NCA Candidates - this post is for you. This is long overdue and something I come across on a daily basis, so hopefully this will clear up the landscape for those pursuing NCAs who are looking to work with recruiters to find legal jobs. The fact of the matter is - a lot of recruiters won't be able to help place you in your first legal role. You'll likely have to find it yourself, and the second legal move is when you'll become someone far easier to work with when it comes to matching the pre-requisites outlined by the law firms recruiters work with. Why can it be difficult to place NCA candidates as a recruiter? See below: 💥 Experience Disparity: NCA candidates may have gained their legal education and initial work experience in a different jurisdiction, which could lead to questions about their familiarity with Canadian law and legal practice norms. 💥 Additional Requirements: NCA candidates typically have to complete additional exams or coursework to qualify for Canadian legal practice. Employers might see this as an additional hurdle or uncertainty compared to candidates who have completed a recognized law degree program. 💥 Perceived Risk: Employers might perceive NCA candidates as riskier hires due to uncertainties about their legal education and experience, especially if they lack direct experience in Canadian law firms or legal settings. NOTE: these perceptions can vary widely depending on the employer/law firm, the specific job role, and the candidate's individual qualifications and experiences. We always want clients and candidates to feel they have been through a robust interview process covering all queries and leaving with the information needed to make a decision come offer stage - but it is important to make the process quick and comprehensive. One thing I have found recently throughout recruitment processes is the importance for lawyers to keep an up to date CV, so I wrote an article to explain further. By regularly re-visiting your resume, not only can you capitalise on new opportunities at a greater speed, but the quality of the CV increases which can have further knock on benefits.
