The future of outdoor navigation is learning-based SLAM! One of the largest problems with SLAM is that it requires all keypoints to be stored in memory. For some packages, even a few seconds outside leads to the RAM getting filled, and the mapping crashes. The acezero package is interesting because it seeks to learn poses. Similar to CNNs and LLMs, minimization of computational resources is a possibility while still ingesting large amounts of data! I spent an afternoon making some new business cards featuring some of my #3D #photogrammetry scans. They arrived over the weekend! • Cards + stickers printed with MOO. • 3D models optimised with rapidpipeline.com by DGG - The 3D Pipeline Company. • Image tracked AR with Adobe Aero. A great combo imo! Things to try next time: • Use postcards, business cards are a bit tiny for image tracking. • Figure out some more high contrast ways to present the images, some images work better than others. • Try contactless NFC tags instead of QR codes for URL sharing? #GLAM3D

🌍 Google Maps is transforming into an AR platform — at the I/O 2024 conference, the launch of AR in Maps was announced! This is super exciting — Google alone has scans of lots of cities across the planet and the VPS Geospatial system, which allows content to be linked to geo-coordinates or even buildings. The closest AR+VPS competitors, Snapchat and Niantic, only cover the centers of a few big cities. Currently, Geospatial works in Unity (complicated, requires creating an app and users downloading it), AR Core for Android (same issue), or Adobe Aero (works poorly, though no download is needed). Soon, all this will work in the Google Maps app and web version on all platforms (iOS and Android). You just need to be near the desired location, and Maps will offer to activate AR. The program will be launched in a six-month test phase in Singapore and Paris, and later worldwide. I still have many questions about content and moderation though. If 100 experiences are uploaded to the Eiffel Tower, which one will activate? Will all of them be offered? In what order? And who will moderate a local store in a provincial town? If you can get past the high queue times 😅 what Luma AI Dream Machine does exceptionally well is combine 3D spatial data with AI interpretation - meaning it does an excellent job with consistency and logic. These are just some initial tests but its clear that the team is really on to something here. I'm not sure it quite kills OpenAI's Sora, but its definitely a tremendous step above Runway and Pika so far. As always I wanted to test it with animation as well as live action, and while the results are definitely hit and miss its a very interesting entry into the text/image to video race.
