Are trains a viable option when you travel long distance? 🚄 Late last year we did an interview with train guru Mark Smith, founder of the famous travel site, Seat61. He sees a bright future for trains with investments in both high-speed rail and night trains to cater to the increasing demand from travellers. See link in comments, Mark is a fascinating guy and a role model when it comes to having sustained impact on an industry. Challenges that remain are; 💰 Perceived as a high-priced alternative compared to flying. ⚖ Not an equal playing field as airlines receive more subsidies. 🤷‍♀️ Complex booking process, especially for trips crossing many borders. 👨‍⚖️ Lack of adequate passenger rights in terms of cancellations. We need to talk about trains! Rail reform is coming but is it happening fast enough and is there enough focus on the needs of the business travel market? The BTA are working hard with the rail industry to have the voice of business travel heard and the BTA is also pushing the message to the new government that business travel is a huge opportunity for the rail sector. Business travel on the railways is not yet back to the pre pandemic levels and there is an obsession to just focus on getting revenues back to those 2019 levels but we say NO! The focus must be on doubling the pre pandemic levels from our sector and that's just a conservative possibility. Business travel represents a huge opportunity to grow revenue and yields from modal shift and organic growth. I’m intrigued about the how and the what are compared by the widget. It mentions utilities, and food waste, I can sort of understand taking meter readings on power use and water. I am struggling a bit on tracking food waste. I would like to see added into the algorithm distance travelled by users and their carbon footprint. Also how much the business financially benefits the local area, not just in wages but raw material purchases (food miles) and sharing of profits. Maybe a breakdown of annual or even better daily comparison of shareholders income to local income. Finally I can see this being attractive to larger operators trying to prove their credentials, what about people like us small Glamping business with 3 units.

There are lots of interesting data in the WTTC's updated Net Zero Roadmap for Travel & Tourism, which should be applauded, but it's hard to swallow the press release reporting "a significant decrease in Travel & Tourism’s carbon emissions footprint". Anyone would think tourism emissions were, er, going down. Yet the report provides a fuller picture (see below). Fascinating article in today's Travel Weekly UK reporting on (the ever-insightful) SEO Travel survey on AI generated itineraries. Advising travel businesses on this area as we do, we know that itinerary writing is a real focus for all kinds of leisure & travel businesses. Without doubt there is huge benefit to those kinds of applications of AI, but as Tom Mcloughlin and the team highlight - the practical and legal difficulties are there to see! #AI #TravelLaw
