I'm Joining In Professional Development (InPD), the Institute of Professional Development for The Neurodiversity at Work Conference 2024. Why? You find venues, and facilitate clinical wetlab services? Well, in the UK, approximately 1 in 7 people are neurodivergent. However, despite a growing global recognition, many workplaces still struggle to support neurodiverse professionals. With this in mind, I want to gain expert insights into creating a culture that supports neurodiverse employees and clients. This event to me, is not only going to give me further exploration in how managers and team leaders can adapt their leadership styles to effectively support and empower neurodiverse team members, as well as discussing strategies for implementing inclusive recruitment and hiring practices to attract and retain neurodiverse talent. This enables me and my team to support our clients with their meetings, training, events and conferences. The UK's recent warm weather has me re-reading an article in the American Psychological Association's member magazine 'Monitor on Psychology' entitled, "How heat affects the mind". Yes, continuous or extreme exposure to heat causes hyperthermia and 10-28% of those experience persistent brain damage and in less extreme heat existing mental health symptoms are exacerbated. However, of more regular use, lower exposure heat stress also creates aggression in individuals which generates responsive aggression in others - simply put, arguments are more common when people are hot. Intuitively, we know this, but in the workplace this means that conflict is more likely during the summer months. Additionally, exposure to heat stress is linked to a reduction in cognition. So, problem solving and collaboration are more difficult or less productive during the summer months and could even lead to the aforementioned conflict. Like my last post, these are real-world examples where self-awareness, emotional intelligence and adaptability are critical in real life to reduce future organisational issues in the workplace. Simply recognising the risk of warm weather, being more connected to people and then consciously choosing when to have combative or collaborative discussions could make all the difference.

🌟 The Impact of Sickness Levels on the UK Workforce 🌟 📊 The 23rd annual CIPD Health and Wellbeing at Work report reveals that the UK's sickness absence rate has soared to its highest in over a decade. Employees are now absent for an average of 7.8 days per year, marking a significant rise from the pre-pandemic average of 5.8 days. An estimated 18 million workdays are lost each year due to poor mental health. 🔴The Impact: Productivity: Prolonged absences diminish overall productivity and output. Financial Costs: Sick pay, temporary staffing, and decreased output add to financial pressures. Operational Challenges: Absence management demands administrative work and affects team dynamics. 🔴The Solution: Robust Mental Health Support Frameworks: Organisations need to implement comprehensive frameworks to support mental health at all levels. One-on-one Support: Provide confidential counselling, therapy, and coaching services to employees struggling with stress, anxiety, or other mental health concerns. Training and Awareness: Develop a mutual understanding of personal and collective challenges and barriers, and support each other as a team. Employee Engagement: Employees with higher engagement levels tend to have better mental health. Encourage a positive work environment, open communication, recognition of achievements, and employee participation in decision-making. Mental Health Awareness Promotion: Communicate regularly about mental health and wellbeing. Host workshops, webinars, and campaigns to destigmatize mental health issues and encourage seeking assistance when necessary. Leadership Commitment: It's crucial for senior leaders to advocate for mental health. They should set an example, prioritise self-care, and promote a healthy work-life balance.
