£13 billion….. That’s the estimated loss in economic value resulting from the Government’s planned changes to the North Sea fiscal regime; an eye-watering amount that should prompt careful consideration ahead of next month’s budget. Should the planned policy remain in place, there may be some short-term tax benefits, but oil and gas producers will inevitably reassess their long-term capital investment. While these changes will certainly pose challenges for oil and gas producers, as a midstream operator responsible for delivering a homegrown supply of gas to keep homes warm and power businesses, they could have a notable effect on the critical gas infrastructure that supports UK energy security. Over the decades, the North Sea has contributed tens of billions of pounds to the UK economy, but the proposed policy change risks undermining the sector’s ability to drive economic growth and deliver the energy transition. Instead of jeopardizing the sector that has contributed for over 50 years, we encourage collaboration to develop an integrated energy system that protects supply, supports jobs, and fosters economic growth alongside decarbonization. The UK government is launching a publicly owned National Energy System Operator (NESO) on October 1, 2024, to oversee the strategic planning of the nation's electricity and gas systems. NESO aims to enhance energy security, reduce long-term costs, and accelerate the transition to clean energy by 2030. It will integrate various energy infrastructures under one body, ensuring coordination for renewable projects, decarbonization. This initiative follows the acquisition of the Electricity System Operator from National Grid. Some of the key NESO works during the next couple of years will be to publish: 1.
