Great meeting today with George Barnsley F.Inst. PA discussing, among many things, how the importance of understanding both yourself and others in moments of high stress cannot be overestimated. Knowing your own triggers, being self-aware while at the same time "reading the room" before you have even started the investigation or conversation are key to knowing how to respond. Building rapport and developing a relationship that engenders trust from the start all begins with this awareness.

While we spend a lot of our time getting clients' news in the headlines, we're also working quietly in the background for many others, managing their stakeholder engagement programmes. One particular area of stakeholder expertise for Liz Lean PR is in planning comms, where we have a solid track record in working alongside planners to build influence and positive sentiment for schemes ahead of planning submission - thereby creating as smooth a path forward as possible through the complex planning process. Let's face it - if your local community and influential local stakeholders aren't convinced of your scheme's benefits, convincing the planning committee to rubber stamp it is always going to be an uphill struggle - leading to more delays, more money, and more stress in resubmitting or appealing. Over the years, I’ve had countless conversations with PR and comms professionals about the highs, the lows, and the constant need to adapt in our ever-evolving industry. It struck me — these stories, challenges, and lessons deserve to be shared. That’s why we launched the Viva PR Podcast PR in the Real World a couple of weeks ago. This is not intended to be your typical industry talk shop. It’s real people, sharing real stories about how they’ve tackled the biggest hurdles in their careers — and become stronger. From a personal point of view, the podcast has been a great way to connect with new people in the industry and reconnect with long-time friends I’ve worked alongside over the years. The stories they’ve shared have reminded me why I enjoy being involved in this industry in the first place — it’s full of creativity, resilience, and, above all, people who genuinely care about making an impact. From managing crises to navigating digital transformation, the conversations are honest, insightful, and, most importantly, practical. In short, hosting this podcast has been a privilege. However, I have to say I am not a big fan of hearing my own voice or seeing myself in these clips. I have always been the one behind the camera I don’t run towards the limelight. Don’t underestimate the power of your news stories. News is important because it sends out multiple messages and delivers on a variety of levels. While it’s always nice when your industry mag supports your efforts, news can play a strategic role in your external comms. It’s a useful mechanism to let your audience know you are dynamic, and achieving things. Winning things. Part of the game, competing and creating a valuable business. News conveys to your staff that they are part of something successful, recognised and to be celebrated. It can generate feelings of loyalty and pride. Motivating and encouraging. News can serve to validate your customers’ decision to entrust their brands to your care. And, a positive headline can encourage your potential customers to join your happy band. Missing out on projects because we're not "experts" in a particular industry - it hurts. Industry experience isn’t what makes the perfect PR partner. If you can master PR in one sector, you can 💯% nail it in another. I've worked with clients in sustainability, logistics, construction, charity, architecture, creative and design, professional services, education, manufacturing, retail and lots of other fields. With the Goldings Communications team in the mix, there’s a hell of a lot more to add. The game plan and approach is always the same - to use the power of an organisation’s story to deliver relevant and targeted PR activities. Comms Unplugged has become a staple part of my annual CPD, not least because they manage to get some amazing speakers who aren't doing the circuit of every other comms conference. And the unique learning environment - nature, basically, the rich Dorset countryside - means you actually retain that learning, it hasn't frazzled out of your brain on the train home. But there is so much more about that little field of dreams. So many things I look back on with pride that wouldn't have happened if I hadn't taken a chance on doing something a bit different in the first place: 👩‍🎓 I would not have got #chartered or taken my Level 7 in Crisis Comms 👑 I would not have got an interim position with the eternally fabulous Louisa D., which then led to me working on two Royal funerals and a birthday. 👩‍💼 Without Louisa's support (and the odd good natured kick up the proverbial), I would not be in the role I am now in 🤝 I would not have met the talented and supportive Dan Holden, and had his wonderful mentorship that has had such an impact on me 🎨 I would not have sent Alan Oram and his amazing team at Alive With Ideas an RFP for our new brand - and just look at what we did together! 📔 Even my contribution to Rachel Miller's wonderful book has its roots in that little corner of Dorset 🤗 I would not have the wonderful network of colleagues and friends that I have, that support me daily and share their own skills, worries, thoughts and achievements. You know who you are. And it's not been all take - I've been able to touch other people's lives and careers too, but that's their story to tell. So why not give #CommsUnplugged a go? The least that will happen is you have a fun weekend camping in a beautiful part of the world with great food and great people, and you will have some great #CommsLearning and #CPD. The Industrial Strategy Green Paper, released earlier this week, is one of the many key moments that have taken place early in the life of this Government🌹 The Green Paper sets out an indication of Labour's plans to deliver long-term growth through harnessing innovation and infrastructure development.
