"The vibes are good", I said to my client, after reflecting for a moment on the state of #LabVIEW within the Test and Measurement industry. Yesterday, at the Yotta Volt Ltd Tech Day in Reading, I was recounting a story to my friend Gajan Sivapathasundaram from NI (National Instruments) about a conversation I was having during one of my consulting contracts. The client hadn't worked with NI software for a few years, but they knew I was an NI Partner and former employee. Curious about how the Emerson buyout had affected NI and the investment in LabVIEW, they asked if I knew anything about the life expectancy of the product. It was a question I have been asked many times by different engineers, since the Emerson news. At the time, I came out with the rather informal statement, at the top of this post. To back it up, however, we now have Graham Green's article below. Another good friend, Graham is in a position to directly share the investment roadmap of LabVIEW. PCB Deadlines I've been designing PCBs since 1976, you can say I’ve seen quite a few. So remember: every PCB design is bespoke; it’s never been designed before. They all have differences and difficulties and I argue you can’t tell by looking at a 35 page schematic with any genuine accuracy the timescale needed to design it you could be weeks out. I remember being called to a meeting where it was said to me “You’re taking too long.” I replied, “How long should it take?” He didn’t have an answer. I recall another meeting where I was asked, “How long to design this new PCB design” I said, “I don’t know.” his reply, “Oh come on, use all your experience.” My reply was, “I just did.” Making up a number that you probably won’t meet so it can be entered on a spreadsheet which will be used as reference if you’re late. All I do is state I will work as long and as hard as I can to achieve someone's imagined timescale. PCB designers don’t have a turbo boost switch or a fast speed or slow speed, just a speed. But what you can do is spend more hours to achieve the deadline. By all means, make an estimate, but to be honest, it’s a guesstimate. So I will ask this question: is the electronics engineer ever asked how long will his or her 35-page schematic take?. i don't think they are.

Designing FPCs (flexible printed circuits) is always a bit of a treat for me. When an application calls for them, really nothing else will do. Usually, this is space constraints, hence why they're so common in small portable electronics - I almost guarantee there are a few in your phone. Compared to conventional assembled cables they can be a bit more expensive, particularly at low volumes, but also it's the design effort that drives the cost up. Taking the time to model a complex 3D path, and flatten this out into a 2D shape is a lot longer than it takes to plug in a cable, but there is something tremendously satisfying about taping an FPC into place and mating it into the connector just how you designed it to.

Controlling multiple FAULHABER MC 3603 S from a single Arduino via its Serial1 - having a transceiver in between. It's been my summer project - see my previous post: https://lnkd.in/etmF4RVz Here now the footage of all 4 MCs controlled by the Arduino to MC lib. The sequence is: a) update the drive status b) enable / disable / enable the drive just for the fun of it c) do a homing to the index of the encoder d) move back an forward in speed control e) move to two different positions f) change the profile parameters for the moves of the next turn g) start over Simply to show off the capabilities which directly built-in. This sequence has been running for days during the tests. Have to update the official AppNote during the next weeks, then you can simply download the enhanced version. #FAULHABER, #MotionControl, #Arduino

Lawrence Morrall has been helping a customer with radiated emissions from a brushless DC motor controller. He characterised the radiated emissions, then found the radiating cables through use of an RF current probe. Because the PCB was in later stages of production we had to use ferrite cores around the noisy cables to reduce the noise to acceptable (Class B) levels. This isn't an ideal solution compared to on board filters but it was appropriate and proportionate to the product's needs. We can do this quicker/cheaper than anyone else because we combine consultancy and problem solving with the test laboratory facilities to prove the change. Our cycle time between measurement --> idea --> modification --> measurement is measured in minutes, not days. If you have an EMC problem then give us a call. #emc #ProblemSolving

The shutdown of Coherent's microchip plant in the UK will have significant implications for key defence programmes including the Typhoon. As fielded technologies like radar power amplifiers age, it will be crucial to ensure that failed assemblies are properly diagnosed, standardised repair and rework procedures developed and faults logged to aid circuit card-level support throughout in-service years and into obsolescence. LTB (lifetime buy) can't cater to a programme's long-term sustainment. Usually, fitters interpret it as "unlimited supply available so throw away circuit boards as you wish and focus on inventory availability". Until it isn't and millions would be spent reverse engineering and/or subjecting LRUs/SRUs to approvals which may take years to complete. MoD can't delegate this to the supply chain as it would cost the British taxpayer dearly. In-house training and equipping for repair is paramount.
