Can startups bring in real revenue from drones — or are they still just a piece of tech that *might* be commercially viable in the future? --- This week, an NHS pilot programme using drones to carry blood samples between two London-based hospitals kicked off. It's the first time aerial delivery has been trialled in the UK’s capital. The pilot is a partnership between UK software startup Apian and US drone delivery startup Wing, a subsidiary of Alphabet and a graduate of its “moonshot factory”. Apian’s software — which connects the drones to healthcare providers and handles orders, scheduling and live-tracking — has already been used in other regions. The drones will each be controlled by a single pilot, but in the future Apian hopes regulators will approve multi-drone piloting, where a single operator controls multiple aircraft with the help of autonomous technology. The companies say drone delivery will reduce a journey which can take up to half an hour by road to just a couple of minutes, meaning quicker decisions can be made in determining whether patients are safe to undergo surgery.  The news comes following years of promising moves for drone startups in Europe — from delivering everyday items to developing defence tech applications — but few examples of chunky commercial deals to roll out the tech at scale. “Drones have been overestimated in the short term, but underestimated in the long term,” says Alexander Trewby, CEO and cofounder of Apian — adding that infrastructure limitations in urban areas mean there’s big potential. “Cities like London face a unique challenge: built vertically but relying on 2D roads, they’re choked by polluting congestion,” he tells Sifted. “Apian’s ambition is to create an autonomous delivery network operating at NHS scale, moving physical items as productively as the internet moves information.” But these companies are still at the mercy of the regulators, who remain cagey about letting autonomous technology — which would allow startups to operate at scale — take to the skies. https://lnkd.in/eddyCdbY

"Is there a fast way to sell to the NHS as an early stage HealthTech Startup?" A founder asked me this sincerely yesterday. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐫: Generally No. Let us review the position of this founders startup: 1. First version of MVP ready. 2. Compliance almost done (DTAC). 3. No current evidence yet (Pilot in 2-3 months hopefully). 4. Looking to sell to primary care/ generate leads ASAP. Which to be fair, is where many founders find themselves. ______________________________ There are 4 main factors why I say no. 1. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐇𝐒 𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝. - There isn't a single unified way to reach out to all 1250 Primary Care Networks (PCN) and the 42 integrated care boards in the UK. - If selling to GP clinics, there are 6311 clinics that you will have to approach one by one if not going through the ICB and PCN level. 2. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐇𝐒 𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐮𝐧𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 (𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐂𝐁 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥) - First off, the NHS is cash strapped. Meaning it will need significant proof to justify buying any new solutions. - A lot of software solutions are often bought in bulk (EHRs, Video Communication) at the ICB level and distributed. - But those often are from established companies with substantial experience and evidence. (Note, evidence in this case does not mean just published clinical studies in peer reviewed journals. But real world case applications) 3. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐇𝐒 𝐢𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠. - Even if a procurement decision is agreed upon at the board level, it still takes a while for procurement to complete. - The shared experience points towards a sales cycle of approx 6-12 months at the higher levels. 4. 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭. - Established channels for HealthTech companies to scale such as the NHS Innovation Accelerator takes time for its benefits to be shown. - Joining national procurement frameworks like the G-cloud or Dynamic Purchasing Systems takes time and vetting as well. (Same for applying for any tender) _________________________________ Does this mean one should abandon all hope selling to the NHS? Certainly not. But it does tell founders to: 1. Prepare for the long run. 2. Prioritise developing evidence for your solutions. 3. Develop great assets that communicate your product's value proposition. Lead generation follows a great product with a track record. Overnight successes rarely happen overnight. Science-fiction is inherently speculative. Author George #Orwell of ‘#1984’ predicted concepts such as doublethink, little earbuds and society’s obsession with the black mirror screens that dominate our lives — and according to the BBC, novelist and short story author JG Ballard, of “High-Rise” and “Crash” fame, has predicted the current tool and cultural fixation of #GenerativeAI in the modern society — only he didn’t just speculate them within a story, he is actually one of the first use-cases of a generative AI used in a creative context — Ballard was so fascinated with the growing technological advancement of computers that he used one to compose poems, essentially the precursor to what we have now with ChatGPT. Today, the debate about the creative use of generative AI and its value on creative industries is an extremely fraught and controversial topic, but if controlled in a space that doesn’t replace human labor or try to equate itself to traditional art forms, it is interesting to see what computers can do and how they are creatively limited in comparison. Ballard’s two poems, The Yellow Back Novels and Machine Gun City are generated, and both include notes on how Ballard achieved producing them. Regardless of quality (Ballard himself probably wouldn’t describe these two poems as his best work), it is interesting to see primitive versions of the technology that we utilize on the daily today, and how these moral conversations that concern them would continuously evolve.

AI WILL SAVE US, IF IT DOESNT KILL US Some are sounding alarm bells about the surge in emissions from the data centers crunching AI calls and they should be, because the risk is very very real. IMHO the sky doesn’t have to be falling. I see this reality as a tremendous opportunity to innovate both around compute efficiency and integration of VPPs and data centers. I anticipate there will be billions more invested to solve this processing challenge. The data center is a world that Raj Kapoor and i know from our years in general tech and I suspect that the founders in this space will also come from general tech. We at Climactic believe that the net impact of AI on #climatechange will be significantly positive. AI will be in everything and will be a major driver of efficiency in almost every business process. 🚀 Proving Your Concept Before Building the Platform When launching a new tech product, it's crucial to validate your idea before investing in platform development. I recently advised an early-stage ed-tech firm on this. The founder was eager to start building, but I stressed the importance of proving key hypotheses first: 1. User Engagement: Will users engage with and benefit from the content? 2. Willingness to Pay: Are users ready to pay for this value? Alternative Approach: Create a closed Facebook or WhatsApp group. Invite users to join by paying for access to your content. This simple method can validate your concept without a fully developed platform. Also focused on the following metrics to measure the success - 1. Engagement Rate: Track active participation and content consumption within the group. 2. Conversion Rate: Measure the percentage of invited users who join and pay for the group. 3. Retention Rate: Monitor how many users stay engaged over a period of time. 4. Feedback Quality: Collect and analyze user feedback to improve your content and approach. Day #4 of observations from attending Home Care 100 this month: There is a cambrian explosion of "AI scribe for OASIS docs in <15 min" startups currently underway in Home Health. A new one of these is launching every few months. I'm certain we'll see 2x AI scribe vendors at the next HC100 in January. And so, I listened for the overall positioning of these products by the vendor and buyer at Home Care 100. It sounded like this: HH CEO: “I need a solution to lower the caregiver burden of clinical documentation” HH Vendor: “I offer AI to reduce the burden of clinical documentation” This may sound like a "checkmate" match between what the CEO is saying, and what the vendor is offering. But it isn't. The CEO actually has a business model problem. They cannot afford to sufficiently pay for the time it takes for caregivers to complete clinical documentation. And so, they are stuck looking for solutions that minimize the cost of personal time on documentation that caregivers have to absorb. Solutions that offer AI and the promise of driving down this cost down for the caregiver are the start, but not the endgame. If I were not building Arya, and wanted to build a standout documentation product, I would build an "AI-powered clinical documentation agency", not an AI scribe. Here's what this AI-powered documentation agency would sound like: 1. We eliminate 90% of all clinical documentation at your company. We do it at 1/10th the cost of a traditional outsourced documentation shop 2. We do this by a human-in-the-loop AI solution, that allows our human documenters to work 10x faster than DIY 3. Under the hood, we integrate with *all* the best AI out there (incl. ChatGPT) in a SOC2+ HIPAA guaranteed environment. We decide the best AI+human workflow to use for each documentation on the fly. Regardless, you always pay a flat rate, and we absorb the risk or AI vs human effort 4. Your caregivers approve each human-in-the-loop documentation. We don't publish anything to the EHR till it's approved 5. We guarantee a <1% error/ change rate on our documentation from caregivers, or we offer some money back I did some back of the napkin math to see what the economics of an such an agency might look like. With the current math, the caregiver is still absorbing upwards of $10 worth of time per OASIS documentation. If an AI-powered agency drove this cost down to the single digits per doc, might HH agencies be able to work this into their financial model and take this off the caregiver's plate entirely? The quality of output depends on the quality of the question. In a #healthcare context, you can’t control what questions are asked, even if instructions are for narrow use. Below is why, for my start up, we have not released the chatbot function. #Womenshealth already has too much #misinformation and we cannot be the source of even more.

There’s been speculation we’re approaching a trough of disillusionment for generative AI. That seems pessimistic. Here’s why: - There ARE amazingly helpful use cases - Adoption HAS been rapid - There’s ALWAYS a period of time spent figuring out the application layer for technology, this time is no different - Teams are already figuring out how generative AI can be helpful, interesting, and exciting In my own life my family writes songs for our birthdays with Suno. We create books that show new worlds with Firefly. Both produce amazing moments that wouldn’t happen otherwise. I run many things (including this post) through ChatGPT. Generative AI makes it easier to analyze external data, videos, and reports. Mostly, I ignore what it says, but sometimes it’s really helpful. Perplexity is a starting point for research into topics and a source for recipes while Gemini makes exploring interviews faster and more interesting. Marvin, Great Question, and UserTesting are all working on this too. I’m also excited to try new tools from Apple, Every Inc., and others. There are also so many new things to come from agents. To understand what's happening, we analyzed data about how designers and developers are building and improving products that include generative AI. The blog in the comments covers the moment we’re in and the path forward for teams. The conclusion: “Will AI live up to the hype? Not all technologies—even the most hyped ones—are truly transformative, at least not in the ways we might predict. The ones that are have something in common: teams who see the potential and are willing to experiment until they get it right. This kind of work is underappreciated, and it often requires pushing against disillusionment, embracing failure, and knowing when to put your head down and keep building. Talking with founders who are growing and scaling their businesses is one of my favorite things to do. In the past four or so months I've led sessions on growth marketing at accelerators and workshops for Hatch Enterprise UK and FemTech Lab, speaking to founders about the biggest challenges they're facing and where the startup world is going. Here are some recurring themes: 1. the hype around automation and AI far outstrips the reality, leaving founders and teams befuddled about the realistic value of AI as it can be implemented now across organizations and teams in a time and cost efficient manner; 2. finding great startup Go to Market people, and taking strategic GTM action, are huge challenges for businesses that see early product/market fit signals but aren't quite there yet and therefore aren't sure how to take the next best step. There are a lot of people out in the marketplace looking for work, but not so many who have specific knowledge of early stage GTM motions working across product, marketing, analytics and potentially sales with significant budget constraints; 3. there's liquidity in the funding landscape, but not a lot of incentive for first time investments these days, so getting funding is very, very tough, particularly without some traction (which is often exacerbated by point 2) and a big, big business case that can justify the exponential growth needed in a 5-7 year cycle; 4. it is very hard to try to compete in the organic demand generation game in many verticals - there's just too much content out there, and algorithm changes are depressing search ranking results for lots of businesses; 5. businesses are looking at revenue per head, turning to "business in a box" solutions that help them scale out certain activities without adding to headcount - early examples of this include the fabulous Clay.com, which is an SDR and BDR combined into one (and, in my opinion, an example of a great use case for point 1). We're living in crazy, crazy times but I'm happy to say that I am seeing lots of great companies grow and flourish with the help of accelerators, networking groups, workshops, pitch competitions, advisory and mentorship relationships and just 1:1 asks - it really does take a village to grow a business! Some areas I see growing particularly well are the health analytics and data, personalized care and (of course) AI spaces. Any other challenges you're having? Together with Dr Jussi Westergren, Emmy Network Fellow in Computer Science at Keble College, Oxford, I’ve written for Sifted on the importance of the budget tomorrow for the future of UK tech. It’s absolutely vital that the Government invests in developing the country’s next-generation compute capacity - or ‘supercomputers.’ Next-generation compute is set to drive breakthroughs in everything from drug discovery to financial modelling via supply chain and how we understand language in the near future. And will also create value for businesses and enable startups to accelerate their development exponentially. If the government does not adequately support home-grown supercomputing, the UK risks losing its status as a leading tech hub as its startups struggle to compete with rivals in Europe and the US. But by delivering funding and fostering a conducive wider investment environment, Britain could thrive in the supercomputing era. The depth of tech, research and business talent in this country is second to none, and the appetite from start-ups, corporations and researchers is there. A great deal of work has already been undertaken in Edinburgh in preparation for this investment. Additional schemes can be balanced around the country, and indeed there are a number of sites which would be suitable to host a supercomputer system. Bletchley Park is such a site: with obvious historical symbolism, geographic advantages and the recent host of the global AI safety summit. Alan Turing brought enormous benefits to humankind, and it would be a fitting tribute to him. Turing Machines still influence current computer science and the Turing Test is more relevant than ever. Close to Oxford, Cambridge and London - home to many of the finest brains in the world - the Bletchley Park SuperCompute is a project that must happen. Full piece here:

75% of femtech startups were refused a bank account. In any other industry, this would be a scandal. For femtech, it's just another day battling systemic bias that's stifling innovation in women's health. I've backed multiple femtech businesses and regularly speak with women in the industry. Their stories are both shocking and depressingly familiar. Despite serving half the world's population and a £22.3 billion market, femtech receives just 1-2% of health tech funding. This disparity isn't just unfair—it's dangerous. An article by The Guardian last week revealed: • 60% of femtech companies had bank accounts closed • 50% faced "excessive scrutiny" from financial institutions • Many spend £100,000 monthly on digital ads, only to face constant bans censHERship's research of 35 femtech companies found 100% experienced similar issues. The result: Two-thirds lost revenue, 54% faced higher costs, 43% delayed launches (credit to Clio Wood for exposing this). My own health tech startup faced weekly campaign suspensions, no-one-to-talk-to appeals, and ‘black box’ algorithms. But my experience isn't unique. Even product descriptions face absurd scrutiny. Béa Fertility couldn't use 'vagina' on Amazon, forced to use 'birth canal' instead. But anything with the word 'semen' in it? No problem at all. Between 2011-2021, only 4% of new drugs for female-specific conditions were approved in the US. We're not just losing products; we're losing progress. This isn't just a women's issue—it's a business, innovation, and human rights issue. Femtech isn't 'niche'. Women are 75% more likely to use digital health tools and spend 29% more on healthcare. The demand and innovation are there. What's missing is equal opportunity. Ironically, the UK has the second-largest share of femtech globally. We have the potential to lead change. Here’s what we can do:  • Follow and amplify femtech voices • Challenge biased policies when you see them • Educate your network about these issues Progress in femtech benefits everyone—women, business, and society. Non-Technical Founder Tax, it's real people let's be honest. So speaking at Founder events recently the biggest question I get is about "how I cope as a non-technical Founder" "how did I get this far" "How to find a tech co-founder" etc. Recently I have started understanding coding more in depth and can MAKE RUN on AI KAT MVP! all on my own. That's because I have a brilliant CTO who is willing and patient to teach me how, so I don't have such a big confidence and knowledge gap. So let's start with a definition: "Non-Technical Founder Tax refers to the extra costs in terms of time, money, and effort that entrepreneurs without a technical background often face while building a technology-based company." This topic is MASSIVE and I have decided to make it one of Content Pillars on my Female Founders Rise Personal Branding Challenge this month. So this is just the introductory post. But let's start with the top 3 problems I faced for sure: 🙊 COMMUNICATING YOUR VISION; The product and the product flow looks completely different in my head, than the words coming out my mouth, and what my CTO hears. Learning how to communicate with visuals, you gotta get a Sharpie and an A3 board. I draw and then try and communicate. Figma is also great there lots of no-code tools now for you to build a simple image that you can communicate. 👨‍🎤 UNDERSTANDING YOUR TECH STACK: This is a basic you need to know when speaking with partners and investors, you also need to understand the why behind the tools. Time and patience, you need time and a patient CTO who will help you truly understand this. Yes you will pay tax in research time but it is so worth it when you are credible in front of investors. 😍 CREDIBILITY: So Y Combinator has a very clear view on this. How can you have a tech company without a technical Co-Founder? I agree 100%. Yes it's the day and age of AI, yes you can outsource etc BUT you need to move fast and now you need to move faster, and if you have to wait and pay every time you need a feature update, you lost before you even started. That is literally a tax and will remain one. Not worth it. You won't make an FMCG product without a factory. Come now, and white labelling is really bad for profitability, growth and innovation. If you want to be a leader, you get your own production line. So yes, you can be absolutely brilliant and still need to get a CTO Co-Founder. That is the fastest way to scale. With low-code AI tools it certainly is much easier to get a prototype out the window, but a MVP a product with 100 000 users, not so much. It's painful I know!!! But it's worth it! Interesting conversation, but I’m about to say something controversial: just like David Shapiro, Yann Lecun is an #AI genius, but also an introvert with about zero people skills.
