Core Highways has recently joined the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA), and we’re excited to share more about what this means for us! Who is CECA? CECA, or the Civil Engineering Contractors Association, is the leading body representing companies that work every day to deliver, upgrade, and maintain the UK’s infrastructure. With over 300 members across England, Scotland, and Wales, CECA represents businesses that account for over 80% of civil engineering work in the UK. CECA advocates for these firms, sharing their expertise with clients, government, and the media, and supporting members in delivering over £15 billion worth of work annually. What Does This Mean for Core Highways? Joining CECA brings Core Highways a range of benefits, including networking with Tier 1 clients, influencing industry standards, and gaining valuable insights into future project pipelines. Recently, Simon White, our Managing Director for Major Projects & National Clients, welcomed Paul Santer, the CECA South West Regional Director, to our Torquay office. Since 2020, Simon has also chaired CECA’s National Highway Maintenance Group, representing members in the term maintenance sector. During their meeting, they discussed Core Highways’ new brand, recent project successes, and how CECA membership will support us in developing key partnerships and connecting with clients across the highways, utilities, and broader construction sectors. Our Pippa Birch has contributed another fabulous article for Bid Solutions ' Bidding Quarterly - number 19, Exploring the Bid Lifecycle. Pippa was chosen, unsurprisingly, to put her thoughts down about writing. She comments on good planning, removing unnecessary words, and how writers can keep learning. She ends with the message to all bid writers - "Love what you do. You have an incredible skill." How would you feel about giving away £7,000? Here DFL-UK this we we did just that, well I dont wish to point fingers but 👉 Ryan Carroll and our Light Impact and Planning team did just that. Why would I share this... because I feel it's important that I share the DFL ethos when it comes to working with our clients. We don't do things as they are easy. We do the things to show the value comes from the building longer term relationships, savings our clients more money in the long run. SO! Our client came to us with a stringent planning conditions that were written in a way that would lead significant monitoring and assessment pre and post survey. With no outputs for the data or rationale as to what the data was there to demonstrate. We engaged with the client, assisted them in the proposed rewording of the condition. Written in such a way for a better placed impact assessment and strategy to be written and allow a framework for the lighting within the scheme to be delivered. Leading to a 70% saving on the revised fees for the client. How much did it cost our client to get to this point??? NOTHING! Because here at DFL we know the value in trust, so by showing our clients what we can do. Our surveyors recently completed a two-day course focusing on compliance with CDM 2015 Regulations. Understanding the roles of the Client, Principal Designer, and Principal Contractor is key to ensuring project success. Our team is equipped to navigate the complexities of the regulations and provide expert guidance to our project teams for safe and compliant building projects. Several developments are underway in the construction industry that will impact all projects. From the recent implementation of the Building Safety Act 2022 to the release of new Building Regulation Approved Documents (later this year) and the introduction of the Building Regulation Principal Designer role, significant changes are on the horizon. These updates will reshape how projects are managed and monitored, ultimately leading to safer construction sites. Success Story: Helping R Find His Path in Construction. Working together makes a difference! This #LearningDisabilityWeek, we're highlighting the collaborative effort between Cardiff Council's Into Work team, the Social Change Team, and a local contractor, ISG, to support R, a young man with a learning disability, in finding his path to employment in construction through their Community Well-being benefits offer linked to the Fairwater campus project. Building a Supportive Network: R's journey began with his Into Work mentor identifying his interest in construction. Recognising his diagnosis of Autism, the Social Change Team sought a supportive environment. ISG Steps Up: Through negotiation with ISG, a tailored support plan was created. R's mentor advocated for him, ensuring his voice and choices were heard. Confidence Boost: R's journey started strong. He completed his CSCS training with flying colours, boosting his confidence in his chosen field. Building Understanding: A meeting with ISG facilitated a comfortable environment for R to meet his dedicated worker and site manager. Additionally, R's mother, a strong advocate, provided valuable insight into his needs and wants. Success on Site: R has completed his onsite induction and a successful initial work experience session. Both R's mother and the ISG manager report positive experiences. “Working with R has been a pleasure for us all at ISG Fairwater, we can see R's confidence and ability growing each time he comes to site. Close contact is maintained with OCA to align with R's goals.” - ISG Manager Moving Forward: This ongoing process is carefully monitored to ensure the pace and work sessions align with R's needs. Additional sessions are planned, followed by reviews to determine the next steps and facilitate his growth with ISG's support. R's story is a testament to the power of collaboration in helping individuals with disabilities achieve their #employment goals. Railway Contractual DOOM! As many of us are aware this time of year the contractual work goes slightly quiet, but with CP7 we may be in for a slightly longer pick up time of contractual work. This is the perfect time to UPSKILL and perhaps MULTISKILL! But HOW? Many of us just followed our friends or colleagues into our trades. You may of got into the railway through the jobcentre or correction centres but yet have been given zero guidance on the different choices and decisions you'll have to face when it comes to your career paths. The Railway industry is notoriously poor at career path guidance and with thousands of contractors being left to "figure it out" on their own, CR feel like its time we take a new approach at this issue. Within the App for contractors you'll be able to see outlined career progression paths with examples of expected wages and expected experience in the knowledge field you wish to progress into. You'll be able for the first time be able to plan your career path in the comfort of requirements. For example; your personal work in deregistration has gone quiet but you notice there is an influx of LXA's required within your geographical area. So you can switch the app over to training mode and you'll be able to see what the requirements for the LXA course are, the expected wages after completing the course and you'll also be able to see the course providers within the app to which you'll be able to contact directly. ✅Southampton Stairs ✅South Western Railway INVVU were instructed by South Western Railway to carry out the initial survey and undertake the architectural feasibility option design for a new staircase, to replace the existing one on an embankment at Southampton Central Station. The feasibility design has been completed with a structural design report covering the GRIP 4 stage design of the proposed staircase option. INVVU proposed the most suitable option based on the client's requirements while minimising the design process time. Although the project is relatively small in scale, the proposed design includes an in-situ reinforced concrete (RC) retaining wall and foundation base, a prefabricated steel staircase, and mini pile/screw pile foundations. This approach ensures the most economical solution, considering the full life cycle of the design. #architecture #structuralengineering #designlifecycle #staircase #rail #station
