Reading the latest #evfleetworld magazine got me thinking further on EVs PHEV and RVs seeing (1-2year old) EV sell for 50% off and more at auction, does this tax increase coming and new product availability (70mile EV on PHEV) Now reduce the traditional PHEV leaders values? For employees a newer model hybrid will cost them much less a month than the current standard and could save companies off a much more expensive full EV! 70 is the new 30! #fleet #electric #ev #phev #tax #companycar #demand

Lots of diverse topics covered this week, as its a quiet one on the news front. Main takeaway for me, is the unintended consequences I can see from the new autonomous vehicle legislation in the UK. As companies will be held 100% responsible for any incidents whilst in autonomous mode, they won't deploy their tech - this is a good thing. Unfortunately it will cause an explosion in Level 2+ or Level 2++ named systems, which means us drivers will be held responsible for the poorly made system and its failures (some are in the actual concept of system, let alone the actual competence of it). Some are already abdicating responsibility by deploying such technology on our roads and the naming is pure marketing as there is no such thing as Level 2+ or ++.

Karhoo has called in administrators for the second time in its brief history, and this time it looks like there will be no resurrection, with its owners saying it is “not viable”. What went wrong? Karhoo started off as a price comparison booking app, and under #renault ownership it became a supply/demand matching service for taxi operators and the taxi trade. But it never seemed to gain any traction against ride-hailers such as #uber and #freenow or aggregators such as #cmac. 3 years ago, I failed my A-Levels. Now, I'm in Propulsion Engineering at JLR. Aug 2021 was a nightmare. I know there'll be a lot of "I'm pleased to share..." on here so I thought I would tell my story and how I recovered to help uplift any disheartened students who think they've "messed it all up" or there's nothing they can do to fix their career trajectory. This'll be much more informal, since I'm speaking to students about my own personal experience. My A-Levels started in 2019. A hard set of subjects that always elicited some sort of reaction when people asked me what I was doing in college. COVID hit; the brunt of it was spread over my 2 years and I wasn't disciplined enough to study the way I should have nor did I have the foresight to see how it would come back to bite me. I spent my time on things that didn't matter and my work ethic deteriorated. I was the worst version of myself. The exams came in 2021, and despite the fact half the content was removed to compensate for COVID, I missed both Uni offers, and the grades I got were massively boosted because my teachers liked me, since it was at their discretion that year. In reality, my work was ungradable. When everything is riding on these results, it can feel like the world is crumbling around you and your self-image takes a massive hit. I imagine that's how a lot of you feel right now. So now you're wondering, how did I go from ungradable A-Level work to a job at JLR between Y2 & 3 of an engineering degree? Simple, I tried again. I knew, deep down, that no matter what excuse I made, I failed because I did not work hard enough. I could blame COVID, I could blame my teachers, I could even try to blame the government, but I knew that in my case it was my fault and that I could do better. So, I made the executive decision to go against family advice and resit Year 13. I won't lie to you, it wasn't pleasant. I was very lonely, in a terrible state of mind, doubtful on whether I had made the right choice and deeply ashamed of myself. But, I knuckled down and got to work. I worked and worked and worked because I had to learn and put into practice 2 years of academic content in 7 1/2 months. It was worth it. In the end, I went from essentially UUU, to ABB. A drastic change. Nothing miraculous, no A*A*A*, but enough to prove to myself I could do more if I applied myself, and enough to restart my life in what I deemed the right direction. I started studying Mechanical Engineering at Lancaster University, made friends for life, founded and ran a society that teaches engineering to 100+ Year 1 students and am aiming for a 1:1. Knuckle down mate, and go again. "Lock in" if you will. It's a rough day, it'll be a rough few months, it could be a rough year. But try again if you KNOW you could've done better, because I swear to you, it's worth it. Anything is possible if you work hard enough. There is light at the end of the tunnel, even if you can't see it yet. #alevels2024 #resits

The only comparison worth making is to yourself. That was the lesson I reflected on yesterday as I had the privilege of being a passenger in my friend David’s Mini JCW Challenge at a MotorSport Vision Ltd track day at Snetterton. We had an incredible time navigating the circuit, and despite sharing the track with more powerful cars, David held his own. On paper, we should have been left behind, but the lesson we learned: Both on the track and in life -is that maintaining the status quo gets you nowhere. By experimenting with different lines, braking points, and corner entries, we optimised his driving and got the absolute best performance from the car. Benchmarking against others was futile; variables like temperature, tyre pressure, and track conditions were constantly changing. The only consistent reference we had was the feel -how smooth was the lap? What feedback were we getting from the car in terms of slip and vibration? Business is no different. No two moments, decisions, or situations are ever the same, even when you have hundreds, thousands, or even millions of data points to draw from. Each situation is unique. While I am a strong advocate of data-driven decision-making, there’s also an essential role for intuition -sometimes the best guide is the feel of the situation. As leaders, we must continuously optimise our own performance, learning from the unique variables of each moment. Data is invaluable, but so is the ability to listen to your instincts and adjust accordingly. Growth and innovation come from experimentation, learning, and continuous improvement -both on the track and in the boardroom. #Growth #Business #Leadership #ContinuousImprovement #OperationalExcellence

These are deeply concerning times for the automotive industry, with massive investments in plants and new zero emission products under intense pressure. Slowdowns in the global market – especially for EVs – are impacting production output, with the situation in the UK particularly acute given we have arguably the toughest targets and most accelerated timeline but without the consumer incentives necessary to drive demand. The cost of stimulating that demand and complying with those targets is huge and, as we are seeing, unsustainable. Urgent action is therefore needed and we will work with government on its rapid review of the regulation and the development of an ambitious and comprehensive Industrial Strategy to assure our competitiveness. https://lnkd.in/eVVWfkVb

Screen grab below is from today's statement on Stellantis' Luton plant. From this, it does seem like Jonathan Reynold's main issue with the ZEV mandate is the trading where those who under-perform on EV sales have to buy credits from those who over-perform or else face penalties. But removing trading ("transfers" as he calls it) as the main flexibility mechanism does pretty much undermine the ZEV mandate as a whole, which gets it statutory basis from the Climate Change Act's power for government to introduce emissions trading schemes under secondary legislation. In the past week we have seen Peugeot, Nissan and Polestar slash their EV prices by between $15,000 and $25,000. Of course, it's likely the pricing changes were corrections, aligning what they charge with what's being paid in the market. EV affordability is paramount, and these are massive wins for consumers. Discounts, the availability of State rebates, and Federal tax exemptions are making EVs absolute no-brainers for many people. It's a lesson, though, in the cold hard reality that the market (aka consumers) ultimately set a product's price. It's also clear that the wave of affordable and modern EVs from Chinese domestic OEMs is distorting the wider market to a large degree. Both the new EV market now and the used EV market tomorrow. With an MG 4 going for $40k, who would spend $50k+ on a Leaf? By the way, EV sales in Australia are up 30% this year (YoY), which in isolation is great. Except EV sales in 2023 grew 160% YoY. The rate has slowed for the time being and the next wave of adoptees are hitting pause. I'm not anti-EV. I drive one. I love them. But OEMs do not slash their prices when a market is performing optimally. You cannot analyse a market without accepting a fundamental reality. Cosworth Unveils Its Most Powerful Hypercar Engine Yet and Eyes Future with Alternative Fuels Cosworth, a powerhouse in British automotive engineering, has revealed its most powerful hypercar engine to date. This announcement coincides with the debut of the Bugatti Tourbillon on June 20. The new hypercar continues a prestigious line of high-performance vehicles that showcase Cosworth’s exceptional engineering, including the Aston Martin Valkyrie, Gordon Murray Automotive T.50, and the Bizzarrini Giotto. Developing high-performance engines has been the backbone of Cosworth since the company’s inception. In the last decade, they have broadened their capabilities, manufacturing world-class engines not only for automotive and motorsport but also for aerospace and marine applications. Hydrogen may not be the primary focus for car makers currently, either in fuel cell or ICE form. Despite this, one area where it will almost certainly play a key role in decarbonization is racing. The heat of competition is where Cosworth hopes their hydrogen engines will come into play, leveraging their legacy in engine development to pave the way for a greener future.
