NCQG timeframe should only be 5 years, to enable a better solution in the near future? Less than 2 weeks to COP29 and it feels like we’re sleepwalking towards the climate crisis. Despite the ever-worsening scientific predictions on climate change, there is no concomitant political energy to act. According to the IPCC, limiting warming to around 1.5°C requires global greenhouse gas emissions to peak before 2025 at the latest, and be reduced by 43% by 2030 – so the time for change is now. This puts into sharp relief the agreement at COP on climate finance – the New Collective Quantified Goal (the NCQG). This awkwardly-named new finance goal will likely set the ambition for at least ten years, so what is agreed at COP29 will set the parameters for climate action in this critical decade. An agreement that provides the finance that is needed could supercharge climate action and ensure that the precious goals of the Paris Agreement can be achieved. Or it could deeply undermine the Paris Agreement, making achieving 1.5 degrees impossible and eroding the remaining trust in the multilateral process. Whichever party wins the upcoming Election, the transition to net-zero is going to have to factor in their plans. But, in the short-term it will be costly and require co-ordination. This briefing, funded by the Nuffield Foundation and written by Patricia Sanchez Juanino analyses the current policy framework and looks at the options available to effectively handle the green transition. #ClimateChange #GeneralElection2024

🌳 Central banks, regulators and supervisors are urged to intervene in main drivers of nature loss and climate change alongside governments WWF´s Greening Financial Regulation Initiative launches today its first Introductory deforestation and conversion Guide for central banks, financial regulators and supervisors. Deforestation and conversion of forests and other ecosystems are an important cause of nature and climate related risks that can lead to the collapse of entire financial systems.
