Hi everyone, I’m excited to share Phoenix Contact’s 2023 Sustainability Report with you. Sustainability is more crucial than ever, and we’re working hard to create a future we can all enjoy. Our report highlights both our progress and the challenges we still face.  We know that achieving full sustainability is tough, and we don’t have all the answers yet to become climate neutral by 2050. But I believe in our team’s innovation, creativity, and determination to find the right solutions.  Here are some key highlights from the sustainability report:   🌱 Green Electricity: Since 2022, all our locations have been powered by 100% renewable energy.  ⚡ Resource Efficiency: We’ve cut down our energy use and improved efficiency across our supply chain. Managing Matrix Organisation This issue keeps coming up in conversations with peers and business associates particularly in the context of international, multi-divisional sales organisation. Yet, in my experience this is a lot less complicated than it may seem at first glance. Essentially, a matrix organisation is a crossover of functional responsibility (i.e. sales) with disciplinary responsibility. A very good business model to take as a benchmark against which to view the matrix challenge and subsequently better understand how to manage such an organisation is the franchise business model. The franchisor holds the functional (horizontal) axis while the franchisee, an entrepreneur in his/her own right, represents the disciplinary (vertical) axis. The franchisor offers to support the franchisee in his/her business activities without depriving him/her of the full responsibility for the business. The aim is to create a win/win in which the franchisee can generate growth and profits of which the franchisor participates.   And these are the areas in which the franchisor offers support: 1.     Knowhow & Trainings 2.     A proven Business Model 3.     Brand Recognition 4.     Marketing & PR support 5.     Operational Support 6.     Centralised Sourcing & Procurement 7.     Centralised IT   So, to the managers who operate the horizontal axis: - create a portfolio of services as professional and easy to “commission” as possible and approach your colleague(s) from the vertical axis as if they were your customers. - understand your work as a service offered to help your “clients” to excel in their business activities - attach a price tag to your services to make commissioning them a real business decision If your “clients” do not commission your services, they either do not require assistance (check results at the end of FY) or your services lack in effectiveness (price/performance). Observe the vertical performance over two valuation periods (2x half-year or 2x FY) and then evaluate results with and without horizontal support.
