DevOps contractors that hold an NV1 clearance are typically on higher rates. It makes sense. Getting the clearance costs an arm an a leg. Some people are lucky enough for companies to pay but if they have to take out of their own pockets - it for sure is an expense. Something to consider when looking for a new contract... if you're joining a company that doesn't need security clearance the rate on offer may be $50-$100 less give or take. It's good to have flexibility or at least show awareness of how the market is if you choose to broaden your horizons when interviewing. Being paid $1300 whilst working for a high profile, NV1 cleared only business doesn't mean it's the norm or that all positions should be paying that. #devops #contract #rates

Hot off the press... it sounds like the AWS CodeCommit service is being 'de-prioritised'. What does this mean? Likely a date in the future when customers will need to migrate their code repositories to an alternative solution. Once of the great things about CodeCommit was its private nature. One of my beefs with terraform is it’s trying so hard to be flat. Some of us want very dynamic scripts. But when you create a k8s cluster, form the kubexonfig file, then need to use the kubexonfig file to load in the rest of the parts like ingress, having a depends_on would be nice for providers. I did cheat a little and abuse the variable system to force the provider to wait, but then you run into what about a workspace that will have kubernetes set to false and get a zero count for your k8s module? Then it gets angry because the module output isn’t there. I still like Chef. Chef let me do what I want when I want. Just was bad on creating the underlying infrastructure but great at configuring it once it was up. *shrug* #terraform #kubernetes #k8s #eks #automation #burgerkingmodel

This article describes how AWS evolved its block storage system (EBS). It's a brilliant, high-level description of the challenges that AWS faced. I was particularly impressed with how they tackled the problem using multiple teams, each specializing in one part of EBS. Often such problems are relegated as "hardware" problems and teams try to speed up their data access patterns instead.
