📣 Today marks the second annual #EndDigitalPovertyDay, an initiative proudly launched by the Digital Poverty Alliance (DPA) in 2023 to drive collective action and accelerate efforts to eliminate digital poverty across the UK. Since its inception, this day has become a focal point for raising awareness and mobilising communities to close the #digitaldivide, which continues to impact millions. We extend our thanks to our partners, collaborators, and the public for stepping up in the lead-up to today and throughout this important day of action. We are pleased to announce the launch of our expanded Tech4Youth programme in #Solway today! Supported by the Macquarie Group Foundation and Voneus, this initiative provides young people with essential technology such as laptops, free broadband access, and digital literacy workshops. This expansion represents a critical step in ensuring young people have the tools and skills needed for their education and future success. 🌍 Ending digital poverty 🌍   Today marks the second annual "End Digital Poverty Day", an initiative led by the Digital Poverty Alliance (DPA) to address digital exclusion across the UK. In light of this, our colleague Safeera Ahmed has written an article to demonstrate the importance of closing the digital access gap for all communities.   🚀 As digital health technologies and online services accelerate, many are left behind due to digital exclusion—a challenge that became even more pronounced during the COVID-19 pandemic. With an estimated 13-19 million people in the UK experiencing some form of digital exclusion, it's crucial to address this disparity.   🌐 For the NHS and other public services, improving digital access isn't just about technology; it's about ensuring equitable, accessible, and inclusive care. Thrilled to unveil the sixth instalment of our Impact Series at Open Data Manchester!Our latest case study highlights our collaboration with Your Dsposal to develop Open3R, an open data standard for household waste recycling centres (HWRCs). ♻ The Challenge: With stalling recycling rates and public confusion, we needed to standardise how local authorities share information about recycling services.  🤝 Our Approach: Over 8 months, we: • Conducted extensive desk research • Facilitated 9 stakeholder workshops • Analysed data flows between authorities and the public • Developed a prototype data standard  💡 Key Outcomes: • Creation of Open3R, an open data standard for HWRCs • Development of a prototype dataset • Establishment of a prescriptive data set for local authorities • Generation of interest from global tech institutions like OpenStreetMap and Microsoft Bing Maps 🚀  The Impact: Open3R has the potential to significantly improve public access to recycling information across the UK.As Sophie Walker, COO of Your Dsposal, noted: "Better waste data can lead to improved resource efficiency which in turn can help reduce our impact on the environment and meet our carbon budgets." Interchange Opinion: Creating a public realm for all through co-cultivation By Antoneta Horbury, director of policy and technical affairs, CIHT Co-cultivation — the process of meaningful engagement and representation from the very outset of a project — results in a shared understanding of the issues faced from both the user and the designer perspective and is key to making spaces and services more accessible for all, says Antoneta Horbury, CIHT’s director of policy and technical affairs. CIHT’S recently published report, Creating a Public Realm for All (https://lnkd.in/efGhTVsz) helps transport professionals identify challenges and provides prompts to think about when designing public spaces, so they work for everyone. Public spaces can present a number of everyday challenges for users, especially disabled people (with physical, sensory, cognitive, or intellectual impairments or differences, which may not be readily apparent), people with temporary conditions such as pregnancy or sports injuries, older people, people travelling with young children, or those carrying luggage. Putting user experience first and thinking about the different ways in which the space is used can help shine a light on these issues. Making spaces and services more accessible benefits everyone and results in greater economic benefits realised from greater use. Whilst the report is primarily aimed at local authorities, its messaging should be applied across the entire transportation sector. The people best placed to know whether a space or service is actually accessible are the people for whom it currently presents a barrier. As such, it is vital that design and improvement teams engage with as many representative groups and potential users as possible from the outset of any project working to change spaces and services. Co-cultivation, defined as meaningful engagement and representation from the very outset of a project, sustained throughout the construction, operation, monitoring and evaluation phases, can serve as a useful principle to make this a reality. Unlike traditional forms of consultation which take place only near the end of a project, once the most important decisions have been agreed, co-cultivation helps to bring about a shared sense of the issues facing both the designers and the users. This promotes a sense of collaboration, which proves more productive than foisting unsuitable solutions onto stakeholders at the end of the project or implementing more accessible designs retrospectively (often at a high economic and social cost).
