FASHION QUO VADIS? PRIORITISE IMPACT OVER ENTERTAINMENT Interesting. More and more I hear people in fashion state that “fashion is all about entertainment”. In a way, I view this as a linear extrapolation of the “Fashion brands need to become editors” which came up when the digital pure play platforms in fashion saw their market shares rise and people viewed their “curation” of products and their editorial approach as the main key success factors compared to the online and offline worlds of traditional department stores and brands at the time. And I do understand why Pharrell William’s spectacular Paris fashion premiere for Louis Vuitton was viewed as a celebration of joy and coming together and particularly as the “transition of fashion into entertainment”. I also understand where the eyeing of larger luxury players to the glamourous entertainment world on the US West coast as well as their appetite for talent agencies comes from. However, I am very confident that focusing on entertainment only or even using that as your strategic north star will be a route to failure and decline. Sure, storytelling continues to be critical, and I actually believe that we need to elevate storytelling to an entirely different level to take luxury into the future - leveraging pioneering digital (immersive) technologies as well as curated, multi-sensory approaches. And entertainment has some role in that. But at the core of your strategy needs to be something else, at least in my view, and that has just been perfectly articulated by The Future Laboratory at their annual Trend Briefing: We need to “Prioritise impact over entertainment”. The quantitative research that they executed with their Future Poll in the US and the UK clearly shows that this is what consumers really want - across all generations. Impact, not entertainment. Fashion is facing a critical decision: focus on impact or on entertainment. I believe that engineering a dream is no longer sufficient to generate desire. And desire/desirability is at the heart of all luxury. It’s time to think deeper in order to generate real relevance. Time to understand that the new luxurious dreams of the future need to be grounded in better realities. Time to rethink fashion and luxury for the future. Panagora marketing team in Korea usually had to show other brands what they did or keep an eye on them regarding total landed cost in Korea. Now brands after Farfetch and Matches Fashion has few players left to reach some of the largest crossboarder ecommerce markets (read: new opportunity) It all started to happened when investors 💰 came into the picture, can it be one of the reasons ? matches fashion founded 1987 and launched ecommerce 2007. Striding back to the office Great example of how clients can often provide valuable data led insights into wider social trends. SPOKE is seeing increasing demand, which in part is attributed to the wider return to the office trend, with sales of their more formal trouser cuts increasing relative to their most informal styles. African High Jewellery: any thoughts? Akano Diamonds whose founder and creative director Akunna Nwala I interviewed for Wallpaper* are proposing all roads lead to Lagos for those one of a kind pieces that become future heirlooms. Akano Diamonds could in many ways be viewed as a geographic disruptor. Given that the Place Vendôme has long been regarded as the mecca for all things double digit carat and above featuring the rarest gemstones, by situating itself on the continent - a location where many heritage houses continue to source their precious gemstones and metals Nwala-Akano has achieved an important intervention. Africa is no longer just a raw materials provider but also a place with specific normative concerns, that when translated into jewellery result in pieces of comparable beauty. For her part, Nwala-Akano's body of work effortlessly weaves African folklore, aesthetic concerns and even traditional cosmology into each of the Demi-parures she has presented. A stand alone store in the heart of Victoria Island will open later in the year, with a fine jewellery offering available, so those of more modest means can be dipped in Akano Diamonds should they wish. Conversations around African jewellery have often not allowed for space or indeed amplification of what is happening in the contemporary jewellery landscape. Whilst traditional making techniques endure, there is a hybridity that is often missed in the conversations. Wait for it...wait for it…. 🫷🏻 Like most of us in the UK, Celine has been waiting for the sunny weather, but because of her launch deadline, she asked me to photograph her holiday cottage a few weeks ago on an overcast day in May. ☁️ When you first launch a new cottage-to-let onto the market, you have to rely on relatively last minute bookings as people discover you during an online browse, so Celine was hoping a burst of hot weather would prompt a flurry of bookings. Unfortunately a lot of vacationers have decided to go abroad this year, seeking guaranteed sunshine, so take-up has been slow. 🐌 My usual practice is to phone my client about a week or so after the shoot to check all’s well with the images and marketing, and that’s when Celine shared her news.  As the forecast for that week was sunny intervals, it was decided that a revisit was needed to capture the beautiful dining room which opens into the garden and show the lifestyle available for her guests when the weather behaves. 😎 A few more images with props were taken to highlight the bar and BBQ area and the pics were added to the listing. With the warmer weather and the new images, Celine’s cottage is now attracting bookings as far ahead as September.  📆 Good things come to those who wait! What's been happening in sustainable fashion this week? ⬇️ 1) In material news Ganni A/S have a pop-up at Selfridges, London, to showcase their next-gen materials and 'fabrics of the future' initiative. The collections feature innovative materials including Bou Bags crafted with Celium ™️ by Polybion. The pop-up also features an exclusive RECUT collection which is crafted from unused fabric rolls, offcuts and unsold garments. 2) Material science company PANGAIA has extended its 'Flwrdwn' bio-based down alternative in a new outerwear line - the 'DNA Flower Warm' collection. Originally launching in 2019, Flwrdown combines wildflowers, biopolyester and aerogel to create a breathable material that acts as an alternative to down. 3) As part of their objective to become circular by 2030, Los Angeles based brand Reformation has collaborated with Ambercycle, a material science innovator, to launch a collection using their Cycora®️ recycled polyester. 4) Saturday 19th October was International Repair Day. UNIQLO held in-store clothing repair workshops and events in its Re:Uniqlo studios worldwide - showing people how to repair, maintain and upcycle their clothes. 5) German outdoor brand VAUDE partnered with outdoor company Globetrotter Ausrüstung to create an expanded repair service in certified workshops. Customers are now able to have their apparel repaired on-site. 6) Network360, who work with brands globally to transform their excess inventory into a strategic asset, are now operating an up-cycling facility in Eastern Europe where they repair and clean Grade A and B stock for new markets. 7) In recycling news, SOEX and I:Collect , a German based textile sorter in Europe, has filed for administration. The companies were leaders in recycling old clothes and shoes and were operating many clothing take-back schemes for leading fashion brands. 8) In response to upcoming EU regulations on managing textile waste, ten of the worlds largest fashion retailers including Zara, MANGO, Decathlon and Primark have signed up to a voluntary pilot scheme called 'Re-Viste' to collect, manage and sort textile and clothing waste. 9) GUESS?, Inc. has launched a recycling programme called 'Guess Again' with textile waste management platform SuperCircle. Customers can send in worn clothing from any brand and SuperCircle will manage the tech, collection, sorting, processing and disassembly of the items. 10) Last week, eBay announced the global expansion of its Circular Fashion Fund (CFF), to the U.S. and Germany The goal of the fund is to support fashion start-ups that are pioneering circular business models, such as clothing rental, repair, and recycling services. Being Seen in a Crowd of Uniformity: Making Your Mark What do a street craft market and social media have in common? You might be surprised to hear the answer is sameness. Sunday afternoon was spent wandering around a craft market in London, and I was potentially looking to buy—maybe jewellery, ceramics, or something unusual that caught my eye. But I came home empty-handed—not because the many talented stallholders had nothing that interested me, but because there was too much uniformity; nothing stood out from the crowd. There were too many people selling the same sort of products, and no one seemed interested in engaging with the many visitors wandering through. There was one stall that stood out: an embroidery artist whose work was unusual and outstanding. I stopped, asked her about her work, and she didn’t even try to sell, although I was a potential customer. A quick scroll through, let’s say, Instagram, and you might come away with the same impression. Accounts—not just B2C but B2B—that look pretty much the same, businesses that have clearly been on the same training course, posts copied/inspired by AI, content that is safe and doesn’t light a spark. And don’t get me started on those tripwire videos that make you read the caption to find out the answer to whatever question they might have posed. The takeaway here is that you need to produce something people want to buy, but you also need to be seen—for being different from your competitors, not just one of a crowd. Ready to stand out? Start by crafting unique, engaging content that showcases what sets you apart.
