Thanks to BBC Look East's Alex Dunlop for interviewing me to get Suffolk Chamber of Commerce's (rather truncated) thoughts on both immediate and long-term solutions to the many #OrwellBridge issues (package starts 12:58). Our plan: “The current and unforeseen closure of one westbound lane on the Orwell Bridge and the resulting traffic delays in and around Ipswich is quite simply bad for business and bad for every road user affected. It is also reputationally embarrassing for #Suffolk. Such a brilliant day in at Fora in London yesterday with the Enterprise Nation marketing and community team. We discussed exciting plans for supporting small businesses in 2025 including the epic StartUp Show returning for its 11th year in January 🙌 If you’re running a small business, you need to join Enterprise Nation! We were also joined by special guests Becky Ackerman from I Do Handmade and Moyin O. from Mr Desserts. They are Enterprise Nation members who shared fab feedback on how they use the platform and what they look for when it comes to business support. Providing us with amazing inspiration on how to grow an awesome community was James 🤠 Mayes who built Mind the Product into a business with conferences worldwide and meet-ups in over 200 cities. As a journalist, It was great to hear how trusted and expert content was at the heart of its success and as a meet-up host, I loved his quote about finding members of the community to run local events: “The local organisers were champions of the craft and they cared about it.” In case you’re wondering about the pic, Daniel Woolf is behind the TV. I love what I do, but there are some things you really shouldn’t hire me for. JFDI tasks where thinking and listening isn’t asked for or expected. Scenarios where PR is made to sit in the corner and only speak when spoken too. Supporting the ‘all publicity is good publicity’ delusion. Not everyone is a celebrity with a redemption story to use…. Thoughts on what colour to wear other than black, gym routines, or how the LI algorithm actually works What you can absolutely hire me for, whether a brand, business or agency, is: Comms strategy and clarity in making sense of all the threads you are trying to tie into one Honest appraisal, review, fixing or retooling of your story, messages, narrative and place. Board level advisory,  mentoring, positive challenge, fractional support, and helping with the 'stuff' that just keeps you awake at night. Opinions and an experienced view of what works brilliantly in PR and what crashes and burns like an overconfident ‘freebie clothes' strategy  The thinking time you know you don’t have for big tasks, live projects or the crucial things currently gathering dust. Fashion advice can be offered if you insist, but the honest answer will probably still be ’wear black’

Good morning today spent with one of our clients at 44 Communications Ltd talking through the results of recent research into one of their core channels. In the past (read: pre-covid) we used to run semi-regular Focus Groups to find out what employees were interested in for the channel. Whilst they were valuable, they took a lot of time to organise and pulled hard-pressed workers off the job for an extended period of time. Not easy to do when there are deadlines and priorities competing for attention. So, this time we worked with the client on a programme of 'Speed focus groups' - fast conversations with employees asking a set of questions and quickly exploring themes. No more than a few minutes of time but some great insights and ideas raised. Added to survey results, these give some flavour and life to the numbers, helping us work with the client to frame an action plan. It's not the first time we've done these. It can be hard getting opinions from front line workers whose priority is service delivery on tight schedules and with limited resources. So, it's important we take time to design measurement approaches that fit their world rather than demand they fit into ours. Just goes to show, research and insight can be done even when operating circumstances may make it seem difficult. It's always worth asking the question "what do you think about...". #internalcommunications #research #engagement #measurement #channels
