What we're trying to do: - Build our own Agile (as in: ability to react quickly to unexpected changes) Ways of Working based on psychological safety, alignment of purpose and self-organising. - In-source the entire technology function of the bank. - Hire multiple engineers for each of these roles. - Build technology chapters and stable cross-functional teams in several value streams. - We all need to be attached to one of the offices (https://lnkd.in/eDXygb9u) but we'll be remote-first for a while (see: self-organising). - Navigate through a desert to find the oasis (my own metaphor). There is 10 years of technical and process debt to repay. It's going to take a while. It won't be easy. It will hopefully be very rewarding.

I find this really interesting, the Bank of England doesn't think commercial banks will innovate quickly enough especially in the retail payments space. So the central bank believes they need to be the driver of the innovation. It subtly suggest this is partly because of market dominance. We see the likes of Starling, revolut gaining traction in the retail space but payments is a whole different game and is currently imbedded with a small few who have no incentive to change the status quo. Paypal et al have broken in but aren't as imbedded and the scale the banks have dwarfs theirs. Like to see how BoE plans to push this and how far into innovation will they go (and potentially then share?). Does this include crypto, blockchain and the like? Commercial Banks won't like that as it takes the middle person out! Also the likes of Apple who are looking into this space, will we see an apple bank in the future? Today marks an important milestone for my team at the FCA. We have published a consultation paper on proposals to enhance how we collect data for our National Storage Mechanism (NSM). This will enable us to implement better data quality controls, making it easier for users to find information within the NSM. The Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is a key aspect of this proposal, as it is an extremely important piece of data necessary for identifying organisations in financial markets. Just had a call from 'Sara' who works for a company who provide repair services for household products. Now I do actually have a contact with the company she mentioned so was willing to hear her out... 'Sara' : Nothing changing in my contract but they're updating their contact centre number so just need me to confirm my bank sort code.... me : ✋️I'm not giving you my bank account details🤨 'Sara' : no don't worry I'm not asking for your card number or security code, just your account details because I need that because we're changing our contact number. me: 🤦🏼‍♀️don't be ridiculous why would you need my bank details because you're changing your contact centre number?!?!?! 'Sara' then hung up on me. Don't be afraid to say no to people calling and asking for your details. Legitimate businesses don't do this. Who knows what her end game was but I wasn't in the mood to play.😠 Your money, your bank details and your personal information are yours, always take 5 and think about what you're being asked. Personal opinion 👀 Removal of compressed working Today marks the day that my employer mandates that I relinquish my compressed working pattern and move back to a standard 5 day week. I’ve loved having a non-working day to spend with my little boy, adventuring and (let’s be honest) spending less money on childcare. I’ll miss spending time with him but it has been TOUGH fitting a full time job into 4 days and on my “day off” being solely responsible for an energetic and opinionated toddler. So I’ll spend extra money on childcare, but I’ll also reduce my weekly workload by 20%. Will my employer see the benefit of me working over 5 days? I doubt it, because I’m taking every minute of that extra time to spend on myself. I’ll take lunch breaks to get fresh air, I’ll finish work on time and get some exercise before nursery pick up. I expect I’ll be more energised and productive during my working hours as a result, sure, but mostly I’m planning to be selfish with my newly freed up time! I’m lucky to be working for a manager who supports me too. Please keep supporting working mums! And for anybody who continues to be both an employee and a parent in their working weeks, absolute kudos because it is exhausting!
