Weather systems are complex and classical compute methods struggle to capture system intricacies. Their events are often unpredictable, making it hard to prepare for or mitigate their effects. For perspective, flooding cost the UK £333 million in economic losses between Nov 2019 and March 2020. 🌧 Therefore, forecasting precipitation is vital to businesses and industries worldwide who need to leverage forecasting solutions to optimise operations and proactively manage risks associated with weather-related impacts. In our recent case study, Standard Chartered and USRA were interested in exploring the potential of a flexible hybrid quantum-classical algorithm. They set out to build a HQRC that has adjustable structure to fit requirements of current hardware, and test it on low-dimensional proxy problems related to weather/climate. Is it really feasible to reach gigatonne-scale CO2 storage by 2050? A comprehensive research paper by a research team from Imperial College London published in Nature, disputes the projections in the 6th Assessment Report by IPCC. In short, IPCC projects subsurface carbon storage at rates of 1 – 30 GtCO2 per year by 2050. When scrutinized with technological constraints from both geology and scale-up rate in mind, the maximum projections drop to 16 GtCO2 per year (assuming the US contributes 60%). When policy and roadmaps are taken into account, the projection further plummets to 5-6 GtCO2 per year. The study indicates a potential large-scale overestimate by the IPCC, the results are particularly exaggerated in the APAC region, namely China, South Korea and Indonesia. It is important to have adequate projections of CO2 storage potential because that directly impacts the targets and investment in CO2 avoidance, and more specifically efficiency - burying our problems seemed like an easy alternative to improving efficiency and avoidance. #decarbonization #GHGemissions #RumenPresents

Recent research from British Antarctic Survey and CPOM shows record low Antarctic sea ice is four times more likely with climate change. Last year (2023) winter Antarctic sea ice measured at its lowest since 1978 when satellite records began. Using the CMIP6 data set (climate dataset), BAS and CPOM researchers investigated this sea ice loss, including data from 18 different climate models in order to understand the likelihood of this level of sea ice loss, and its relationship to climate change. The research, led by Rachel Diamond (Cambridge University/BAS) shows that this type of event would be a one-in-a-2000-year event without climate change. Using the most up-to-date models showed that this type of decline in sea is four times more likely (a one-in-a-500 year event), suggesting that climate change played a significant role, however this type of event still remains unlikely. Wind generation hit a record high share of 28.1 per cent of electricity generation (up from 0.3 per cent in 2000), and solar also was a new record share, 4.7 per cent. Generation from fossil fuels fell to a new low of 36.7 per cent, but generation from gas remained the principal form of UK generation at 34.7 per cent, down from 39.3 per cent in 2000. Coal generation was a record low with a share of 1.3 per cent, down from 31.8 per cent in 2000. ·      Despite significant progress in renewable generation, the dominance of fossil fuels – particularly amongst consumers for transport and heating but also gas for electricity generation ·      UK energy production dropped to a new record low, down 8 per cent on 2022. Oil production is at a record 21st century low, down 11 per cent on last year and 36 per cent on 2019, and gas production is at a near record low as output from the UK’s mature continental shelf continues to decline. Nuclear output also hit a record 21st century low down 15 per cent due to plant closures and maintenance outages as the fleet continues to age. ·      Over the longer term, indigenous energy production has decreased from 289 million tonnes of oil equivalent (mtoe) in 2000 to 101 mtoe in 2023, a fall of 65 per cent as falls in fossil fuels (down 72 per cent since 2000) and nuclear output (down 55 per cent from 2000) outstripped the rise in renewable production. ·      Overall energy demand dropped to levels last seen in the 1950s due to sustained high temperatures (a record in 2022 and a near record in 2023) and high energy and other prices. ·      Much like production, energy demand has dropped over time, and is down 32 per cent on 2000 falling to 163 mtoe from 246 mtoe in 2000. Final consumption from households is down 31 per cent since 2000 as improvements in energy efficiency offset the larger population, although the warm weather and higher energy and other prices will have played a part in the sharp reduction seen in the last two years. ·      Imports and exports of energy fell on 2022, though exports fell more sharply resulting in increased import dependency.

There have been some nice scientific studies, such as Andrew Stout's work on engineering autocrine FGFsignalling in bovine satellite cells, and various media reports of various techno-economic advancements. But there is unlikely to be a silver bullet and following a multi-pronged approach seems sensible. Matching not only the right cells with the right media. But the right cells with the right growth factors and an appropriate scale-up technology. Unlike many other companies involved in the space we intend to share as many of our findings as we can to help enable the space. In this application note (appnote embedded in page below), in collaboration with Qkine, we examined the hypothesis that species-specific growth factors would show differential impacts on production-relevant cell lines. I'm very pleased to share a new #blog post: A cautionary tale on utilising and deploying machine learning techniques on smart meter data. The rapid decarbonisation of the electricity networks will require implementation of innovative technologies and data-driven methodologies from transmission to distribution level, all the way down to the household level. However, as we get down to the final feeder which feeds electricity to our homes, the demand data starts to look much more spikey and variable. This presents some unique challenges which do not occur when we look at the national level, or even regionally. One such challenge is the "double penalty effect", which makes it very difficult to create forecasts and accurately evaluate them with traditional techniques. 🚨 UK's Renewable Energy Milestone: Wind Power Outpaces Gas! 🌍⚡ 📊💨 In the first quarter of this year, renewable electricity generation made up an impressive 50.9% of total electricity generation, nearly matching the record from late 2023. For the second consecutive quarter, wind power outperformed gas, despite some operational outages. While overall energy consumption remained stable compared to last year, household energy use rose by 3.1%, breaking a trend of declining consumption due to high energy prices since Summer 2022. On the flip side, transport demand dropped by 1.7%, with diesel use down, but petrol and aviation fuel use up. However, energy production fell by 8.9%, driven by continued low oil output and a significant 16% drop in nuclear power due to maintenance and outages. 📉 Meanwhile, electricity imports hit a new high, with the UK’s import dependency rising to 44.4% 💡 Below is the recent Statistical Release for 2024. This case study - focusing on a large methane leak near Cheltenham, identified by National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO) researchers in 2023 - demonstrated for the first time, a UK methane emission being detected from space and validated by ground-based surveys to reduce fugitive methane emissions. New research published last week in the journal Nature Geoscience reveals that nature has devised a way to produce oxygen without the involvement of plants. If you put a standard AA battery into saltwater, you’ll observe bubbles and hear a fizz—that’s the generation of hydrogen and oxygen gases as the electricity splits water molecules, a process known as electrolysis. The researchers suspected the same thing was happening in the deep ocean, thanks to polymetallic nodules on the deep ocean floor. The very nodules that perform this oxygen-generating alchemy are also a target for deep sea mining companies due to their richness in rare earth metals. Deep-sea mining has generated an immense backlash. So far, 27 countries and 52 corporations have pledged support for a moratorium on deep sea mining. More than 800 scientists and policy experts have petitioned against the practice. A 2013 survey found that half of documented megafauna species were present only on the nodules. The deep sea remains a poorly studied region for biodiversity, with up to two thirds of its dwellers still unknown to science. Carbon Mapper's Tanager-1 #satellite is now publishing data on #methaneleaks and #carbonemissions around the world, like a diamond in the sky. #DaveMatthewsBand quotes aside, the real question here is: what will the leak-shaming actually look like? Who will take Tanager-1's data and use it to create conditions that actually make mitigation preferable to emitters? Knowledge without action is useless. Via it's different guises (frequency, fidelity and coverage), it's certain to be used: 1. in an operational #assetmanagement context - maximising #biogas/#biomethane revenues and profits; 2. as part of deeper, granular #ESG disclosures - minimising and shining a light on #greenwashing; 3. as a due diligence assessment tool across the #investment and #sustainablefinance landscape - answering: to what extent is a company investable?; and 4. through stronger independence in #governance and #regulation - as a departure from pure and current-day self-reporting. bring it on.

#RES_Focus Title：Road Traffic Emissions Lead to Much Enhanced New Particle Formation through Increased Growth Rates Authors：James Brean Alex Rowell, David Beddows, Kay Weinhold, Peter Mettke, Maik Merkel, Thomas Tuch, Matti Rissanen, Miikka Dal Maso, Avinash Kumar, Shawon Barua, Siddharth Iyer, Anette Karppinen, Alfred Wiedensohler, Zongbo Shi, and Roy M. Harrison Abstract: New particle formation (NPF) is a major source of atmospheric aerosol particles, including cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), by number globally. Previous research has highlighted that NPF is less frequent but more intense at roadsides compared to urban background. Here, we closely examine NPF at both background and roadside sites in urban Central Europe. We show that the concentration of oxygenated organic molecules (OOMs) is greater at the roadside, and the condensation of OOMs along with sulfuric acid onto new particles is sufficient to explain the growth at both sites. We identify a hitherto unreported traffic-related OOM source contributing 29% and 16% to total OOMs at the roadside and background, respectively. Critically, this hitherto undiscovered OOM source is an essential component of urban NPF. Without their contribution to growth rates and the subsequent enhancements to particle survival, the number of >50 nm particles produced by NPF would be reduced by a factor of 21 at the roadside site. Recently, I got to experiment on developing a Text vectorisation service for a continuous inflow of Tickets text data. We used Celery and E5 model to test the performance and tried to optimise on throughput.
