Yesterday I was reminded that no matter how far I've come as a dev I will never be immune from forehead-slapping embarrassment in debugging... I hit an error trying to make some slightly unusual customizations using the Web API in a PCF to relate two records, neither of which were the record I was "on". the error message was your usual unhelpful "it broke, maybe check the documentation?" I've come to expect from a Microsoft product, so I dove in, head-first. I tried at least half a dozen different ways to tackle the problem, and kept getting increasingly esoteric and useless error messages. finally, after over 8 hours of debugging, I got the same original error and threw up my hands in resignation. then I clicked the generic documentation link in the error message and it took me directly to a "common errors" page, the first one on the list being exactly my problem: "this WebApi operation is case sensitive, dummy." One capitalized letter (and a reversion back to 3 commits ago) and everything was working as it should. Thank you, gods of code, for keeping me ever humbled.

LinkedIn is Brilliant ain’t it?  You come on here, early in the morning and share your nonsense thoughts, and people come along and like it and comment on it.  You can use it to build your network, share your thoughts and sell your stuff, which is brilliant!  Slide into people’s DM’s and sell to them even though they’ve never heard of you before, share photos that wouldn’t look out of place on Only Fans and build a massive following, brilliant!  Write posts about nothing and get loads of impressions, then share something brilliant and useful and get nothing.  Like, you know, the other day, I shared a post about how to keep safe in your business and why it’s important, but nobody cared.  The next day, I told everyone about my favourite biscuits and got loads of engagement… brilliant!  But it's not brilliant if you’re the “this isn’t Facebook police”, they hate that kind of thing, they don’t understand what’s brilliant about social networks is that you can make relationships with new people who decide if they like you or not because of your posts, and when you find your tribe, they really want to support you which is BRILLIANT!

I asked him a few questions on his time at QA, he shares his thoughts below: What's kept you at QA for so long? I’ve been at QA for just over 8 years now and I’ve done a variety of jobs in that time. One of the reasons which keeps me here is the culture. I genuinely work with not only a supportive team and manager, but also a whole office. Regardless of how much interaction you have with people in the office, they want you to do well, and everybody is pulling in the same direction. There’s also continual development opportunities to progress and grow with the company which is a big factor in being here for so long. 3 favourite parts of working here? The people – I work with hardworking and supportive people which makes the tougher days, easier What we do – we make a difference to young people and give them a start in their career Social aspects – we do a lot of work year on year for a variety of charities and have regular local and company wide incentives including trips in recent years to Barcelona, Las Vegas & Hvar What sort of skills do you think someone would need to work here? Being a team player. We learn as much from others as we do on our own, so you need to be willing to help others. A hard-worker. You definitely reap what you sow in this job so putting in the graft will get you far. A good human. Lunch time thought Whilst I love that git is a wonderful event sourced distributed ledger I also like that its criminal to rewrite commits because of this But I also hate that once again I committed something I wish I hadn't and now i have to go change the roles This to me smells of a design problem - how can we as an industry be exposing ourselves to this risk like this? There has to be a better way. There is a usability problem in here - I know better, but when going fast it is excruciatingly easy to miss something. I keep seeing console *commands* with *secure data* in them that should never be there. We have a system that has bad cohesion. The command changes as the API changes The secure data changes when the organisation changes But our API munge these to seperate reasons for change together into a single command. Should we start giving examples of things like that that depend upon env vars only? What do you think? #CI #ContinuousImprovement #XP #Security Sure pre-commit hooks are great - but when github actions are easy to edit inline we really need something to check for id like strings and really interrogate us wrt comitting them.

He wanted the following- 24/7 support and a phone answered Architecture reworked to be the best it can be still balancing cost Easy flip to a cold Azure environment in a different region if 𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗼𝗻 Reduce his Azure spend and the support costs from his local Microsoft partner Nov - 24 24/7 support, with ever developing automation, that fixes before a client even raises a ticket Get people whom really, now what they are doing to re architect - easy wins here, no wonder it was going down(Certified partners.....that badge does not mean much) Cold back up - sorted Bill heading down on track for 20% ish savings already on Azure and the partners support Signing global client in Brazil, the support requirement covered and for less money than before. Full named case study to follow - Microsoft partners selling Azure support may have a problem, as their model is dying THINK DIFFERENT - GET A DIFFERENT RESULT - DO THE SAME AND GET........

First real customer walks in and asks where the bathroom is. The bar bursts into flames, killing everyone. A QA engineer walks into a bar, WITH a team of QA AI agents. Asks AI agents to test the app while drinking an ice-cold Modelo Especial. Trained AI agents order X factor of Y elements in Z universes, in parallel using customer behavior data to identify common patterns in the test coverage. The QA engineer keeps drinking and curates the strategy. Real customer walks in, and shares a Modelo with the QA engineer. Lessons: 1. AI is here to help QAs, not just replace them 2. Your dev team is under resourced Spoiler - it always will be Don't get trapped thinking if you just had two more (or fifty more) devs you'd be able to work through the backlog and get ahead. The problem is that teams try and filter and prioritise *down stream* on outputs. 100's of outputs. Try filtering and prioritising *up stream* on strategic outcomes that matter to the business (and across the business).

Services like Checkly are so good they start to feel like an unfair advantage. Props to Tim Nolet and team, especially for getting OTel fixes pushed through with Vercel! If you're doing any amount of automated e2e testing it's well worth a look. #checkly #playwright #awesome
