🎬 Great webinar yesterday on The Rebirth of Industrial Policy (I'll post the link to the recording in the comments when it's available). Oliver Jones and Megan Glover did a superb job discussing a hugely important theme. 💲💲💲 New industrial policies are directing trillions of dollars of capital. That presents opportunities and risks that investors like us must stay on top of developments. 👁 Industrial policy's failings and successes are often misrepresented so it’s important to apply a critical eye, learning from a rich history. 🌎 Alexander Hamilton, of catchy musical fame, wrote an 80-plus page dossier on industrial policy in 1791. 233 years of scholarship since his paper was published has, remarkably, confirmed his early observations: that policy that supports dominant players in already established industries is a zero-sum gain at best (probably much worse) particularly if it involves protectionism. 📈 But policies that help new industries evolve, particularly if they subsidise productive research and development, can be a positive-sum game. ↪ When we select companies for your portfolios we’re looking for firms with a track record of making highly productive investments, improving their earnings resilience by developing new ways of working or the products of tomorrow. The new Labour government has plenty to look at and one area they need to focus on currently is to simplify ISA rules in a bid to bolster the UK equity market and attract more investment in British stocks. Broker AJ Bell advocates for a "radical" overhaul of ISAs, proposing a single product that combines different ISA types and suggests raising the overall ISA allowance to £25,000. Michael Summersgill, CEO of AJ Bell, believes these changes would streamline long-term investing. AJ Bell also recommends eliminating stamp duty on UK investments to incentivise investing in UK assets. Diversification of portfolios and the rise of passive investing have contributed to significant outflows from UK equity funds, with retail investors withdrawing nearly £55 billion since 2016, as noted by the Investment Association. In contrast, US and global funds have seen substantial inflows, with North American and global funds attracting £7.8 billion and £7.58 billion respectively in the first half of 2024, according to Calastone. London Stock Exchange-listed companies are currently more affordably priced than their US counterparts, suggesting a favorable investment opportunity. Positive UK economic indicators, a shifting international perception, and potential factors like improved European political stability and a stronger sterling could further enhance the UK equity market, according to Michael Brown, chief investment officer at Martin Currie. Budget Flash – Is the EIS & VCT Industry Too Complacent Regarding The Chancellor? A few weeks before the UK election in 2019, I was speaking at an Intelligent Partnership EIS Forum involving eight EIS fund managers, presenting to a group of about forty wealth manager and IFA groups. During the Q&A session, one participant asked the panel of fund managers whether they believed that the election of Jeremy Corbyn would lead to the end of EIS and VCT tax reliefs. With only one exception, they were unanimous in pouring cold water on this suggestion. Too many jobs would be lost; the UK needed investment in early-stage life sciences, fintech, blockchain technology, AI, and robotics; the creative fulcrum of entrepreneurial Britian would be sacrificed etc. All logical and well-reasoned arguments. Symvan was the exception that day and argued that these schemes would be amongst the first to go for the very simple reason that the Corbyn/McDonnell axis viewed the world through an essentially post-Marxist prism and simply saw such schemes as ‘tax breaks for rich guys.’ The private sector has little or no role in generating economic growth when you remove yourself sufficiently from reality. That intellectual depravity does not exist with the current government, but expediency potentially calls the wolf to the door nonetheless. And so Martin Vander Meyer offers a warning in a worryingly prescient article in this week’s Spectator in which he argues that, although the Chancellor has emphatically denied that she wishes to punish early-stage companies in the UK, she may have to “scrape the bottom of the bin” and punish the sector as the Treasury and the OBR have removed Labour’s delusions about what the costs of its mooted tax rises will mean for the UK economy. If the furious lobbying ahead of Wednesday’s budget has taught us anything, it is that the power of the unions is forcing the Chancellor to make sub-optimal decisions and the UK as a whole will bear the cost. Reduce waiting lists. These three words are certain to appear in multiple election manifestos – however, often the detail is lacking in terms of how we can make it happen. I believe the key to reducing the strain and burden on our NHS is tech. Digital solutions enable us to: 1. Prevent disease to reduce demand. Tech can empower people to make changes to live happier, healthier lives, and enables early diagnosis (increasing through AI). 2. Be more efficient when demand is present. Tech is central to this, and solutions are most effective when devolved to local decision-making, where the needs of the community are more closely understood. I’d be interested to hear other people’s thoughts on what the detail behind the promises from our prospective governments needs to be.
