Wow! What a brilliant April so far for Apex Digital 🎉   Lots going on, and lots completing this week, so I think I've earned my morning coffee!   ▶ Coded a dataLayer schema for a growing e-commerce client on BigCommerce. The previous setup was inadequate leading to incorrect measurement. I fixed this with true ecommerce funnel measurement, Google Consent Mode, enhanced conversions, dashboards and cookie consent frameworks. ▶ Another BigCommerce implementation underway, defining dataLayers and tagging to ensure continuity of measurement during a new website launch. ▶ Produced an attribution report stitching together first party identifiers (user_id), CRM & GA4 data in Google BigQuery to provide true first touch acquisition sources for converted users for a property client. ▶ Data analytics project for a very interesting report around recruitment in tech (this one was very interesting to work on, and a little bit different). ▶ Full analytics setup of an online pharmacy website, with optimised Consent mode & cookie compliance framework. ▶ Setup full ecommerce funnel tracking for two clients (a distillery and a brewery), one on WordPress & WooCommerce and one on Shopify. Again, with the usual cookie compliance, consent mode & enhanced conversions. ▶ Preparations for a few new pitches, including a Server-Side tracking project, more ecommerce implementations & analytics audits. ▶ Became a Cookiebot Web CMP by Usercentrics premium implementation partner 🍪 ▶ Finalised a VERY exciting new retainer with a growing agency client - more on this in another post next week! ▶ I've also become a member of The Growth Community, a fantastic business networking group in Yorks & Lincs - would recommend them to any new business starting up. You don’t have to be in CRO to have an impact on conversion rate. I think a lot of people like to ‘stay in their lane’ when it comes to working on sites. I believe that whilst it is important to have clear roles and responsibilities across a site, I also think that SEO and PPC teams can help to improve conversion rate (and probably the performance of their own channels) by answering one specific question: What do I want users to do once they’re on this page? For example: 👉 Do you want them to convert? 👉 Do you want your page to prompt a follow up search/action? If so, what is it? …you get the picture. Once you have the answer to that, make sure your page satisfies it. For example, a few years ago I worked on the SEO strategy for a food intolerance brand. Our main conversion point was a PDP but we also built landing pages for specific intolerances. Originally these were in the form of blog posts with multiple posts targeting the same terms - we cleaned these up and consolidated content but that’s for another post. Back to the landing pages. We classified these as more “mid funnel” pages. Our theory was that if someone searches for a specific intolerance, they may be looking for more information but they may also be tempted to have their intolerance diagnosed. So we tested the theory. We briefed the concept of a module to be added to these pages which allowed users to add an intolerance test to their basket. The challenge was making this module functional without being too pushy. After some back and forth, the module went live. And those pages? They started driving conversions. We’re not talking huge amounts. The typical range was 0.5% to 1%. But the big win was that instead of relying on a PDP for conversions, we suddenly had more diversity in conversion sources. And that was huge. All from a theory on user journey, derived from search intent. TL;DR - if you’re in SEO, ask yourself that question about your pages and tweak accordingly. Happy Tuesday ✌️ #seo #cro

I hosted a 2-hour 'Training by Doing' session yesterday evening with a US web design agency via Zoom. Once I quickly understood where they are now and where they would like to get to when it comes to integrating SEO into their agency... I got them to share their screen, logged into one of their clients sites, and I talked them through making SEO tweaks/improvements live on the fly whilst explaining how to spot impactful opportunities, and talking through the why. It makes a massive difference than me just talking through a set of slides. Being hands-on doing the doing whist learning is so impactful. So something I’ve learnt very well over the years of working and managing PPC. You can have all the relevant keywords, correct targeting, optimised bidding signals, custom audiences etc. But if you’ve got a website that dosent convert well or not at all, it’s honestly a waste of spend. Invest in CRO and your ads will elevate the performance.

Universal Analytics is going, yes really, forever… you know that scary countdown timer that we’ve all been ignoring, well it’s time to take it seriously. So what does this mean? In short, the only Google Analytics data you’ll have access to after the 1st July is your GA4 data. No more referring back to 2019 in UA. Hopefully, you’ll have at least 2 years of data in your GA4 account and your CMS data to refer back to. But, if you reallly, like really want that UA data, it is possible to export it - but it’s not going to be a pretty dashboard like we’re used to. You’ll be left with a spreadsheet. This all sounds quite daunting and scary, especially as its data, we must keep it right? Ultimately it’s up to you. Before acting, you should consider if you actually need it, how often are you dipping into your UA account? TLDR… You won’t be able to access data in Universal Analytics from the 1st July If you want to export this data - you can If you have any questions - we’re here to help! I walked away from the SEO-agency fast lane to play a different game. Why? 'Cause the SEO industry, folks, is grinding its gears. We're talking crazy hours, firefighting daily issues, and a growth-at-all-costs culture that's cooking up a serious burnout epidemic. Heard it from too many of you to know it's not just a sore thumb; it's the whole darn hand. And the usual industry response? "Well, that's agency life." Not on my watch. I've seen the other side. Agencies that play nice, value their people, and still kill it in the game. So, I switched lanes. Now, I wear the recruiter hat. Why am I telling you this?  Because, friends, I'm on a mission.  To match you with agencies that treat you right. To push those in power to quit the burnout BS. I've mentioned the insights from Mark Ellaway and the team at Bigfork Limited before. This report is well worth a butchers. Two takeaways that chimed with me are that '75% of B2B buyers prefer a rep–free sales experience.' and that what buyers really want from a website is information to help them buy!
