Back when Adobe was putting focus on offering a competitor in the market, I was generally all in on Adobe XD it had some great features, sadly it just didn't pan out. I kinda resisted moving over to Figma for the first few years of the big UI Tools showdown. Flexbox (Auto-layout) simulation in Figma is what ended up luring me away, it became too good to ignore any longer. I still have some customers who mandate using Adobe XD, it's going to be interesting to see them have to transition their teams over to Figma in the future. No idea how long Adobe will be willing to keep the product in 'Maintenance Mode', tbh. There are certainly impacts on studios and larger organisations who face the prospect of transferring their production processes out of the Adobe's toolsets, specifically if users are leveraging Adobe XD assets in Creative Cloud sharing. There's a massive amount of effort on the horizon for any of these organisations and design teams who need to transition all their patterns or design systems across to Figma, alongside needing to consider the impacts of developer hand-off and the broader cross functional team impacts. The longer agencies and organisation hold back on developing a plan to move their teams away from Adobe XD, the more risk and potential pain they are potentially facing down the road.

Todays design tasks included: - Finalising a paid re-branding bento grid and homepage hero section test for a client. Went well, very happy, looking sexy 🔥 Moving forwards with a paid plan start of next week. - Evolving the branding of a Web3 startup, crafting 6x variants for their brand inclusive of ice glacial textures, glass and creating a brand pattern for them, addressing their concerns and utilising assets from the previous version from another agency. - Creating a bunch of fun summery AI images and product shots of cocktails - Creating a landing page that plays with shapes, bright popping colours and fun UX for a mocktail product launch SO enjoyable 🤩- Loving working with some amazing startups and teams to create such great and fulfilling work. Being a deep generalist is a superpower for starting an agency. It means you can take on 99% of the work yourself before having to eat into profits, contracting all sorts of people in when you’re just starting out. I’ve always got involved in a broad range of design, development and leadership work in every role I’ve had - which forced me to learn a lot, and fast. I didn’t want to pigeon hole myself into just one tight discipline, which is where the name Technically Creative came from. The work we do sits in the perfect intersection of creativity and technicality. Having multiple overlaypping skillsets will put you on the front foot to start a successful agency.

Designing a website for a Mental Health Hospital is a gratifying and daunting place for a design team. 👩‍💻 🧑‍💻 The approach is to design a safe digital space with easy access and non jargon filled, easy to understand language. The tone of voice overall is more driven towards taking action in a positive direction, without feeling the stigma around the topic. The visual approach balances the messaging, with tactile textures (brushstrokes that represent art therapy) to break the clinical approach that is often seen within this space. The illustration is raw and fresh with soft, calming colors (like peaches, blues, and neutrals) paired with warm, approachable imagery to evoke a sense of safety and comfort. The ease of making that first connect is enhanced by a prominently displayed emergency helpline and whats app chat option for immediate assistance, to ease things around the time of crisis. Overall it is an aesthetically designed, hard working website that positions the hospital as a trusted and compassionate leader in mental healthcare space. Think about the last time an app or website made you feel lost or misunderstood. We’ve all been there: trying to complete a simple task online only to feel our patience slipping away with unsure mouse clicks, buttons that are misleading, or a menu that is confusing. Bad UX isn’t just an inconvenience—it’s frustrating, time-consuming, and, at times, enough to make us give up entirely. That moment of exasperation isn’t just a user problem; it’s a business problem. In my recent blog post, I shared why these experiences matter to your business and how the true costs of bad UX go far beyond just user annoyance. Poor UX design leads to missed business opportunities and even damage brand reputation. It’s been a year since I made the decision to switch from tech into design and there is no regret whatsoever in it. I’ve been saying it since the beginning that I don’t regret it and I get it - it’s far too boring and repetitive. Which is fine, the point I have been making is - Choosing what you want, and having faith that you’ll get it, will never be a bad decision (unless it comes with a lot of negative consequences). Nevertheless here a few things I wished somebody had told me when I switched into design - - Design is really vast, and you need to be a Jack of all trades, if you are designer in India. - As you grow as a designer, you’ll have to be specific with your skills (mostly that cater to a wider array of clients and companies). - You will fail, a lot. And that’s okay. Maybe because the best of ideas would come out of those failures. - Network, network, network. You quite really don’t know, when and where you’ll need them! - Creativity needs a peaceful mind. Stress will only result in bad results. - Be foolish, be hungry. So yeah that’s a summary. Also nobody told me that getting Coldplay tickets would give me my JEE rank flashbacks. 😓 #design

Thanks for sharing, Laura Baker; so true! I don't think we should drop "design," but we should break the design bubble beyond egos and awards (I know, we all love awards...). Let's be humble taking responsibility for the commercial side of our craft: after all, we are paid for that; otherwise, let's expose ourselves in museums and galleries. Design should engage people, which is simply all about the ongoing interactions between brands and people. So, building on your suggestions: — 99% of design is research, data, insights, and cultural aesthetics. — But it will spark only because of that 1% of the brilliant creative big idea. — Don't forget the technicalities of all the channels and touchpoints, not stopping at just shiny mockups in a presentation deck. — There is no digital. All is digital, newspapers included. — Design for the overall perception and emotional connections (brand value, anyone?). — Even good design cannot save bad products, bad services, and bad customer experiences. — Be authentically part of the community we want to engage with before imposing our thinking. — Design to meet people's needs and expectations. It is better to anticipate them. It is excellent to create them. — All of that, beautifully designed!
