According to a new study by Coalition Greenwich (a division of CRISIL) in collaboration with Axoni, capital markets data has exploded in terms of both volume and types. The growth of electronic trading, the creation of new products and strategies, and a surge in market volatility are all contributing to the boom in data. For some capital markets firms, manual data reconciliation adds millions of dollars in expenses every year, according to Audrey Costabile PhD, Senior Analyst for Coalition Greenwich Market Structure & Technology. “Across the industry, firms must embrace innovative data tools if they are to meet changing regulatory and operational demands while also ensuring data privacy, accuracy and efficiency,” Costabile said. Hong Kong’s financial services regulator has issued a guidance to banks for the use of Distributed Ledger Technologies. The guidance takes a risk and merits based approach that is pragmatic in nature. Whereas Basel argues that the use of public permissionless networks by banks should not take place, the HK guidance focuses on the need to identify and mitigate risks. Hong Kong has in the last 18 months emerged as a key centre of financial services and technology regulation innovation, as the city continues to chart its next chapter as a global financial centre.
