Excellent news today that the government has confirmed the introduction of what is known as the Independent Film Tax Credit (its proper name is "enhanced audiovisual expenditure credit for low-budget films"). This was proposed by the previous government but the election prevented its confirmation. It applies to British films with budgets of less than £15 million and is thus a massive boon to documentaries - most of which are made for less than 5% of that. It will make it easier to fund independent documentaries aimed for a cinema release. But there is now a new battle to fight. When the original tax credit was introduced in 2004, the idea was that "The relief will go direct to the film-maker and not to any third party." (I've looked it up in the 2004 Budget Report in the National Archives -paragraph 3.115 if you are interested). The idea was to help create sustainable British production companies. For many in the independent documentary sector this has not happened as the big American platforms, broadcasters and studios have forced UK producers to put the whole of the benefit of the tax credit into the individual film they are helping to fund, leaving nothing for the filmmaker to help create a sustainable business. That's the next battle.

An insight into writing the script in post... 🕯 I need to preface this, not every film is made this way, pre-production and scripting is so important and highly recommended, but not always budgeted for. Anyway.... Often working a story based films, we are contenting with a few things. Maybe we only have two hours to interview and shoot b-roll. That might be budgetary or it might be availability. Either way, because of my experience - note the grey hair, this can be approached with two strategies. Firstly I will ask the questions of what the video needs to say, who is the protagonist, what was their obstacle and how did they overcome. Secondly by creating a rapport with the people I am talking to, I normally do this during setup, within a short space of time they are giving me all the building blocks I need. Now, this is probably an ADHD thing, but, as they are talking I am editing in my head and I can see the gaps at the time of filming to ask follow up questions or make a shot list b-roll. That, was the easy bit, now we have to take all of that and write the script with the material we have. This is a skill set I feel goes way undervalued, an editor builds a story using editing software. Knowledge of said software without the storytelling can make something very pretty, but not particularly compelling.
