We are making some really important steps in the right direction to better support our neurodiverse candidates. Candidates with autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, dyspraxia and Tourette's syndrome are now being given extra support, including: 🛤️ A step-by-step breakdown, including timings, of each part of the recruitment process and who and what it will involve. 🛤️ Providing images of the interview room layout so candidates can visualise the environment ahead of the meeting. 🛤️ Permission to bring written notes into the interview. 🛤️ The offer and option to supply some of the interview questions in advance to help candidates prepare. There is much more to learn and complete but with the help of our neurodiversity action group, including members with lived experiences is educating the TA team into making improvements to our candidate experience. #northerntrains #neurodiversity #candidateexperience #talentacquisition

A question for all apprentice training providers. What current planning are you undertaking to assess the impact that a Labour Government's change from the Apprenticeship Levy to a broader Skills Levy will have on your business? Are you identifying how the funding of alternative, often shorter qualifications, will affect your apprenticeship offer? Are you mapping across those other qualifications? Are you looking at different alternative qualifications that you might be able to deliver in your specialist sectors? If this plan comes to fruition, it could mean the death of some of apprenticeship standards, as employers flock to an alternative. This might be especially so for standards that contain a mandatory qualification. No-one knows if or when all of this might happen, but it is surely worth considering the strategic impact on your business if it did.

It was brilliant to launch 'Flexible working for all' this morning with Astrid Allen from the Institute for Employment Studies at a webinar alongside our expert panellists, Louise Tait, ANDREA WILLIAMS-MCKENZIE CBE and Ben Franklin. And truly energising to be among people so committed to the value of flexible working and to making it a reality for everyone. Thanks to all for joining and contributing questions and challenge! Here are some of my key takeaways: ▪ With a new government committed to flexibility by default, our report on giving frontline workers greater autonomy and control over their working patterns is timely. ▪ Leadership teams need to be engaged and see the value of flexible working, for people and their organisation. ▪ Avoid making assumptions about how employees want to work. Consult them! Ensure they're involved in the process of organising new ways of working. ▪ Communicate clearly about any changes to ways of working, this is especially vital for inclusion. ▪ Job quality is a pressing issue given rising economic inactivity, driven by poor health, and an aging population. Flexibility is important to open work to more people. ▪ Experiment! Even in the most operationally challenging roles such as nursing, it is possible to introduce greater flexibility. How can businesses and colleagues be effective allies to Black employees year-round? #BlackHistoryMonth #LinkedInNewsUK I was privileged to hear Lee Chambers speak recently on the topic of allyship and loved the definition he shared from the old French word “allier” meaning to combine, unite and bring together. Having worked in the DEI space for over 2 decades, before it was a well-known term, I have seen awareness days, weeks and months rise in popularity.  They do serve a purpose to educate and of course raise ‘awareness’ but real inclusive work requires ongoing commitment and action, far beyond celebrating Black History Month. Here are some practical ways to be an effective ally: 👂🏻Active Listening: Engage in open conversations to understand the unique challenges faced by Black colleagues and create regular safe spaces for dialogue. 👌🏻Check in & reach out: Show genuine curiosity and compassion during challenging times (such as the recent UK race riots). You don’t need to have the answers, get comfortable with the uncomfortable. 📚Educate Yourself: Don’t rely on your Black colleagues to educate you. Take time to learn about the history, culture, and contributions of Black individuals. 🗣️Advocate: Actively support policies and practices that promote diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging within the workplace. 👐🏻Mentorship Programs: Offer mentorship opportunities and peer support, specifically designed to support the growth of Black employees. 🥳Celebrate Diversity: Acknowledge and celebrate Black history and culture. 💗Hold Each Other Accountable: Encourage colleagues to speak up against racism and bias. Create a culture where everyone feels responsible for inclusivity. Say something is wrong and take action with clarity, calmness, confidentiality and clear communication. 🎙️Amplify Voices: Share the work and ideas of Black colleagues. Ensure they have visibility and recognition within the organisation. 👄Words Matter: As a business, establish a literacy that is defined, shared and understood. Individuals and organisations all have a responsibility to nurture an authentic, inclusive culture where everyone is able to thrive. ⚠️Be aware that there is often a vast difference between your intent and actual impact. What does allyship mean to you? Can you share any real life examples of allyship you have experienced?

What do you do with used, no longer usable uniforms? Do they hit landfill? Would you like to see it recycled into meaningful products that genuinely support and help people in need? Diane Corr is on the look out for businesses to support the fantastic work she and the team do at HMP Low Newton. The ladies at HMP Low Newton take in uniform and create Tote bags for foodbanks up and down the country, saving on single use plastic carrier bags, and they also make items of clothing to issue to those rough sleeping during the colder months. This initiative has winners all round: Businesses genuinely support their #ESG agenda #Foodbanks gain and minimize costs #roughsleepers gain by having some winter wear #theplanet gains by reducing landfill #newskills are trained to support women back in to employment after a custodial sentence If you're looking for a solution to your used uniform challenge give either myself or Diane Corr a shout as we've run out of uniform!
