I am pleased to have supported FOE US in publishing the report, Financing for Biodiverse Futures? Key Considerations for Financial Institutions to Stop and Reverse Biodiversity Loss as #COP16 kicked off in mid-October 2024. The report explains how #banks and #financiers must align with the #GBF and develop a #biodiversity plan to stop and reverse biodiversity loss, while also protecting #IndigenousPeoples and #affectedcommunities and upholding climate-related commitments. In addition to how banks and financiers can develop an effective biodiversity plan, the report outlines how stopping and reversing biodiversity loss should be the aim of a credible and comprehensive biodiversity plan, in line with the GBF, and should include the use of exclusionary areas, per the Banks & Biodiversity Initiative so that critical ecosystems and communities are protected from harmful financing. https://lnkd.in/dUY3KPTC

$250 billion per year in #ClimateFinance by 2035 as proposed in the latest #COP29Baku draft is woefully inadequate. The #Adaptation Gap Report shows $400 billion is needed annually just for adaptation alone. This shortfall jeopardise our planet’s future. The draft also Invites developing country parties to make additional contributions. The world deserves real ambition, not diluted responsibility.

Our CEO Rory Sullivan has written an article for SDG Action arguing that scaling up private climate finance requires governments and agencies to fully understand the financial characteristics of the activities and entities that need to be supported. He pays particular attention to emerging markets and to adaptation, the two areas that are most poorly served by private finance. "However, the reality is that most adaptation measures are not that attractive to private investment. While there are often clear economic or societal reasons to support such investments, it is often the case that relatively few of the benefits from adaptation finance accrue directly to the entity providing the investment. The first in-person authors' and Advisory Board meeting of the #RDR2025, Rural Development Report 2025, titled ''Financing for Rural Transformation'' occurred in #Rome this week. On behalf of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) as the lead agency, we welcomed the entire team and we spent it discussing, writing and sharing. We are getting ready for launch just before the #FFD summit in Spain in July 2025 (#Financing for Development). So watch this space. Some key things already important/emerging: 1. Despite 3.5 billion (47%) people living in rural areas today, there is almost no data on rural people and rural areas. In 2050, this number will still be large (3 billion!) 2. Despite 80% of the poor (AND 80% of the extremely poor) living in #rural areas, we dont know what we need in terms of financing for basic needs (or for #SDGs). Is this millions or billions or trillions? (Any guesses?) 3. What we dont measure, we dont treasure. 4. So far, a large part of development thinking, has positioned rural areas as subservient to urban ones (the main argument being economies of scale/aggregation). We dont, have any idea what an empowered, strong, thriving rural transformation, could look like. 5. That argument changes dramatically, if we consider that with disaggregated, high frequency, data we can use the high fragmentation, to create ''e-scale economies'': Billions of data points representing lots of agents, helps us hedge, invest, and insure better at the meso/meta level. Suddenly, its actually important to have lots of small disaggregated farms and businesses rather than large ones. Small becomes truly beautiful. 6. Rural areas can be an #investment opportunity, BECAUSE, they have fewer #stranded assets, and there is the opportunity of creating new markets. 7. Rural areas represent the opportunity to re-imagine our future! Rural transformation means areas are PERC (Prosperous, Equitable, Resilient and Connected). This is awesome news! As I've seen through some recent research the Zero Emissions Innovation Centre is working on with Kookai Chaimahawong and Hitoishi Chakma from UBC Sauder's Centre for Climate and Business Solutions (CCBS), the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is a backbone to so much of corporate reporting in BC. Knowing that the GRI is now going to integrate with recommendations from TNFD is a fantastic step toward capturing the full impacts of corporates on nature - and a world where that can someday be neutral, or net-positive.

GAIA Asia Pacific is proud to share this new research led by Recourse which we have co-published along with other organizations. This study reveals that MDB's climate finance is ploughing back to rich countries and whatever little money there is for other regions -- they are going to problematic projects including greenhouse gas-emitting and highly polluting waste-to-energy plants, large-scale hydropower, mining for critical minerals, hydrogen, and ‘captive coal’ for industry – mainly in the form of loans (70%), not grants (4%), adding to the burden of already debt-distressed countries. A case highlighted in this report is Greater Malé Waste-to-Energy Project in the Maldives classed as 94-100% climate finance by the Asian Development Bank (ADB)) and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). In addition to pumping out hazardous fumes and greenhouse gases,(1) the project has caused a net increase of waste as the parliament had to legalise waste importation to feed the plant. In addition, we have also highlighted the fundamental gaps in climate finance methodology on financing "only for the organics portion of the wastestream" as feedstock for WTE incinerators. Given that biogenic wastestreams are carbon-intensive especially when these materials are sourced from already dying ecosystems and that waste is hardly segregated to begin with in developing countries -- this climate finance methodology merely supports a series of scams we have seen in carbon credit mechanisms. When financing in the waste sector, MDBs need to stop financing WTE incinerators and prioritize the higher options in the waste hierarchy which not only reduces GHG emissions but also improves environmental, economic, social, political and institutional benefits. #COP29 Afrah Ismail GAIA Asia Pacific

There are multiple stories to be told about adaptation finance. The first is that, despite mounting climate impacts, investments in adaptation are much lower than needed. But at the same time, what we call “adaptation finance” is only a fraction of what is needed to make countries, communities, and people more resilient. In this blog post, we claim that reducing vulnerability to climate impacts and building resilience requires three things: more rapid development, more resilient development, and targeted adaptation interventions. Climate finance numbers tend to only capture the latter, while countries need to achieve all three for good adaptation with the first two particularly important for the world’s poorest countries. How does the picture change when we take this broader perspective on adaptation and resilience? What priorities do emerge? One key idea is that, even with more adaptation finance, we will never be able to protect populations and economies if development investments are insufficient or if they continue to create new risks and vulnerabilities because they do not take future climate conditions into account. Central banks, regulators and supervisors are urged to intervene in main drivers of nature loss and climate change alongside governments. WWF´s Greening Financial Regulation Initiative launches its first Introductory Deforestation and Conversion Guide for central banks, financial regulators, and supervisors. Deforestation and conversion of forests and other ecosystems are an important cause of nature and climate-related risks that can lead to the collapse of entire financial systems. But major finance keeps flowing towards the main driver of deforestation: agricultural expansion. To fulfill their mandate on financial and price stability, CBFRS need to address deforestation and conversion using the existing tools they have and modulate financial resources fuelling activities that cause deforestation and conversion. International Monetary Fund We launched today a new tool to help countries assess long-term fiscal risks from climate change. Q-CRAFT (Quantitative Climate Risk Assessment Fiscal Tool) helps countries understand and manage climate-related fiscal risks through quantitative, data-driven insights. The tool analyzes how different climate scenarios impact economic growth and fiscal sustainability over the long term. So how do we conceive / envisage / champion climate action on this residual domain of risk? And what should L&D policy reasoning be established?
