In September I certified, alongside another colleague, in becoming an Ambassador for Workplace Cancer Support The key takeaways from the course include; ·        Knowing what to say ·        Knowing how to listen ·        Signposting for further support My biggest takeaway from the course was how to approach a conversation with empathy instead of sympathy – it sounds common sense, but it is harder than you think. Our natural reaction as a human being is to try to make someone feel better by quickly expressing that we care but it is a lot more meaningful to *understand* how someone feels, and imagine yourself in their place and let support come from that perspective. From deep-diving examples of sympathetic responses versus empathetic responses, and truly understanding the difference, we can strive to make any interaction with others more impactful Don’t hesitate to reach out if you want any more information on this topic as I feel that this has been my biggest learning point from 2024 #Unit4 #wellbeing #insideUnit4

Congratulations to those receiving their GCSE results today! (And to those parents who have undoubtedly supported the young adults in their studies 📚) No matter the results, this is the start of a journey to find that career path that makes the best use of the next generations' skills and passions. Looking ahead to higher education, there are so many options to cater for any interests, so now's the time to consider what the future can hold. Following the A-level results last week, Sky News reported a huge uptick in those looking to get into the engineering and technology field. I may be biased, but there is a shortage of skills in the IT sector, and plenty of programs to train the next generation of industry leaders... As companies prepare for the FTSE Women Leaders Review, it's crucial to remember that gender equity isn't just a checkbox—it's essential for economic growth. In my recent piece for Women in Tech UK, I highlight strategies to ensure the tech sector benefits from gender-diverse talent. We must do the work to see the change.

The proportion of women working in specialist tech roles in the UK has risen gradually over five years. It's now at 21%, according to BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT' new analysis today. But this is far behind employment as a whole, where women are nearly half of the workforce. So there’s much more to be done to ensure increasing numbers continue to enter - and return to - this transformational profession. Some of our recommendations, after speaking to experts like Andrea Palmer FBCS MBA, Jo Stansfield, Charlene Hunter MBE, Julia Adamson MBE and Samantha Niblett MP include changing the culture that still exists in many areas of the sector; more support for flexible and part-time working, and making sure all teenagers get the kind digital literacy education that isn't generally available in schools right now. What about the SME’s? As a leader at a Yorkshire SME business, yesterday was a hard read with the Labour budget. Big rises in costs in light of already higher cost bases. Thinking of upskilling or considering a career change to a greener role? Now's the time for UK workers! As #COP29 brings world leaders together to address climate action, new LinkedIn data highlights the UK as a global leader in the demand for green skills. 📈 As of July 2024, 13% of UK job posts required green skills, more than double the global average of 6%. 📈 Between 2021-2024, demand for green talent in the UK grew at an average of 20% annually, with an impressive 46% surge in the past year alone. However, the supply of green talent isn’t keeping up. LinkedIn’s data shows the global green talent pool needs to double by 2050 to meet future demand. This is a pivotal moment for UK professionals, to upskill or pivot toward greener careers. The opportunities are vast, and the time to act is now.
