I’m still thinking about the electric scenes after attending last night’s UEFA Champions League match at Wembley Stadium between Real Madrid C.F. and Borussia Dortmund, where Real made the most of its chances and lifted the trophy with a 2-0 victory. PLEASE DON’T KILL ENGLISH FOOTBALL’S BIGGEST TREASURE! What is most impressive with English football, viewed from abroad? Is it the glamour and global impact of the Premier League? Or is it rather the quality and engagement you’ll find in the many tiers below, all the way through the English Football League to The National League and downwards? I’m from Norway, and my take on this is quite simple. England is one out of several European countries with an impressive premier division, but it is the only country where football is being played with top quality and intensity, high attendance, and strong media coverage in the tiers below, in such a big scale as the case is in the EFL and The National League. 20 Premier League clubs, 72 EFL clubs, and 72 National League clubs. That is quite some landscape! For everyone engaged in the tiers below the Premier League, the FA cup is English football’s biggest treasure. This is where the underdogs are allowed to challenge stronger opponents, and every now and then (or quite often) they are also able to bite. History has seen many FA cup clashes with unexpected outcomes, and the possibility of a replay has been a massive carrot for many small clubs playing top tier opponents. Next season, this carrot will no longer be there. To protect the Premier League clubs against an overload of matches, replays are to be dropped from the first round onwards. Furthermore, the FA cup final will be moved to the penultimate weekend of the Premier League campaign. This clearly shows the value of FA cup replays for every stakeholder in English football except from the 20 Premier League clubs, and I do hope the decision to drop replay will be overturned before the 2025/26 season. #football

According to Simon Ramo in his book 'Extraordinary Tennis for the Ordinary Player', there's a key difference between professional tennis and amateur tennis:   - In professional tennis, you have to play to win. You go for more powerful serves, sharper angles, trickier spin, because if you don't, you make the game too easy and your opponent will punish you. - In amateur tennis, 80% of points come from unforced errors. Want to win an amateur tennis game? Keep the 140mph ace in your back pocket and just try to limit mistakes.   In other words, professional tennis is a game of winning. Amateur tennis is a game of not losing. My pet theory is that because culture disproportionately highlights games of winning (high-end sports and arts are tailormade to this, social media dramatically overrepresents the far right tail of the bell curve), we're all a little prone to overestimating a hero narrative in our own jobs.   Working across our portfolio though, it's become clear to me that our most successful leaders don't spend much time worried about how fast their metaphorical serve is. Instead, they win the game of not losing. They're relentlessly focused on things like:   - Setting clear, aligned definitions of success - Overcommunication - Demonstrating empathy for their team - Meeting with clients personally - Knowing their numbers   Does this map to what others have seen? If so, are there things you'd add to the list as focus points for highly effective leaders?

The difference between Padel and Tennis? 🎾 The amount of marketing investment, targeting a wider audience with easy to use app to book courts and ability to meet new people! Ideal for younger people who seek communities! 👏 Over the last year alone, Padel courts have grown 60% in the UK. Yet Tennis struggles with acquiring a younger audience. Why? People assume tennis is expensive & stuck up. I agree that Tennis club websites are old, often FB groups are utilised over IG & enquiring to join feels a little overwhelming. However, for someone who plays every week I love tennis: - yearly membership tends to average about £25 a month - great community feel & you meet new people - group tennis lessons are cheap if you're new to the sport - playing frequently increases life expectancy by a decade (highest than any other sport) Consensus? It shows that no matter how good your product, or service offering is - if you don't get it in front of enough people, or market it correctly then you won't grow. -------- On average, when playing doubles match for 1:30hrs (for reference I am not that good ha!) I burn around 500 calories - my friends can never believe when I tell them that. The best thing? I actually enjoy it! 🎾 This vs Barry's class running out of breath for 1hr and hating my life (sorry Barry's!) is my favourite weekly cardio! Consensus? Educating people about your product, or service offering will only benefit your growth. Telling people a reason why they should use your product/service rather than just telling them about you assuming people will know the reasons why they need to buy your product is.not.enough! Tell them your USPs! Sorry Padel fans I know it's 'easier & quicker' to pick up than Tennis 😉 either way the biggest takeaway is = choose your marketing wisely to grow your brand! If you are the CEO or leader of a branded organisation, you are facing a very specific personal brand challenge. You have to be the face of the brand to external audiences, you have to be a role model of the brand's values to your internal audiences but at the same time you want to have a strong personal brand. I've worked with a number of CEOs and leaders to try to overcome this challenge. It takes a bit of deep thinking to understand the overlaps between the corporate brand and the personal brand - think old school Venn-Diagram - the bit where the two circles overlap is the sweet spot for the 'CEO brand'. The CEO brand is part corporate brand and part personal brand; it's the 'uniform' the CEO needs to wear during their tenure in charge. It takes a degree of emotional intelligence and the willingness to leave your ego at home for this to be successful. If you get this right, it is incredibly powerful for both the brand and the CEO, and avoids any number of pitfalls that arise if you start thinking your personal brand is more important than the business brand. We are seeing some great examples in politics at the moment. The UK's newly elected Prime Minister, Sir Kier Starmer, has fallen into the trap of allowing his brand and behaviour to drift away from that which followers of The Labour Party might expect its leader to uphold. Free clothes and glasses for his and his wife, freebies to football and the use of an up-market flat, all whilst removing the Winter Fuel Allowance from millions of pensioners isn't a great look. Surely someone in Number 10 should be advising him on this stuff?? In America, it's even more extreme. You have Donald Trump who has rebuilt the brand of the GOP (Grand Old Party) in his own image. The brand of the party has been usurped by the brand of the leader. This might be successful in the short term, but in the longer term, if or when the Trump era passes, the party will have to rebuild its brand, maybe under a leader who understands that getting the balance right is the key to success. So if you're a CEO or Leader, or aspiring to be one, can you keep your ego in check? After all, brands last for a long time, CEOs come and go like buses!
