🚀 Levelling Up University Teaching with Live Projects 🎓 | Lucy Cokes, Falmouth University | 06 Nov 2024 In her work at Falmouth University, Lucy Cokes has developed the Hierarchy of Live Briefs—a framework designed to help educators embed real-world, client-facing projects into university teaching, ensuring that these opportunities are both equitable and impactful. Live projects—those involving real clients and actual business challenges—offer students a unique advantage over traditional 'mock briefs'. By working on live briefs, students gain invaluable employability skills, align with industry practices, and build portfolios with tangible, paid work experience. This type of hands-on learning not only boosts students’ confidence but also increases their chances of securing placements and full-time roles after graduation. However, there are challenges. Live briefs can inadvertently disadvantage students with outside commitments, such as part-time jobs or caregiving responsibilities. Lucy has worked to ensure that opportunities are inclusive and that no student is left behind. The use of unpaid internships or extracurricular live briefs outside of class time is discouraged, as it often perpetuates inequality. Instead, integrating paid live projects into the formal curriculum ensures that all students have access to these valuable opportunities, regardless of their financial background. Lucy’s Hierarchy of Live Briefs provides a roadmap for integrating these projects into assessments, pushing for a more inclusive and equitable approach to real-world learning. Her work is helping shift the culture towards a system where live briefs are not only beneficial to students but also align with industry needs.
