UK Carbon Regulator is essential for the functioning of a net zero economy - Energy Systems Catapult (ESC) released its Operationalising a Carbon Regulator report, which aims to guide the development of a robust regulatory framework for carbon accounting in the UK. ESC states that a Carbon Regulator would be “crucial” to the standardisation of carbon accounting practices, emphasising that the implementation of a Carbon Regulator is essential for the functioning of a net zero economy by: reducing investment risks; building investor, business, and consumer confidence; and levelling the playing field for innovators. The report outlines that a UK Carbon Regulator could utilise its potential position as a first mover to promote the credibility of UK low carbon industry, while demonstrating the value of nationally coordinated carbon accounting regulations. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) published its Public Attitudes Survey for Spring 2024 today. 💚 Promisingly over half of respondents (53%) said they knew a lot, or a fair amount, about Net Zero. The over 65s were more likely to say they knew a lot, or a fair amount, about Net Zero, whereas the under 45s knew the least. 🙉 However, almost one in ten people have never heard of Net Zero. Working in energy, it can be easy to assume that everyone knows about climate change and Net Zero, but this is demonstrably not the case. 🙈 And 18% of people said they're not very, or not at all, concerned about climate change, with the trend of concern falling over time since Autumn 2021. This is despite record high temperatures, heatwaves, irregular rainfall and extreme storms seen around the world. This is likely driven by more immediate concerns felt in a turbulent few years. 📗 DESNZ spotted a promising trend - a positive correlation between knowledge about Net Zero and concern about climate change. Frequency markets are a critical element for an energy system and in de-regulated markets can make up a material chunk of the value stack for assets able to provide frequency balancing services, like battery storage but increasingly including other asset types like EV fleets. In Australia that means FCAS (Frequency Control Ancillary Services). In GB that means Dynamic Containment, Moderation and Regulation, collectively the Dx markets. Whilst there are some common elements between different energy markets there are also some really significant differences. This concept of trading across time in different energy markets may not be familiar to many of our Australia customers, but it does in fact exist in Australia. Western Australia has the Short-Term Energy Market (STEM), which allows market participants to buy and sell electricity in a day ahead forward market. Along with the Reserve Capacity Mechanism (RCM), the STEM is one of the features that makes the WEM much more “conventional” than the NEM, when compared with other power systems around the world.

Ouch. We REALLY need better community involvement in solar farms. Partial community ownership is the strongest way to get people on board. Shared ownership gives local individuals and community groups the chance to make an investment in a commercially owned solar farm. This can open new financial streams for the community and build an active body of stakeholders who can share the financial benefits across the community. End of Day UK #Energy Market Update – 05/09/2024 The UK energy markets saw a notable rebound today, ending a three-day losing streak across Power and Gas prices. Front-month UK Power closed at £74.25/MWh, up by 1.71%, while the front-month NBP Gas contract saw an increase of 1.79%, closing at 87.52p/therm. This uptick comes after a period of downward pressure, likely driven by the recent cooler weather forecasts and improved wind generation across Europe. Gas prices, which had been in decline, regained momentum following Russian President Vladimir Putin's comments, indicating that Russia remains willing to supply gas to Europe through Gazprom. However, with Europe's firm stance on reducing dependency on Russian gas, concerns are mounting over potential supply constraints post-New Year, as the transit agreement via Ukraine is set to expire. Further out on the curve, Q1 2025 Power prices increased by 1.95%, closing at £82.36/MWh, while Gas contracts for the same period rose by 2.04%, finishing at 94.67p/therm. Market sentiment remains cautious, with traders pricing in possible supply disruptions and colder-than-expected weather forecasts for early 2025. In the carbon markets, Dec24 EUAs slipped by 0.66%, closing at €66.56/tonne, reflecting a softening in demand expectations. In contrast, UKAs inched up by 0.57%, finishing at £42.01/tonne as the UK government continues to align its carbon policies with broader European targets. On the global commodities front, Brent crude surged by 1.68%, settling at $73.92/barrel, amid tightening supply expectations as OPEC+ maintains its output cuts. This rise in oil prices also provided some bullish sentiment to the broader energy complex. With geopolitical tensions still a key driver of volatility, and Europe on the cusp of transitioning away from Russian gas supplies, it remains essential for market participants to stay agile in navigating the evolving landscape. As of October 1, 2024, the UK energy market has entered a critical period as colder weather and tighter supply conditions push natural gas prices higher. The NBP Day-Ahead settled at 92.35 p/therm today, driven by falling temperatures across the UK and Europe, which are expected to remain below the five-year average for the rest of the week. With Norwegian gas exports holding steady and UKCS terminal receipts down, gas-for-power demand has surged in response to a forecasted decline in wind speeds throughout the week. Meanwhile, UK LNG send-outs have increased to 29 mcm/day, with the next LNG cargo from Qatar anticipated later this week to shore up supplies. On the forward curve, NBP front-month prices climbed modestly, with November 2024 contracts up by 0.96 p/therm to 97.36 p/therm, while December 2024 saw a rise of 0.77 p/therm to 99.36 p/therm. Curve prices continue to reflect market concerns around reduced LNG imports and the potential for increased demand as the winter period approaches, setting the stage for continued volatility. In the power market, UK Day-Ahead baseload prices fell to £71.78/MWh, a drop of £5.02 from the previous session, while peakload power rose to £88.09/MWh. The tightening of the power system, driven by reduced wind generation and increasing reliance on gas for power, suggests further upward pressure on power prices as the week progresses. Forward baseload contracts, particularly January 2025, have seen slight increases, with the contract settling at £90.15/MWh, up by £0.75. As renewable output declines and colder weather takes hold, higher demand for gas-fired power generation is likely to fuel further price hikes. European gas storage levels remain robust, standing at 94.28% as reported by AGSI, offering some cushion for the winter months. However, risks tied to LNG supply reductions and planned outages at key Norwegian gas facilities could exacerbate market tightness. These developments highlight the importance of closely monitoring supply flows as winter approaches. In the global commodities market, Brent crude futures for November 2024 eased slightly by $0.21, settling at $71.77/bbl. Market sentiment remains cautious amid global economic uncertainties, contributing to softening oil prices. On the carbon market, EUA December 2024 prices dropped by €0.77 to settle at €65.56/tonne, while UK ETS contracts also saw a slight decline, closing at £36.45/tonne. These shifts come against the backdrop of ongoing discussions on the future of emissions reductions and energy transition strategies across Europe, which could have further implications for carbon pricing in the coming months. As we move further into October, the market will be focused on how sustained cooler temperatures and reduced wind generation will impact both gas and power prices. LNG cargo arrivals and any potential disruptions to Norwegian gas flows will also be key factors shaping market dynamics in the days ahead.

UK Energy Market Update - August 15, 2024 - The UK energy market continues to navigate a complex landscape, driven by fluctuating demand, supply dynamics, and geopolitical influences. Power Prices: UK Day-Ahead (DA) Baseload prices have settled at £52.28/MWh, experiencing a notable decrease of £28.36 from the previous session. This significant drop highlights the ongoing volatility in the market, driven by varying weather conditions and supply factors. Gas Prices: The NBP Day-Ahead gas price stands at 79.00p/therm, reflecting a slight dip from earlier in the week. With Norwegian flows to the UK increasing to 81mcm/day and the anticipated arrival of LNG tankers from the United States, the UK gas market remains well-supplied. However, maintenance activities in Norway and fluctuating demand continue to impact pricing. Market Trends: Both gas and power markets have seen mixed movements recently. While gas prices are slightly down, forward contracts show slight upticks, suggesting market participants are pricing in potential supply constraints as we approach the winter months. Geopolitical Impact: The global energy landscape remains fragile, with ongoing geopolitical tensions influencing market sentiment. P415 might sound a little dry.....but it's a rule change in the GB market designed to unlock behind-the-meter flexibility by allowing more competition. Basically if you're an energy consumer and your energy supplier doesn't want to value the flex that exists in your site operations then someone else can. It's probably fair to assume that those recalcitrant energy suppliers might up their game with the spectre of increased competition looming. Certainly that's the hope. What impact could a #salarysacrifice scheme for heat pumps have? Well, plug in vehicle data gives some indication. 77% of new battery EV registrations last year came from fleet sales. As Rob Buckland of GRIDSERVE has said, these numbers "highlight the transformative effect salary sacrifice schemes are having on the take-up of electric vehicles". Salary sacrifice for heat pumps isn't a pipe dream. Marina Topouzi and her colleagues at the Environmental Change Institute (ECI), University of Oxford are actively working to map out the potential structure of such a scheme (link to their paper from last year in comments). And we work with a host of employers who are lining up to put that thinking into practice. There are of course big questions: what happens when an employee leaves, or moves house? But many of these challenges affect all financing of heat decarbonisation, not just employer-led solutions. There's a big, easy win here for the next government in a climate where public cash for more direct market incentives will be limited. And if the EV market is anything to go by, the impact could be transformative.

We had such a great time yesterday at the panel event hosted by #Metris in partnerships with #octopus, mingling with industry leaders and debating opportunities, challenges and solutions to scale up the adoption of solar energy in the UK for commercial properties. Justine O'Mahony FCCA Mila Bessmann Yoshihito Nozoe Key take out for the panel and discussions were: ☀ Solar panels improve the bottom line for commercial property landlords but many of them are not considering generating income from solar assets. 🏬 Some of the barriers for large adoption is the complication leasehold agreement that are in place for some buildings which creates a disconnect between landlords and tenants (ie the ones who invests in solar installations may not be the ones reaping the benefits) With utility prices at current levels investors need to be comfortable with 10-15+ year payback periods in order to incentivize landlords and tenants ➡ Meeting ESG goals are in the mind of large organisations, however most are still at the beginning of the journey with a focus on short term goals and gains. 👨‍👨‍👦 Our panel noted that prices for solar are near bottom now due to fierce competition by manufacturers but leads them to predict they may go up again in the near future. 🏦The PPA market is evolving, and new models of solar funding are developing to cater for commercial customers ready to maximise the benefits of producing their own solar energy A lot of vivid discussions also took place amongst participants where we met great people.
