Really pleasing to see the UK Government confirm a Pensions Schemes Bill to legislate for three important DC developments which have been in the pipeline for several years: the new VFM framework, deferred small pots solution and decumulation framework. We are supportive of these measures and together, they should help to move the dial on improving retirement outcomes. In particular, we are hopeful that the new Government’s support for the FCA’s advice/guidance boundary review will work in tandem with a new statutory duty on trustees to offer access to retirement solutions, including a default, to give savers a more sustainable retirement income. #VFM #DC #evershedssutherland #AGBR

💼 Private Equity’s Tax Debate: Pragmatism Over Ideology 💼 As the UK government and private equity leaders engage in yet another debate over taxation, it’s clear that neither side holds a definitive argument. The Treasury is seeking £565m through tax reforms, targeting private equity compensation often taxed as capital gains rather than income. This has prompted talks of relocation to more favorable jurisdictions. However, the reality is more nuanced. While some executives may consider relocating, it's unlikely that entire businesses will follow suit. Globally, countries like Germany and Spain already offer favorable tax structures for private equity compensation. The core issue is the fine line between income and capital gains. For example, carried interest, a key compensation method for private equity managers, is taxed at 28% in the UK, while performance bonuses face a much higher rate at 45%. This distinction fuels the ongoing debate over fairness in taxation. Rather than continuing an ideological standoff, the focus should shift to how these earnings are taxed and the conditions required to qualify for favorable rates. NEW MERGED R&D EXPENDITURE CREDIT SCHEME Since 2002, R&D Tax incentives have been claimable under two separate schemes, one for SMEs and the other for non-SMEs or large companies. The rules between both schemes are different and can become quite complicated. With an aim of simplifying the schemes, the government has introduced the New Merged R&D Expenditure Credit Scheme. Additionally, to provide further support to R&D Intensive SMEs, the Enhanced R&D Incentive Support (ERIS) scheme has been introduced.
