A fascinating opener to our Criticaleye CPO Forum, Driving Workforce Transformation, in association with Accenture UK & Ireland and Reward Gateway Edenred. My conversation with Andy Young was a great set up for the rest of the Forum. There wasn’t enough time and we could have gone on, but here are some of the themes we covered and specific points made: ·      The strategic imperative of the CPO – the elevated role of the CPO ·      10% of large companies have a reinvention mindset to transform their whole business… ·      … and a reinvention mindset is a shift from “is this too much change?” to “we’re all about change”. ·      89% of CEOs believe the CPO is essential to transformation and sustainable profitable growth… ·      …but only half are delivering the conditions for success ·      Success of reinventors is down to connecting technology and people. ·      Exceptional CPOs are business leaders who understand how to put talent behind growth and transformation.  ·      CPOs are only successful with strong team and peer relationships. ·      Change leadership is a team sport. The CEO is the captain, the CPO is the First Officer ·      We discussed the ins and outs of and relevance of skills-based organisations in driving sustainable growth… ·      We picked up on Simon Holland’s comment 7 months ago on how GenAI will provide the most significant change to work since the industrial revolution. 7 months ago, 4% of Accenture’s clients had scaled generative AI in production – that’s now 25%. ·      Main opportunity for CPOs is to help their organisation to embrace AI in a human-led approach – that means working with the CDO and CIO to help the business responsibly use AI and navigate workforce change ·      AI, etc is very exciting, but CPOs still need to run the people function – don’t lose sight of the knitting Andy then left us with a few thoughts: ·      As a CPO, embrace your role in transformation – it’s an opportunity to unlock human potential ·      As a CPO you have influence – more than just a seat at the top table ·      To support transformation, you need a dynamic plan and the insights to guide the business on where to automate, where to augment skilled work and where to prioritise human skills and ingenuity alongside technology. ·      Fourth, this elevated CPO role is hard work - your health and your team’s health and growth really matter. As a pre-seed startup in the UK, my experience mirrors this new strong data. I was lucky enough to find some fantastic first round investors who were willing to go on a capital-intensive journey to innovate, but an astonishingly few VCs in the UK - and the EU - were excited to take outsized risks for our outsized returns. Instead, many were looking for revenue at pre-seed on a tech-centric build: low risk, medium reward. (There were of course other reasons that some people passed, some excellent concerns & feedback, and some stellar funds in the UK, but I am 90% sure that my round as a whole would have been much easier in the USA.) Given my experience, the fact that I'm a US citizen as well, and the experience of nearly every other founder, I strongly predict that my next raise will be skewed to the USA. I will definitely be putting more energy there in the beginning. The UK has amazing SEIS and EIS, which moves money from the wealthy individuals into innovation, but the industry as a whole isn't there yet. (And those of you with SEIS and EIS with us, don't worry - if I do a flip, I'll do it correctly to protect you!)

State support for innovation is essential for start ups to gain traction in funding, by ensuring investor confidence is maintained. The incoming changes the budget narrative is signalling won’t help address the investment attractiveness, and there are brilliant scaling businesses up and down the country that have been struggling throughout 2024 to secure the growth capital needed - all supporting the government’s net zero agenda. More companies are bootstrapping to get by with tech solutions enabling change until they can get funding in place, creating a challenging operating context. Well worth listening to, IMO energy security for UK is the most pressing issue, we are currently importing between 10 and 20% of our electricity demand, and importing gas. We have the resources and capability to produce all our own energy needs today and transition to zero carbon in future. we need politicians and civil servants to listen to Jenny Stanning, and OEUK LIMITED and urgently act.

My first Chair role was for the exceptional UK based energy data business Racanaa Energy, and it has been an incredible Mission. From significant restructurings up and down the organisation, and crafting with the Executive strategies to enter new markets, it has been a challenging, yet fascinating and certainly a rewarding assignment over the last near four years.   In particular, two years ago we began a structured campaign to enter Middle Eastern markets. I am delighted to announce on behalf of the company that we have signed the first of a series of 7-figure contracts, togther with a Master Services Agreement of comparable value. So far, we serve the sectors of real-estate, storage, logistics, hospitality, communal living spaces, catering (including fast food brands and ghost kitchens) and retail banking. We today therefore provide a proven range of cutting-edge energy intelligence services across any use case.   Additionally, as we can identify each individual asset that consumers power, we can also keep an eye on its health, and this business continuity assurance sees us more and more being used as a risk management tool that can generate up to a 25% saving in energy bills within just a few months. In the Middle East, this saving figure rises to in excess of 40%.   Active in four countries today, we are also at the final stages of accreditation as a recognised "Energy Services Company" by a government agency in one Middle Eastern country, and in another Middle Eastern country we are already deployed in government operations.   As we enter the UK market, it is wonderful to be able leverage overseas successes; for example, alongside the Middle East, we are now deployed across the whole of North India’s McDonalds franchise of 200 branches, and are rolling out across a vast retail banking network across all India.   With the potential to aggressively manage down energy costs to several times the cost of buying our technology, blended with the business continuity assurance that we can provide, customers globally are seeing that the digital visibility that our data can offer is a much richer strategic opportunity beyond simplistic BI from expensive BMS systems and inaccurate smart meters.   Data will be the answer to the world’s energy usage being optimised, and I believe Racanaa will be the solution that sets the bar the highest.   My congratulations to my fellow Board members, the tireless executives, and most of all, the operations and data teams for the phenomenal work efforts to get these over the line.
