Meanwhile, Better Change's engagement director Robert Mabbett said the situation with financial risk checks - which are set to be piloted in the UK - "is an unfortunate one as it has resulted in a distrust between consumer and operator, with the former believing they will need to present various amounts of identification and evidence of funds to have a bet." UK gambling minister Stuart Andrew insisted at the Betting and Gaming Council's recent AGM that the checks will provide “clear and proportionate rules” and will not be “burdening customers” with information requests. I also heard from Mindway AI CEO Rasmus Kjaergaard, who explained how the company's Intensity Score Model and GameScanner tools are among those pushing the responsible gaming sector forward. The EIF's Blueprint for a Thriving European Venture Ecosystem🚀 In European finance, the European Investment Fund (EIF) stands out by ensuring the EU's SMEs have robust access to VC&PE. Joel Wajsberg, CFA, a Private Equity Mandate Officer at EIF, highlighted their dual mandate - generating risk-adjusted returns while nurturing business development, as reported by Forbes. Despite the EU's vibrant ecosystem, Wajsberg noted that institutional LPs often shy away from venture capital's high risks, favoring safer markets like the US. However, the EIF actively bridges this gap, especially in resource-scarce regions. Initiatives like the Portuguese VC initiative and EIF's engagements in the Baltics and Croatia illustrate such efforts. “We sit at the intersection between public policy and investments on the ground,” Wajsberg explained. Europe's venture capital landscape is evolving, with internal financing rounds becoming more common. The EIF’s role transcends capital infusion, embodying a vision for a thriving, diverse, and inclusive European VC ecosystem. Wajsberg acknowledges Europe's historical lag behind the US' entrepreneurial success but highlights progress. "We now have VC funds across all of the EU 27 member states," he noted. European institutional LPs often favor US-based VC funds due to historical track records and logistical ease. Wajsberg pointed out, "There's a lot of untapped talent, a lot of untapped opportunities domestically within Europe. It's our challenge to make sure that these institutional players have the ability to go into these funds." Despite comparable performance between EU and US funds, the preference for larger, single LP tickets in the US persists, highlighting the need to showcase Europe's potential. Building a VC ecosystem from scratch is one of EIF's significant tasks. Successful interventions have catalyzed local venture ecosystems, instilling optimism among young founders. “The backing of the EIF makes a real difference,” Wajsberg remarked. These efforts stabilize and invigorate private markets, fostering long-term, sustainable development. Wajsberg also emphasizes CE Europe's latent potential. "A lot of countries in Central Europe are still overlooked and have huge potential to offer," he said, noting the strategic value of these markets for VC investments. The EIF supports first-time General Partners (GPs), offering them opportunities to launch funds without substantial personal investments. SUSTAINABILITY IN MODERN FOOTBALL: BALANCING FINANCES AND SUCCESS The financial landscape of football has grown increasingly complex. Clubs face mounting pressures not only from operational challenges but also from the influx of wealthy investors and state-backed funding, pushing them to remain competitive. Regulatory bodies have responded with stricter financial oversight, sparking debates on club ownership, financial penalties, and salary regulations. The modern game now requires clubs to strike a delicate balance between financial health and on-field performance, a task that is increasingly difficult. Recognising the importance of financial sustainability, Off The Pitch has ranked Europe’s most financially stable clubs. This ranking is based on a weighted model incorporating EBITDA margin, Return-on-Assets (excluding exceptional income), and Equity ratio across 245 clubs, spanning the last three fiscal periods (2020/21, 2021/22, 2022/23). As the ticketing supplier to nearly all Norwegian top-tier clubs through our league agreement with Norsk Toppfotball/The Professional Norwegian Football League, it is amazing to see Off The Pitch’s 2023 top ten list. Not only do they place FK BODØ/GLIMT on top, but they also have MOLDE FOTBALLKLUBB in second place and Sportsklubben Brann Brann as number ten. Three out of ten, including the first and second places—what a massive proof of concept for Norwegian football! The presence of two Danish clubs and one Swedish club on this list as well clearly proves that Scandinavian football is setting the standard for financial sustainability within football. #sustainability

And deeptech requires a few additional considerations. Watch the video to see what I thought at least. But what went wrong is pretty simple. Despite two super reputable and ultra-impressive-sounding founders, I couldn't work out if I could get a return on my investment. Not because my computer/calculator decided to take early retirement—no, no, but because the founders were not transparent with the terms. Yet again - and I urge Crowdcube to advise all projects to consider this - always put the terms of the investment front and center! Be proud of them. Investors should feel it is a privilege to invest in a hot #startup. Sure - in the 'cooling-off' period that happens at the end of each #crowdfund, you get to see the official documents, which will likely detail the terms. But that's only helpful if you already knew you were going to #invest. When you're 'browsing' a #crowdfunding site, the terms should be up front and centre otherwise, like I have just done, the #investor will move on. If I missed it, which I checked again afterwards, then I'm an idiot! But in general, I hope this video helps #founders and investors alike create and review crowdfunding projects. Big love,
