Am I weird for being excited about seeing this sort of cache hit ratio on the Design Week website? It's the best we've achieved on any site - in part because we give ourselves the budget to work on what we feel is really important on a website. One of those things being lightning fast performance. People don't like waiting to read stuff! The content on most pages is delivered to the browser within around 50ms or less and pages will often be fully rendered (minus images if you have a very large screen) within 200ms. The images part is another interesting one. Rather than serving a few pre-sized thumbnails, because image quality is super important to designers, we serve up images rendered from very large sources at pixel perfect resolutions to our readers. This does result in a little slowness with images on 4k monitors, say, but for the vast majority of users results in optimised bandwidth and really clear presentation. That's the nerdy stuff over. It's not very opinionated though, so I'll not be getting much attention!

The 3 words every Online Service Provider dreads hearing from their clients ESPECIALLY last thing on a Friday… “Could you just …” This is the phrase that almost always comes before you are asked to do something out of scope. Usually, you’ve already finished your project, used up your allocated hours or scheduled the content for the upcoming month, and your client politely asks “Could you just…”. Whilst there is NOTHING wrong with your client asking you to do something for them, no matter how small, if it is out of scope of your agreement, it puts you into a difficult position. The great Exe-Squared code off..... We have a requirement to build a demo blood pressure monitoring system for a pharmacist. It's a fairly straight forwards system which will allow the pharmacist to add blood pressure readings for clients and display their last month's data via a graph or export. It was also include a level of monitoring and external alerting via email. I suggested it could be developed using a low code code solution. These use tools to build your interface, display results and graphs and carry out actions without needing much code. They are often faster to develop, but you can hit the buffers in functionality. I am going to use Formidable Forms as my low code builder. My colleague Matt Treleaven believes that he could build a similar system in the same amount time using a full coded solution - the Laravel framework. He will be able to reuse some existing code and use a bit of generative AI to help speed up the coding process. He'll also be able to do things using Laravel which would be tricky using Formidable. Not that we are in anyway competitive, but we have decided to have a bit of a competition. I'm going to build it it using the low code method, and Matt's going to use the Laravel solution. We've allowed ourselves 8 hours next Thursday (8am to 4pm) and at the end of the day the rest of the office will judge the best solution against the requirement, based on functionality, useability, aesthetics and reliability - the loser buys cakes. So just how much can we build in one day - and who will win the great Exe Squared code off?
