Thank you Urenco Capenhurst! Brilliant visit with Supporters of Nuclear Energy - SONE to the Urenco uranium enrichment plant in Capenhurst, Cheshire. I am thrilled to have been asked to be Patron of SONE. Special shout out to John Goodall, Mike Dutton and Neil Fagan - at Urenco Capenhurst - I have been a regular visitor to the site over the years - and their enthusiasm for Urenco Global and all things nuclear is infectious. MD Doug Annan and his team do an excellent job welcoming visitors and supporting the local community. Urenco is one third owned by the UK government, one third by the Dutch government and one third by two German utilities, E.ON S.E. and RWE AG. In May 2024 the UK government awarded £196m to Urenco to build a uranium enrichment facility with the capacity to produce up to 10 tonnes of high-assay low-enriched uranium per year by 2031. The new facility is being built at Urenco's Capenhurst site and will support around 400 jobs and put an end to Russia's reign as the only commercial producer of HALEU fuel in Europe. HALEU - uranium enriched to between 5% and 20% uranium-235 - will be used in the advanced nuclear fuel required for most of the next-generation reactor designs currently under development. At present, only Russia and China have the infrastructure to produce HALEU at scale. Our October issue of Engage is now available summarising all the headline news from the previous couple of months. Highlights include: 🔹 The publication of our updated Guide to Professional Registration, offering the latest guidance on how to achieve professional registration as an engineer or technician. 🔹 The Engineering Council signing a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) with the USA’s National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) establishing a streamlined process for recognising professional engineering qualifications between the UK and the USA. 🔹 The publication of the Grenfell Tower Phase 2 report, the final report of the public inquiry into the systemic failings that contributed to the loss of so many lives back in 2017. The report makes further recommendations to strengthen regulation and improve systems and the EngC remains committed to working with Government and the professional engineering community to uphold and promote the highest standards of competence for all engineers and technicians. This includes the publishing in November 2023 of UK-SPEC HRB, a contextualised version of the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence and Commitment (UK-SPEC) that sets out specifically the competences required for professional engineers working on higher-risk buildings. 🔹 News from the Royal Academy of Engineering including our congratulations to those registrants who have been elected as RAEng Fellows and notice that nominations for the Academy’s 2025 Major Project Award for Sustainability and the Princess Royal Silver Medal are now open. 🔹 National Engineering Day, led by the Royal Academy of Engineering, on 13 November which this year focuses on role models. NNL recently joined other Racial Equality in Nuclear (REiN UK) ambassadors from Sellafield Ltd, Frazer-Nash Consultancy and Jacobs at a high school in Bolton to speak with pupils and their carers about the different job opportunities in the nuclear industry. REiN is eliminating barriers that disallow ethnic communities from thriving in the nuclear sector. The REiN Ambassadors set up a fun ‘nuclear waste’ sorting challenge and spoke with both carers and pupils about the different projects they were working on and the types of early careers available. They were asked to complete a short questionnaire to see whether they had considered a career in nuclear before the evening, and if they felt differently afterwards. Our results showed that 83% of parents / carers were more supportive of their child embarking on a career in nuclear. On the other hand, some pupils were already considering a career in nuclear. After trying one of our ‘NNL lab’ games and talking to our ambassadors, around 60% moved at least one point more in favour of considering a career; with several moving from negative to positive. Emin Veron, co-founder of REiN said “Too often aspirations for working in STEM or in a STEM adjacent profession are curtailed at the early stages in secondary school, where either a lack of knowledge about available opportunities, the risk of getting it wrong, or even stigma around choices can lead to people going down a different path. It was fantastic for REiN to join forces with organisations from across our sector, showing a united front, and amplifying the impact we have by working together. Through engagement with parents as a sector we can start to understand what students and the communities they are part of might think or experience – which might not be visible or obvious to us – and this is so important when we start to look at how to attract and retain skilled people who live at the many intersections of our society.” The results of this pilot will provide valuable information to the REiN network to roll out further interactions, it will inform future NNL delivery of social value, and will be shared across the nuclear industry to understand what factors attract young people to consider careers in nuclear.

We know just the book for you! 💡   Lewis Jackson an Engineer in Orano Limited’s Decommissioning Team, has co-authored a section of the 2nd volume of “Power On: A Beginner’s Guide to the Nuclear Industry”. This starters guide to the #nuclear industry includes the fundamentals of nuclear science and how nuclear power plants work, the history of the industry, nuclear sites within the UK, and key challenges being talked about within and by the industry.   Lewis collaborated closely with Jessica B., a Research Technologist with National Nuclear Laboratory, to discuss waste management, its characterisation and categories, and what radioactive waste means. ♻   Lewis had this to say about his involvement: “Part of my interest in getting involved with the project is my previous experience researching high-level nuclear waste, and the challenges presented by storing and disposing of the waste safely to protect workers, the public and the environment. Speaking to both technical experts in the field and members of the public, I realised that perhaps the largest challenge associated with this waste is more societal rather than scientific, as there is a lot of misinformation within the public sphere regarding this waste. Therefore, I consider it essential that we do more to communicate to the public who are not technical experts on the subject of nuclear waste. This should hopefully remove the stigma surrounding it and help increase public acceptance. We were delighted to host Gillian Martin, Acting Cabinet Secretary for Net Zero and Energy, at our Hydrogen Build & Assembly Centre in Cambuslang, Glasgow, last Thursday for the launch of Scotland’s Hydrogen Sector Export Plan. Interesting story today. Using consultancy is not a bad thing in itself and everyone including Ofgem do it. Consultancy should be in my mind short term, specific and focussed on an area where internal capability needs development or simply isn’t required long term. It shouldn’t really be a ‘land and expand’ model where permanent roles become consultant filled. Wylfa to be home to one of the UK’s largest nuclear power plants, as large as Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C According to reports, the proposed Wylfa nuclear power plant will be as large as the 3,200 MWe EPR Hinkley Point C and the 3,200 MWe Sizewell C nuclear power stations. @Hinkley Point C is currently under construction in Somerset, England, while Sizewell C is being built in Suffolk, England. In May 2024, the UK ministers named the site, which is situated west of Cemaes Bay on the island of Anglesey, off the northwestern coast of Wales, as the preferred site for the project. This came approximately 6 months after the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Nuclear Energy urged the ministers to back Wylfa for the construction of the nuclear power plant. The cross-party group of MPs and Peers also urged the government to start negotiating as soon as possible to determine which reactor technology is best placed to deliver the project. Reportedly, the government is already in talks with nuclear reactor technology providers that have expressed their interest in the construction of the nuclear power plant at Wylfa. These companies include Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) (KEPCO or Hanjeon), Westinghouse Electric Company and Électricité de France (EDF). KEPCO is proposing the use of its APR1400 reactor technology in the construction of the Wylfa nuclear power plant. The APR1400 reactor technology has recently been used at the Barakah nuclear power plant, the United Arab Emirates’ first nuclear power station, the first nuclear power station in the Arabian Peninsula, the second of its kind in the Persian Gulf region and the first commercial nuclear power station in the Arab World. Westinghouse on the other hand, in conjunction with Bechtel Corporation, an American engineering, procurement, construction, and project management company, is proposing the use of its AP1000 reactor technology while EDF is proposing its own EPR units that are deployed at Hinkley Point and Sizewell. UK’s government’s ambitious plan to generate 24 gigawatts of energy from nuclear by 2050 The development of the Wylfa nuclear power plant is part of the UK’s government ambitious plan to increase its nuclear energy production from 6 to 24 gigawatts (enough to provide a quarter of the UK’s electricity needs) by 2050. This will be the biggest expansion of nuclear power in the country for 70 years. The end goal is to reduce electricity bills, support thousands of jobs and improve UK energy security. In addition to the construction of the gigawatt nuclear power plant, as part of the plan, the government will also invest up to £300 million in the production of HALEU, the fuel required to power high-tech new nuclear reactors, and £10 million in the development of skills and sites needed to produce other advanced nuclear fuels in the UK. https://lnkd.in/efZ_ysWr
