Rewards Policy 🏆 How sure are we that certificates, badges, merit points, prizes, special mentions, progress awards, Presentation Day fuss and so on IS what actually motivates pupils? I think it is one of the biggest misconceptions in schools today. I was visiting a school yesterday, doing workshops with Years 7 and 8. I asked the Year 7s a very simple question: "Are you motivated by the school giving you badges, certificates and house points." Without hesitation they all murmmered - "no, not really." With end-of-year Speech / Presentation / Prize Giving day season about to erupt perhaps this is a moment to ask the pupils what they think of these events. The biggest question, IMO, to ask is, "Are the awards being given out at our end-of-year ceremony fair?" I can guarantee you won't like the answer and if you have the courage to dig a little deeper, explore why they feel they're unfair, you will uncover some deep resentment about what the adults feel is a joyous and celebratory day. If rewarded meritocracy is meant to motivate pupils - and it doesn't - then we should just stop doing it. Believe me, the world will not stop turning and we'll encourage pupils to value intrinsic rewards instead.

Great news from UCAS. Level 3 apprenticeships are to be recognised with UCAS points, demonstrating to learners and universities the value of the work completed. This means that their is career progression opportunity through higher education that might otherwise have not been apparent or even available. So, a young person completes an apprenticeship, in a skilled trade, with successful completion and experience gained in work, opportunities to return to study for progression for example into business development or business management.

Do you remember your first day of Year 7? When I was working in a school full-time as Head of English, the first day of Year 7 was always one of my favourite moments of the school year! There’s something magical about the freshness of it all—a new uniform, crisp stationery, a different building, and, most importantly, a chance to begin anew. Everything about that day brimmed with endless possibility. I was always in awe as I watched children enter the school, full of excitement and a touch of anxiety, knowing they would eventually grow into confident young individuals, each with their own unique thoughts, feelings, and ideas about the world. The newness of the day also takes me back to my own first day of Year 7 (many moons ago). I don’t remember much about my headteacher, but I’ll never forget the words he shared that day. As an 11-year-old embarking on my own fresh start, his words ignited something in me: "You’ve all come here as Year 7s, and when you leave in Year 11, you’ll be completely different people, hopefully a step closer to your dreams. From today, start thinking about what you want those dreams to be." So, friends, colleagues, former students, what advice were you given as a Year 7 student? What stood out about your first day?
