The critical importance of the cement industry for the UK has been a cornerstone of the Carbon Capture and Storage Association conference this year and repeated again by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero chief scientific officer today. Through the Morecambe Net Zero (MNZ) partnership with the Peak Cluster we will decarbonise over 40% of the UK’s cement and lime production providing net zero construction solutions at home, and abroad via exports, securing jobs and creating growth.

An excellent Oped based on the views of real individuals by GMB Union, Brindex and Serica Energy plc about what the oil and gas industry contributes to the UK, why we should preserve it and what will happen if the UK government persists in its dogmatic pursuit of shutting it down at all costs. The energy transition is a journey and the social and economic costs have to be considered and balacanced alongside the environment. It’s not or, it’s and. This is not a model based on a spreadsheet. Let’s hope the Chancellor is listening. Once it starts shutting down it can’t be switched on again and when our lights go out alongside the jobs it’s too late. Labour please listen.

Excited to finally share this! A quantitative view on how the UK energy supply chain needs to scale to meet the demands across offshore wind, hydrogen, CCS and oil & gas. Key Findings 👇 ➡️ The oil and gas sector’s supply chain possesses between 60 to 80% of the capabilities required to develop the UK’s low carbon energies. ➡️Targeted investment is vital to capture the potential of an estimated £150 billion opportunity. ➡️Strategic action is needed to help supply chain companies seize the potential of a projected 4% yearly increase in spend (real terms) across offshore and onshore activity. ➡️Forecasts indicate this major growth phase will occur across the UK’s floating wind farms, new hydrogen schemes and carbon capture and storage projects from 2023 to 2040. ➡️The successful delivery of these emerging low carbon energies will hinge on the existing oil and gas supply chain delivering into them. ️ ⚡ It’s time to make heat - hot! ⚡ That’s the takeaway for me from the The Association for Decentralised Energy’s #DECONF24    Lots of inspirational, insightful and thought-provoking speeches – couldn’t expect less from the event hosted by Caroline Bragg.  💡 Heat Networks could be the source of low cost, low carbon heat (Tamsin Lishman). They allow to capture and utilise energy which would otherwise be wasted (Beata Blachut).  💡 Waste heat is being produced by the industry (including data centres, sewage, the tube), and capturing it could solve a huge part of heat decarbonisation challenge for cities. To enable that on national scale - the investment is required in heat transmission infrastructure to connect the demand with the source. Thermal energy storage systems could help (Exergy3 Limited), and biomethane has a role to play too.    💡 Greg Jackson talked about going electric in a smart, decentralised way, and the need for Price signals in order to enable Smart systems. Consumer demand has a huge part to play in reducing electricity cost – provided that demand flexibility is enabled.  ❓ How do we solve a multi-faceted problem of Energy Transition, from Private sector perspective?   ✅ Talk in One Room about One Energy System (thank you - Beata Blachut)  ✅ Raise awareness about the true cost of clean electricity and heat   ✅ Find a “prettier” name than “Heat Networks” (suggestion from John Gummer, Rt Hon The Lord Deben himself)  And from what I can tell – ENGIE’s teddy bear freebie is a step towards (making my kids happier) making the image of “Heat” more appealing 😊

“Support British Industry. Support our Offshore Energy Sector. Support us” Today, I had the privilege of presenting evidence at the House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee on Methane on behalf of Offshore Energies UK. When I was asked what more can policy makers do to support the rapid reduction in UK methane emissions and our journey to net zero, for me the answer is simple: Support our homegrown energy sector. Support our highly skilled people. Support our world class supply chain. Support our sectors value in the UK economy. Support our efforts to meet our emission reduction targets. We recognise that there is more to do. We must deliver. But our sector is in action delivering on clear commitments to reduce methane and wider green house gas emissions. With our homegrown offshore energy sector in action to deliver on our climate goals, there are no prizes for simply importing our energy from overseas which would have a detrimental impact to everyone. The select committee were clearly well informed, challenging, curious and wanting to deliver recommendations that will make a difference. I was joined by Rebecca Tremain who is Clean Air Task Force’s Director of UK Government Affairs. Her thoughtful and challenging evidence left me with food for thought and focus areas where our sector can do more. This committee is undertaking important work, and it is important that that our sector provide evidence of our commitment to a net zero future and are held to account to delivering on those commitments.

So this is it - the day of the UK General election. An important day for the UK and for the people in our sector across the country. We’ve set out what we think is important in our industry manifesto, which calls on all parties and candidates to choose a homegrown energy transition and back our sector. The opportunities in a homegrown energy transition are inspiring. Delivering economic growth, skilled jobs, energy security all while delivering our climate goals. We will only achieve this with supportive Government policy. Policy that makes the most of our existing industries, builds on our strengths, and ensures that the UK is the place globally for energy investment. So, when you cast your vote today, think hard about the people whose future will be shaped by our next government. Let’s hold all candidates to support UK industry and our sector. It was great to hear from Baringa at Offshore Energies UK last week about the state’s role in the GB energy market. The report published back in July is more relevant now than ever, with the rollout of GB Energy. Many of us are still waiting to see how GBE will take shape, and this is definitely something I am watching closely (shout out to Xtra Energy Xodus). The insights shared by Baringa were compelling, especially the four potential roles they envision the state playing in driving the energy transition: 1. Planner: Acting as a system architect, the state can map out where to place power stations and grid infrastructure, ensuring we build in the right places and providing much-needed clarity to the supply chain. 2. Developer: By stepping in as a pre-developer, the state could fast-track site preparation, planning consents, and grid connections, packaging large-scale energy assets for the private sector to invest in and develop. 3. Investor: The state can co-invest in less mature technologies like hydrogen or CCUS, helping to commercialise these innovations and take equity stakes to de-risk projects that the private sector might not take on alone. 4. Enabler: Reforming regulations and coordinating procurement processes, the state could help speed up energy projects and foster innovation, aligning energy policies with broader economic growth. I feel like the industry is waiting with bated breath to see how the government will act as a developer. However, I don’t think the industry wants the government interfering with established projects, businesses in this space know what they’re doing. The real opportunity for the government is to define, escalate, and accelerate the deployment of the right technologies in the right places. The CCUS funding is a great start, but we need to make all of this commercially viable. We won’t reach net zero unless it’s profitable, and if I were in charge, I’d focus on how to make the net zero world a real thriving business. Scottish Chambers of Commerce has welcomed Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s meeting today with First Minister John Swinney and called for a similar pro-active partnership with Scottish businesses. SCC Chief Executive Dr Liz Cameron CBE said: “Scotland faces many challenges, not least in our oil and gas sector as we transition to Net Zero and we urgently need detailed plans and action to protect and invest in the thousands of jobs that rely on a thriving North East economy. “That means the new UK government working together with Holyrood to deliver policies and support the business and energy sector. “Today’s meeting is a positive step in that direction and one we welcome.” In a 15-point action plan released prior to the General Election, The SCC called for a Joint Economic Growth Board to be established within the first 100 days of government to oversee an ambitious programme of pro-enterprise, pro-growth policies. Dr Cameron said: “As Scotland’s leading business organisation with 12,000 members we want a seat at that table to ensure our voice is heard and our priorities recognised. Labour has said economic growth is at the heart of its drive to create prosperity and that can’t be done without working closely with the business community to help deliver the most pro-growth policies to turbo-charge investment, innovation, and job creation.” The SCC has prioritised four key areas for the new Labour government: 💠 Unleashing business growth by committing to no new UK taxes or levies on business for the lifetime of the next Parliament; 💠Accelerating investment by introducing a green industrial strategy with incentives and commit to future exploration and investment allowances for the oil & gas sector; 💠Boosting global trade by increasing the number of SMEs exporting and improve access to the EU – the UK’s largest trading partner; 💠Prioritising people & talent by developing a skilled migration strategy which aligns with economic need and support all types of jobseekers into the workforce. Dr Cameron continued: “Our action plan was created by business for business and will not only protect jobs but provide a platform for investment and innovation. There is no doubt the country succeeds when business succeeds. “We are encouraged that in the first few days of government, we have had a positive meeting between the new PM Sir Keir Starmer and FM John Swinney as well as the new Secretary of State for Scotland Ian Murray MP’s pledge to govern for the whole of the country and deliver economic growth and opportunity for every corner of the four nations. Resetting the relationship between Westminster and Holyrood can only benefit voters and businesses across Scotland. “We hope our early optimism regarding a more collaborative approach is rewarded with urgent action and a pro-active partnership with business to deliver much needed jobs and more wealth into everyone’s pockets. Confidence in our new government will depend on that.”

To say we’ve been busy dealing with Scope 3 emission queries the last few weeks is an understatement! We’ve all known that Scope 3 reporting has been coming for quite a while, and we still don’t know all the implications of this decision, but we do know that ALL companies should now have a good understanding of their full emissions for past and present operations, and have some forecasting for future plans too. It’s not a quick and easy thing to do, so our advice continues to be for ALL companies - small / big / listed / private backed - to start getting to grips with their emissions asap.
