  • Inductively Couple Plasma using LC Oscillator

The project’s focus has been on developing a new generation of low powered electric propulsion systems for small spacecraft. These systems are in form of plasma thrusters, not only due to their increased efficiency but also mainly due to the significantly lower complexity level with respect to ion thrusters, for example.

The project’s focus has been on developing a new generation of low powered electric propulsion systems for small spacecraft. These systems are in form of plasma thrusters, not only due to their increased efficiency but also mainly due to the significantly lower complexity level with respect to ion thrusters, for example.
Plasma physics is the fundamental cornerstone to understanding how the propulsion system is supposed to be created and sustained. Thus, the main prerogative was to thoroughly research the principles of Plasma theory. In order to analyse the feasibility of creating such a system would be, an LC self-oscillating circuit was implemented and tested in breadboard configuration. The created circuit is responsible for coupling to a separate plasma source and, in turn, creating and sustaining plasma through inductive coupling.

Ultimately, an increase in plasma density within the work coil of factor 9.1 was achieved, showing the capability of an LC oscillator to succeed in inductively coupling to an existing plasma source and ionizing further gas (Argon) atoms. The results present inductively coupled plasma sources as a viable option for propulsion at low power levels and thus provide the foundation for further research in such systems.
