Former Apple product designer, Sir Jon Ives, discusses the process of advancing an idea. He believes that generating ideas happens when you take the time to think, assess problems that need solving, and engage with a diverse range of reading and learning. Sir Jon highlights the challenge founders face in turning an idea into a product. In July, UX/UI design briefs saw their biggest position drop ever. Falling from its usual position in our top three down to sixth place, this represents a huge shift in ‘typical’ demand on our platform. This category was our highest performing, both value- and volume-wise, in 2023, and so it comes as a shock to see its investment deplete so suddenly this month. It made up over double of the amount of briefs in January as it did this month (13% compared to 6.3%). In the digital world, it seems a frustrating pattern has emerged—a cycle that starts with promise, slides into mediocrity, and leaves users and businesses disillusioned. This is 'enshittification' (shoutout to Kouch Culture friends David Bloom, and Ben Dietz), the decline of once-unstoppable platforms. Enshittification isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a warning. We should stay mindful of where they invest our time, exploring new platforms that put us first. For businesses, it’s about diversifying, don’t rely on one platform to define your brand. Introverts vs extroverts and then all the nuance and folk who sit in between those two ends of the scale. To be a good design leader (or a leader more generally) do you need to be one or the other? Both have different strengths, values and likely different ways of approaching things. I think the two ends of that scale will likely have quite different styles but I would argue that there is no one size fits all approach.
