Globally announced sustainable aviation fuel production capacity significantly increased last year, driven by regulatory developments such as #ReFuelEU, the new UK SAF mandate and incentives to support SAF uptake in the US. Additionally, other countries, particularly in Asia, are looking to introduce mandates and targets for production, leading SAF to increasingly be seen as a global tradeable commodity with emerging trade corridors involving the US, SE Asia, Europe and South America, says SkyNRG’s latest annual SAF Market Outlook. Voluntary demand signals have also continued to strengthen, with multiple airlines, cargo companies and corporates setting ambitious SAF targets. Chinese flying taxi sector claims global lead thanks to regulatory support Shanghai’s AutoFlight wins approval for unmanned aircraft in nascent market forecast to be worth $1.5tn a year by 2040 A Shanghai flying taxi company says that China’s “low altitude” industry is edging ahead of western rivals, thanks to more supportive regulators, technological breakthroughs and cut-throat competition in the Chinese logistics sector. The total market created by electric vertical take-off and landing, or eVTOL, aircraft is forecast to be worth $1.5tn a year by 2040 in a base-case assessment by Morgan Stanley analysts, with potential customers across airlines, logistics, emergency services, agriculture, tourism and security operations. China’s AutoFlight Group won airworthiness certification from the CAAC - Civil Aviation Administration of China in late March for the design and parts for its unmanned CarryAll aircraft — a global first for an #eVTOL weighing more than 1 tonne being cleared by regulators. Kellen Xie, AutoFlight vice-president, said that while the company is also seeking similar approvals in Europe, the CAAC has been “quite supportive” of the new industry. “They work longer hours . . . they are determined to actually speed up the process of bringing this new technology into reality,” he said. EVTOL aircraft take off vertically, like helicopters, but then transition into fixed-wing mode for travelling at higher speeds, offering faster and more efficient transport than ground-based options. Analysts point to a labyrinth of regulatory and safety hurdles, but supporters say the technology could fundamentally reshape how humans travel and freight is moved, in a level of disruption akin to the introduction of mass-market cars and commercial airlines. Most eVTOL aircraft are still in the testing stages and vary widely in terms of how fast and high they can fly and how much weight they can carry. Can you believe it's May? Our fifth issue of the year is out this week. The cover story looks at the cost of decarbonising international aviation, and the extra fees that airline customers will have to pay to reduce global aviation emissions, including in Malaysia. Decarbonising, whether it's by purchasing more efficient equipment, using sustainable aviation fuel or purchasing carbon credits come at a cost, and consumers will soon have to pay for the true cost of activities like flying. It's interesting to see how global aviation players have come together through the Corsia scheme to cap emissions from international travel through an elaborate plan. The story also touches on the dearth of Corsia-eligible carbon credits in Malaysia, and what are the bottlenecks. EU regulators have opened an investigation of 20 airlines over their potentially “misleading greenwashing practices”, including the claimed benefits of offsetting emissions from flying. The European Commission said on Tuesday that it had written to the airlines and to national consumer protection authorities “identifying several types of potentially misleading green claims”. The airlines were not named, but the national regulators involved are Belgian, Dutch, Norwegian and Spanish. The regulators’ concerns centre on claims that the carbon emissions from flying can be offset either through investments in environmental projects or the use of more sustainable jet fuels, which still emit carbon when they are burnt but are less polluting than the kerosene that is currently used. “The airlines are yet to clarify whether such claims can be substantiated based on sound scientific evidence,” the commission said. Industry body Airlines for Europe (A4E)said its members “recognise the importance of clear, transparent information about sustainability and our efforts towards achieving net zero carbon emissions”. It said it was “particularly concerned” about the questions over sustainable aviation fuels, which it said have been “supported and endorsed” by the EU. “The science supports that this is a more sustainable alternative to regular jet fuel,” it added.   #SustainableAviation #Airlines #GreenWashing

Investment in scaling up global production of renewable fuels in the pursuit of the aviation industry’s Net Zero emissions target was at the forefront of discussions at this year’s Aviation Carbon conference in London, reports Mark Pilling for GreenAir News. With Europe introducing from January sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) blending mandates, as well as monitoring requirements on aircraft non-CO2 impacts, industry concerns were raised over the complexity and cost of new regulations facing airlines. Marie Owens Thomsen, SVP Sustainability and Chief Economist at the International Air Transport Association (IATA), criticised fossil fuel subsidies and the lack of investment by oil majors in the energy transition. Dominant industry #narratives often stand in the way of the systemic change needed to drive #Europe towards a more sustainable aviation industry. Today at the Innovation Zero 2024 show our Director of Business & Investor Engagement, Emily Hickson, spoke on a panel discussing Sustainable Aviation Fuels (#SAF). As the #civilsociety member of the panel, she put forward four challenges to the #industry narrative when it comes to aviation #decarbonisation. Pace: The UK and EU mandates are setting the pace, however #airlines and fuel distributors are worried about meeting them. This could be due to a lack of supply. Fuel suppliers need offtake agreements, at an attractive price (one that includes a hefty #greenpremium) in order to get the final #investment decision to build plants that will create these fuels. A challenge, but one we can overcome through collaboration. Price: The #aviation industry purports its volatility, thin margins and centrality to GDP as reasons it can’t afford to pay higher costs for SAF. However, volatility also means the industry has good years too. Last year, IAG made €3.5 billion in operating profits. Giving credit where it's due, they announced new offtakes for e-fuels with Twelve. But overall, we need to challenge the notion that the industry cannot afford this transition. Timeline on #zeroemission flight: SAF can’t get us to net-zero alone, therefore we need to collectively push for stronger regulation and #innovation to get us to a future of electric and hydrogen flights sooner. Demand: An unpopular topic. But we must be bolder if we are to stay on track for a net-zero aviation industry, starting by tackling the excess of the super-rich, including higher taxes on private jets to curb their emissions. The collective aspirational global goal agreed by governments six months ago to reduce CO2 emissions in international aviation by 2030 through the use of sustainable aviation fuels and lower carbon fuels is impossible to achieve or at best highly ambitious, said Willie Walsh, Director General of International Air Transport Association (IATA) at the association’s AGM in #Dubai, hosted by Emirates, reports Christopher Surgenor for GreenAir News. He also rejected a claim by a UAE government representative that IATA, along with other industry stakeholders, had pushed for the target at ICAO’s third Conference on Aviation and Alternative Fuels (CAAF/3) held last November, also in Dubai. Achieving the target required governments to deliver concrete measures to facilitate the exponential ramp-up of SAF they were calling for, said Walsh. He said that in the past, the industry had been rightly criticised for setting environmental targets that it could not and did not achieve. ✈ The Sustainable Aviation Fuel (Revenue Support Mechanism) Bill in the King's Speech is a step forward for the decarbonisation of aviation and a credit to everyone who has worked so hard to advocate for accelerating a UK SAF industry including colleagues at International Airlines Group (IAG) and British Airways, as well as many others. The industry has been asking for government to back a mechanism to give producers the confidence to invest in SAF - it's what producers have told us they need. It's also recognition that in decarbonisation, we must back solutions that cover all industries. It's not just renewable electrons that will get us to net zero. We need lower carbon fuels too, for some sectors. ✈️Liquid Hydrogen at Airports to Enable Decarbonisation✈️ The urge to decarbonise our economy and to develop Europe’s energy independence is leading to a major trend of hydrogen for mobility and stationary applications. Hydrogen will also be a solution to decarbonise short- and medium-haul aviation and will be crucial for the advancement of low-carbon aviation operations. “The GOLIAT (Ground Operations of LIquid hydrogen AircrafT)” project will receive funding of €10.8 million from the EU’ Horizon Europe Framework Programme via CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency. The project duration is four years and it will demonstrate how high-flow liquid hydrogen (#LH2) handling and refuelling technologies can be developed and used safely and reliably for airport operations. The GOLIAT consortium consists of 10 partners from eight countries: Airbus (France, Germany, UK), Chart Industries, Inc. (Czech Republic, Italy), TU Delft | Aerospace Engineering (Netherlands), Leibniz Universität Hannover (Germany), Royal Schiphol Group (Netherlands), Rotterdam The Hague Airport (Netherlands), VINCI Airports (France, Portugal), Stuttgart Airport (Germany), H2FLY (Germany), and Budapest Airport (Hungary). The group will support the aviation industry’s adoption of LH2 transportation and energy storage solutions by: 🔹Developing and demonstrating LH2 refuelling technologies scaled-up for future large commercial aircraft; 🔹Demonstrating small-scale LH2 aircraft ground operations at airports; 🔹Developing the standardisation and certification framework for future LH2 operations; 🔹Assessing the sizing and economics of the hydrogen value chains for airports. As a clean and efficient fuel, LH2 offers a promising solution for reducing the greenhouse gas emissions associated with airport operations and their dependence on fossil fuels.
