These suspects reportedly forced their way into a farmhouse for dinner before moving towards Pathankot, triggering a high alert in the border districts of Gurdaspur and Pathankot. Punjab Police, along with the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Indian Army, have intensified combing operations and secured critical installations such as the Mamun Army Cantonment and the Pathankot Air Force Station. Over 1,000 police personnel are involved in the recce and search operations, with heightened checks at railway stations, bus stands, and all vehicles on the Gurdaspur-Pathankot-Jammu National Highway. This incident underscores the persistent threats along the border regions, echoing past infiltrations that led to tragic attacks in 2015. As the Amarnath Yatra approaches, the vigilance and coordinated efforts of our security forces are crucial to ensuring the safety and security of our nation. 👮 Then and now 👮 I joined the Metropolitan Police Force in February 1982, as a result of Mrs Thatcher’s drive to recruit more police officers, following the Edmund Davies report into police pay. Police pay had been increased dramatically in 1981. What has also been forgotten is that police officers received other benefits including accommodation at a significantly reduced cost, within Section Houses or police owned homes, free dental treatment and prescriptions, free travel, mileage and expenses in cash payments. Overtime was freely available. There were Divisonal and Sub Divisional police stations on every Borough, all with cell space and custody suites. The Met had an incredible Training School covering a vast swathe of land in Hendon, with a driving school attached and a Cadet School for future police officers. Fitness and sport were at the heart of the police service, with a focus on sporting excellence. In the Met it was all supported by four well kept and popular Sports Clubs across each area of the Capital. Police officers were highly respected by the public, who could expect an immediate police response to any call, and a thorough investigation if they became the victim of crime. The focus was very much on pro activity. Stop and search was a regular daily routine. Arrests of drunks, prostitutes, shoplifters and other low level offences was normal. It was all overtime for court the next day. Police officers took their own cases to court and presented them. Those who joined the Job expected to serve for 30 years and then receive a very good pension(which they paid for monthly). It was a vocation. You did not need a degree, common sense and an ability to communicate were a must. At that time there were only 24,000 officers in The Met and all were focussed on doing their best to keep their communities safe. There has been a constant erosion of policing resourcing and capability over the years, with Mrs May’s period as PM being the worst. We need an efficient, well paid and vocational police service. There are currently serious problems in policing but they are all easily resolved by a truly supportive and independent leadership. Time for change.

Exciting news! The Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill, also known as Martyn's Law, has been officially introduced to Parliament as of the 12th September 2024, marking a major step forward in public safety. First mentioned in the King's speech in July, Martyn's Law aims to ensure that venues and events are better equipped to respond to potential attacks, protecting everyone from harm. This new law will introduce a tiered approach, meaning premises will have tailored security measures based on factors such as number of attendees—making sure each venue gets the right level of protection. Once Martyn's Law has made it through Parliament, the SIA (Security Industry Authority) has been chosen by the Home Secretary to regulate and uphold these important responsibilities, an understandable and wise choice. As Thames Valley Police’s decision to expand its public scrutiny panels to include oversight of officers’ use of force video footage brings the issue of scrutiny back into the media, Montell Neufville MCMI, police ethics advisor and Chair of the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Police Scrutiny Panel overseeing road police and armed police across the three counties, sets out five key reasons why he believes oversight and accountability are crucial to effective policing. ❝Over the years the Peelian principles have come to be regarded as the framework for the UK’s policing by consent model, and are, I believe, as relevant today as they were almost 200 years ago.❞ ❝Police officers are trained on judgement and decision-making, have a requirement to act with honesty and integrity, and – when force is necessary – must use the least amount of force required.❞ ❝In addition to training and being held to account by their peers, officers are accountable to their supervisors and to the Home Office through inspections. Response 1 : We are not sure that even Home Affairs & its Critical Worker Check (with its basic ASIO check) would be able to capture/detect this & then provide a red flag. Response 2: It would seem ripe to be tested by the Human Rights Commission, perhaps for criminal history discrimination. Solution: Meet Australian Standards 4811 Workforce Screening, with a customised organisational suitable assessment (OSA) which includes a deep, fair and fast 1:1 interview & risk assessment. I’m halfway through ploughing through the ‘impact assessment’ document from the Home Office (signed off only last Wednesday by the minister Dan Jarvis) about Martyn’s Law – the term Protect Duty is out the window. A classic snippet on page 32; estimates of how often the SIA’s inspectors (fewer than 100) will actually visit premises. In the ‘enhanced’ tier, all outdoor music festivals, hospitals and theme parks, but mainly retail, hotels and big pubs and nightclubs – five per cent a year. The standard tier (venues of 200-plus capacity), one per cent a year. In other words Alton Towers (for the sake of a name) will get inspected once every five years.
