It is surprising, given the number of hotel brands these days, that there is nothing quite like our product in the Canadian hotel market today. There are extended stay hotels that are the typical “beige” hotel and there are what we now refer to as “lifestyle” or even “experiential” hotels that offer better design and are generally in better locations, smaller and more intimate.  But no one is doing what we do. Our reviews and the fact that we are getting more than our -fair-market-share in every market we operate, tells us we are onto something. #hotels #hotelmanagement

So many talks about lack of regulations and quality control in the short-term rental industry. There’s always been this never ending pursuit of us wanting to be taken ‘as seriously’ as the hotel sector, etc etc. But: Have you ever considered that if every STR operator became I-PRAC accredited then this alone would compel the industry in its entirety to STEP UP and actually deliver? I’m not claiming it would solve all our problems. But (and you can quote us on this), it would fix a lot. So, I’m left wondering why some are still failing to take action… I don’t believe it to be just a money-related concern, as the investment to become an I-PRAC member costs less than a takeout coffee a day. Far less than all the money you may be wasting on paid ads on social media (Disclaimer: If you don’t have a content and trust marketing strategy, no amount of paid ads will save you). Are people just complacent? Or maybe they don’t really want a direct bookings’ brand as much as they say they do? Maybe industry credibility is not at the top of their priority list? It can’t be, if they’re not investing in such an easy, ready-made tool. No judgement here. It’s just that I see a lot of talk from experts and operators, yet very little follow-through when it comes to the basic steps. Glimmers Of Hope’ For Hospitality Sector Says UKHospitality CEO There are ‘glimmers of hope’ for the hospitality sector following years of intense cost squeezes and unpredictability battering businesses according to the chief executive of UKHospitality Kate Nicholls. Speaking at the Arena 2024 Savoy Lecture on 22nd April 2024, Nicholls delivered a sector update in which she expressed positivity that the challenges the hospitality sector has faced were potentially ‘coming to an end’ with a more positive and predictable economic environment in sight. “It’s never been harder to turn that top line revenue into a bottom-line profit,” she said, acknowledging that increases in food, water and electricity costs, and the cost-of-living crisis, were having “a real, continued impact” on businesses. she offered reasons for optimism, including the rebounding of global travel and signs of recovery in business, meetings and events, and a projected increase in consumer spend over the coming months, with socialising and eating and drinking out still a priority for consumers. She cautiously suggested the industry was “potentially over the worst”, with inflation set to ease to 3.2% in March, interest cuts expected later this year, and energy and food prices starting to come down, which should feed into improving consumer confidence. The event was followed by networking drinks, a canapé reception and a three-course dinner, as well as a raffle, which raised over £900 for industry charities the Springboard Charity and Hospitality Action. 📊 21% of hoteliers think hotel technology is sufficient The Hospitality Women’s Innovation Council (WIC), a working group of hotel brand executives, managers and innovators, found that only one in five hotel professionals believe the current tech stack is sufficient to help hoteliers achieve efficiencies and cost savings and take care of guests adequately. The hospitality industry, once a symbol of prosperity and vibrant community life, is facing unprecedented challenges. Sadly, hotel insolvencies are climbing, and beloved pubs and bars are closing their doors. The landscape has shifted dramatically, making it clear that running a hotel today is no longer just a lifestyle choice—it's a significant business risk. I remember when a hotel brigade could easily consist of over 100 chefs, constantly debating the teachings of Escoffier. Even at the Earls Court Exhibition Centre, we had a brigade of 50 chefs, a stark contrast to the last time I visited, where a mere 2 chefs were supported by temporary hires. The Savoy still boasts a brigade of around 120 chefs, and The Ritz operates with about 60, but such large teams are becoming rarities. Minimum wages, skill shortages, and Brexit have gradually reduced brigade sizes, forcing many chefs to multitask. In recent years, we've lost many famous venues, and even Michelin-starred chefs are reporting that they barely break even. Our industry faces increasing challenges daily. When will the government provide the support we need, including greater mobility of staff with Europe and a much-needed reduction in VAT? Despite these pressures, renowned establishments and high standards keep our industry afloat. However, the ever-increasing operational difficulties are straining what was once the backbone of our country. Several factors are driving this change: - **Rising Inflation:** Increased costs across the board are squeezing profit margins. - **High Interest Rates:** Financing for operations and expansions has become more expensive. - **Skyrocketing Utilities:** Energy and utility bills are at an all-time high. - **Higher Minimum Wages:** While fair pay is crucial, it adds pressure to already tight budgets. - **Reduced Customer Spending:** People are going out less, impacting revenue. - **Brexit-Induced Staff Shortages:** Finding and retaining skilled staff is more challenging than ever. - **Impact of COVID-19 and Other Black Swan Events:** The pandemic and other unforeseen events have left lasting scars. In this difficult environment, it’s no surprise to see a pub close and a supermarket open in its place. Supermarkets thrive with high profits, low staff headcounts, and self-service models—traits that starkly contrast with the labor-intensive hospitality sector. As more people choose to eat at home, the need for innovation and resilience in our industry has never been greater.
